About this Review: This review is my fiancée's honest opinion of the golf clubs, which she purchased with her own money in August of 2020.

My take

The Callaway Women’s Mavrik Max Combo Set is perfect for women who are just getting into the game of golf. The clubs are not too heavy, which makes them easy to control. Plus, the clubs offer great distance and help elevate the ball, which can be a challenge for women who are beginners.

What I was looking for

I got my fiancée into golf when we first met in March 2020. For a while, she was using my old clubs, but they were steel shafted men’s clubs, which were much too long and heavy for her. My fiancée is athletic and has a great natural swing, so I was looking for a solid set of women’s irons that would fit her swing and her strength.

Why I chose this club

I personally play Callaway clubs, which is why I chose the Callaway Mavrik Max Combo set for my fiancée. Since these were specifically women’s clubs, I knew the length would be right for her (she’s 5’3”) and the graphite shafts would help her manage to swing more easily and with more control. We didn’t really consider any other options. She liked the orange color, and I know that Callaway makes excellent clubs, so it was an easy decision.

What my fiancée loves about it

  • Distance: My fiancée gets great distance out of these clubs. The Mavriks run about a degree strong, which gives a little extra distance with each club. Not only do the clubs play long, but they have a low center of gravity on the face, which helps achieve a higher ball flight, too.
  • Forgiveness: These clubs have a deep cavity back and all around thick feel, which is excellent for forgiveness. Whether my fiancée hits it on the heel or the toe of the club, she still gets almost all of her usual distance and accuracy from her swing.
  • Sound: Even for such thick, forgiving clubs, when my fiancée hits the ball in the sweet spot, the whole group knows it. It sounds like she’s hit a marshmallow.
  • Shaft Feel: The first thing my fiancée noticed about the clubs was the shaft. The UST Helium Shafts are perfect for her. They are nice and light, enabling her to play 18 holes without losing energy on the back 9.
  • Shaft Performance: The shaft is ideal for my fiancée’s swing. She swings the driver around 80mph, and these shafts on the hybrids and irons enable her to maximize her swing speed and get the most distance out of her clubs.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: My fiancée likes the orange trim on the clubs. Plus, we live in Tennessee now, so it fits with where we live, too.
  • Grip Feel: The Lamkin Sonar grips felt great for my fiancée right away, and they have remained tacky and durable over the last two years.
  • Launch Angle: Immediately upon switching to these clubs, my fiancée started enjoying golf so much more because she was able to get the ball in the air. She felt like she was actually playing golf, not just scooting the ball through the fairway with every shot.

Issues she’s encountered

  • Feel: My fiancée has started to improve her touch around the green with her wedges, but these clubs don’t make it any easier. They don’t have the softest feel, so it can be challenging for her to dial in her distances when she’s chipping and pitching.
  • Workability: My fiancée naturally hits a low draw. However, she’s not going to learn how to hit different types of shots with these clubs (like a high fade, or a low hook to get around a tree). These clubs are built for game improvement, not shot shaping and selection.
  • Adjustability: These clubs are not adjustable.
  • Spin: These clubs are built for game improvement, so the metal on the irons and hybrids is hard and durable. This improves distance and forgiveness on mishits, but it makes it much harder to produce spin on the ball.

Best shot with this club

On the 5th hole at Black Creek Club, my fiancée had a 105 yard approach shot to the green, which was over a creek and needed to carry the corner of the bunker. She took a 9-iron and had no problem clearing all of the hazards while landing the ball softly on the green so it stayed on the green and allowed her to two putt for a par!

Value for the money vs. other options

The Callaway Women’s Mavrik Max Combo Set (4H, 5H, 6-PW) currently costs $999.99. A very similar club is the Cobra Women’s Air-X Combo Set (5H, 6H, 7-GW) and costs $799.00. We’ve been out with other women who play the Cobra combo set, and my fiancée tried those clubs out as well and hit them great. Since both the Callaway and Cobra clubs are high quality, it would make more financial sense to go with the Cobra combo set instead for a starter set of clubs.

Final verdict

The Mavrik Max Combo Set is perfect for women who are just getting into golf and want to play with quality clubs that are easy to hit and feel good. My fiancée improved quickly thanks to these easy-to-hit clubs and they will continue to serve her well as she breaks 100 on a regular basis.
