Alex K.
Growing up in New Hampshire's White Mountains, I started downhill skiing at age 2 on Bode Miller's home turf, Cannon Mountain, in Franconia Notch. Around age 10, my family and I moved to Lake George, N.Y. There, I followed my parents' lead and got into all types of skiing -- including alpine and cross-country -- and qualified for two NY state championships in XC skiing in high school.
After graduating college in Boston (where I played soccer; no ski team there!) with a journalism degree, I moved to Breckenridge, Colo., where I spent a winter as a ski bum, working as a ski instructor at two local nordic centers and skiing as much as I could, up and down hills, every single day. That winter, I taught myself how to snowboard and dabbled in tele and backcountry skiing, and freelanced as a sportswriter on the side.
I returned back to the Lake George area to become a newspaper sportswriter. A few years later, I took a job as a traveling reporter with FasterSkier.com, which covers international nordic ski racing, and went on to become the managing editor of the website. I reported at numerous World Cups and World Championships in Europe and Canada, and my second Olympics (my first was a college internship in 2008) in 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
Winter sports are a huge part of who I am, the type of recreation I enjoy, and the career I've built. As a mom of two young boys, I'm trying my best to pass on this love of getting outside and playing in the snow with them!
