How it performs
What I was looking for
I was searching for a forgiving driver that can increase distance but have some playability. I also wanted to try a brand I had never tried before and only heard good things about the ZX driver, so I decided to try it in search of forgiveness and distance.
Why I chose this club
I have tried the TaylorMade Sim 2, the Callaway Rogue ST, and Titleist D2 drivers, which were all great. I was on the search for a driver with a good feel off the tee, and I mostly wanted to try a brand I had not tried before. I was between the Stealth and the ZX. I opted for the ZX due to wanting a new brand and the feel off the tee when I tried it in a simulator.
What I love about it
- Forgiveness: The rebound frame technology really changed the feel. It stores energy and releases it, which makes the face soft for forgiveness.
- Feel: The feel is off the charts at impact. With a soft titanium face, every tee shot feels powerful and controllable.
- Sound: Although a typical titanium driver head, the sound is very crisp at contact, especially when hit on the center of the face, which really improves consistency.
- Adjustability: The adapter allows for adjustability in the degrees of the head and also upright lie.
- Shaft Feel: The Hazardous smoke black is always a very consistent shaft with a low launch angle and low spin to help maximize performance.
- Aesthetic Appeal: The black head is smooth in color and at address, which helps me feel confident.
- Grip Feel: I had the Golf Pride Multicompound new decade Midsize grip installed, which is my favorite grip. The two-toned color helps with consistent grip placement.
- Launch Angle: The low-mid launch angle provided by the rebound frame and the shaft is a great combination for maximizing distance.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Distance: Although the rebound frame technology is made for storing energy and releasing it at impact, I still felt that I lost some distance compared to the Sim Max 2 and Rogue ST.
- Workability: Due to the high forgiveness, this driver shoots a typical ball flight with each shot, which decreases workability since it is very consistent with a single ball flight.
Best shot with this club
I was playing at the East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, D.C., one morning on a trip. It was the 14th hole, and the tee box was very tight. There were overhanging trees on both sides of the tee box, forcing a very straight ball. There was OB on the right as well, so it was not an easy tee shot. I hit a straight ball round with the ZX driver as it was my first round with it. This was shocking because I usually hit a fade. I took a tight line just right off the tree on my left and knew it would be perfect if I hit my straight tee shot as I have. I took a very smooth swing, focusing on my contact, and launched it. I hit it about 275 down the middle of the fairway and left myself about 100 yards into the pin. This was a great shot because I could trust a ball flight out of my driver and execute the shot without doubts.
Value for the money vs. other options
At $499.99 retail when I bought this driver, it was almost as pricey as the Rogue ST ($549.99) and the Stealth ($599.99). All major brands compete for technology at this point, and prices seem to be standard across the board. For the consistency off the tee, I do think this driver is worth it over the other brands. I did notice I lost some distance with the ZX compared to the Rogue, so if distance is a priority, the price difference might be something to look into and invest in. However, if consistency is what one is looking for off the tee, this driver is perfectly priced.
Final verdict
This club truly unlocks great forgiveness in a driver and makes it consistent off the tee.
