About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the wedge, which i purchased with my own money in August of 2022.

My take

The TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 Black wedge is a great option for players who want to increase spin around the green, particularly in wet conditions. The Grind 3 provides excellent stopping ability, and makes it easy to hit full shots and chips. This wedge would be well-suited for a mid-handicap, and its versatility makes it also a decent fit for a scratch golfer.

What I was looking for

I was changing the gaps in my iron lofts, so I needed new wedges to match those changes. I wanted a set that provided plenty of loft and bounce options, and I really wanted something other than the standard chrome or silver finish. I also did not want to lose any of the spin, control, or feel around the greens that I got from my older Vokey wedges.

Why I chose this club

When I purchased my last set of wedges, I was given the advice not to change brands if I liked the wedges I play. However, I wanted to see if there was a wedge in the market that looked and felt as good as the Titleist Vokey wedges I had been playing for years. The Milled Grind 3 provides several options in terms of lofts and bounce. It also has a really cool looking black finish option with a raw face that will rust over time and provide more grip on the ball.

What I love about it

  • Launch: These wedges provide a very controllable and consistent launch that allows me to adjust the height based on how I need to play the shot.
  • Forgiveness: I was very happy that these wedges actually provided me more forgiveness than my Vokey wedges did on full shots and chips around the green. I can miss it on the toe and not lose much spin or accuracy. I gave this a four-star rating because there are more forgiving wedges available, such as the Cleveland CBX2 wedge.
  • Feel: The feel of these wedges is incredible. I get nice feedback if I mishit, and I know I can control the ball off the face when I make good contact.
  • Spin: I have no problems creating spin with these wedges on full shots, around the green, and out of the bunker.
  • Bounce: The bounce has worked great for me. I see more of my shots around the green gliding through the grass versus digging in like my Vokey wedges did. They provide several bounce options from 10 degrees to 14 degrees.
  • Around the Green: They are very easy to control, which allows me to play different types of shots around the green. I can hit something with more roll or more spin.
  • Full Shots: These wedges are very versatile on full shots. I can hit them high and stop quickly, or I can hit them lower and have them bounce and roll before stopping.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: I love the black finish and appreciate that there aren’t any holes drilled out in the back of the face like in a Callaway wedge. However, these are only offered in satin chrome or satin black, which may not be appealing to some golfers.
  • Innovation: The wedges have raised micro-ribs on the face to provide even more feel and control around the greens. I feel that the biggest benefit from the micro-ribs is in coming out of wet grass. There the ball still grabs the face and allows players to generate backspin.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Bounce: Some golfers may not like that there is only one grind option when compared to, for example, a Vokey SM9 that has four different grind options to fit different playing styles and conditions.

Best shot with this wedge

I play in tournaments on a regular basis, and the ability to get up and down from a bunker is crucial. In my last tournament at Alta Mesa Country Club, I almost holed out my first bunker shot by landing it short and allowing it to release to the hole. A few holes later I had a longer bunker shot and was able to fly it to the pin and stop it.

Value for the money vs. other options

I feel the value is great. I know names like Vokey and Cleveland have dominated the wedge market the past few decades, but this latest model by TaylorMade is incredible. They are in the higher-end price range alongside the Jaws or SM9 wedges, but are absolutely worth the cost for golfers wanting a versatile wedge that provides exceptional feel and control around the greens. They are forgiving while still allowing creativity in the way a golfer plays shots, whether a full swing to a chip or flop shot.

Final verdict

I would encourage anyone looking for new wedges to try the Milled Grind 3 wedge by TaylorMade. It comes in several different loft and bounce options and TaylorMade offers an attractive cool black finish. They are more forgiving than I expected while also providing a great amount of feel and ball control into and around the greens. I particularly like the raw-face concept, as it can provide additional spin in wet conditions and hold up to long-term use.
