How it performs
What I was looking for
My mom has always been a short game wizard, and I wanted her to have the best-fitting wedge for her game. Something that would offer enough forgiveness for her confidence level to be high while allowing a higher loft than her bump and run shots.
Why I chose this club
Roger Cleveland helps every major manufacturer with their wedge designs, which is one of the many reasons I picked this wedge to buy for my mom. I did not even consider any other options. I knew that the wedge design would fit her game perfectly.
What she loves about it
- Forgiveness: Ultra forgiving, just as forgiving as her original cavity back irons. It offers the same sole width within a wedge design.
- Feel: Immaculate feel, especially in comparison to the iron set wedge she had used around the greens previously (2012 Ping Cavity Backs).
- Spin: Face grooves designed to generate more greenside spin is more than she expected and not at all comparable to her irons.
- Around the Green: It’s easy to control the flight and roll out. Well designed to offer consistency and accuracy.
- Full Shots: High Launching and ultra forgiving. The lower Center of Gravity (CoG) and wider sole offer a tighter shot dispersion.
- Aesthetic Appeal: It’s a great-looking wedge design from Roger Cleveland.
- Innovation: Bringing an iron feel to a wedge is something that manufacturers have been trying to accomplish for a long time. The advanced zipcore grooves in a lighter cavity back are huge standouts for this wedge.
Issues she’s encountered
- Launch: Slightly lower launch than anticipated, although it is an upgrade from her cavity back wedge. These are still the best option for a golfer with a shallow swing plane with wedges. The trade-off is well worth sacrificing the higher ball flight for consistency and forgiveness.
Best Shot with this Wedge
The best shot my mom has had with the new Cleveland CBX Zipcore Wedge was a chip-in from 30 yards off the green. She had been struggling to get into a rhythm on the first few holes, took her time with a long par chip, brought it up the hill, and landed it perfectly to allow the ball to roll out and roll in!
Value for the money vs. other options
These wedges are worth the money. They are getting premium materials and design for a great price. Titleist SM9 wedges aren’t as forgiving but are more expensive at $179.99. Callaway’s Mack Daddy CB wedges do not offer the spin control or feel but recently had a nice price drop to $109.99. I would recommend these wedges over any option for ladies.
Final verdict
The Cleveland Women’s CBX Zipcore wedges offer a great amount of spin control and forgiveness around the greens. These should be at the top of every golfer’s wish list. They are getting a traditional cavity back sole designed to offer better shots on mishits, especially thin or thick, and the sole thickness of an iron with the spin control of a wedge.
