Brand Claims

What does Ride claim about this snowboard? [Sydney] Ride claims that this board is for advanced riders that love riding on powder with power and also to rip hard. They state that this board is a carver.

[Victor] Ride definitely claims that this guy is your groomer missile, your pal. They say it is very aggressive, which is anomalous for this board because it's not quite volume-shifted. It's a little bit more of, I would say, a mid-wide. I believe it sits right at about a 250-millimeter width here on this 142, but it is definitely a very sturdy, fast, agile yet grounded and very controllable board.

How does the width of the board impact the riding experience? [Victor] So the width on this board says that even at the smaller size, it's going to give you a little bit more surface area to not only transfer from edge-to-edge but also displace the snow. So the Carbon Array 5 has the stringers kind of all diagonally throughout, not only the front foot but also the back foot, and it has a little bit extra in the tail to make up for the lack of the tail. But don't let that fool you. That tail is still very strong. It's going to definitely hold down whatever kind of stability you need and still also provide you a ton of pop.

Overall Impressions

What is your overall impression of this snowboard? [Sydney] Initially, riding this board, the first thing I thought was that it was a little heavy, and that was hard to say because I wanted to love it so much. But the heaviness of this board really did contribute to the way I rode it. However, that weight did help me lay really deep carves. I felt the carving of this board and my edge hold in deep snow was great–and on ice. It was a little icy today, and it held really great for that as well.

Carving

How is the board for carving? [Sydney] The shape of this board, the tail is really, really sharp, and it has that really aggressive, spooned-out tail. It was really sharp. I was like, “I don't want to cut myself.” But it was really fun because that propelled the end of my carve. I felt I could really feel that tail digging into the mountain, which was really awesome. If you are on the East Coast or riding powder, like ice, this will really carve through on those edges. On the West Coast or anywhere else where you're riding it through the variable terrain, it does okay. But where I really loved this board is when I was carving, especially on groomers. It really laid a deep edge.

[Victor] Carving on this is incredible. The profile on this board is what Ride calls the extra camber, which means it's just a lot of traditional camber. It’s fully bowed towards the snow to keep your edges down and sturdy. I probably took it well over 40 miles an hour.

How is the stability in the turn? [Sydney] My stability in this turn was really great. It's a fairly wide board, so especially if you have a larger boot like I do, you will feel really comfortable on this board and really stable. It's really wide, and it's really solid.

What about dampness? Any chatter in the board? [Sydney] The dampness and underfoot chatter was pretty minimal because of the wide base and the shape. I felt really solid landing, and it absorbed fairly well. I did not experience a lot of chatter in this. I did take it through some pretty variable spring terrain. It cut through pretty okay. But I will say that the heaviness of this board didn't make me feel very confident to take it in really wild variable terrain without having to throw it around everywhere.

[Victor] I had a really rough time finding anything that would really feel unstable underfoot. It just feels very grounded. Like, in race car terms, it had a lot of down force, and it just seemed very planted to the ground. It wanted to stay stable at any terrain.

How is it at speed? [Victor] With the stoneground race base, it is very fast, incredibly fast. It has no problem picking up speed. If you point it, especially on a nice corduroy day, you're going to go from 0 to 60 really quick.

How is the energy and acceleration? [Sydney] The energy, acceleration was good. This board goes really fast and accelerates fantastically. I felt like the energy I put into this board wasn't quite given back because it lacks a little bit of pop, but where it lacks in pop, it makes up for in how fast and aggressive you can go on your groomers and carving.

Freestyle

How playful is it? How is its pop? [Sydney] This board had pop to it. I wouldn't say it's a very playful board. The stiffness is just above medium, but because it was heavy, I didn't feel super playful on this board. You can catch a lot of air on this. And there's a good amount of landing gear built into this board’s design, but it's not your park board. You're not going to really jib around on this. It's more for just pointing it downhill in high-speed chases.

How is it for riding switch? [Sydney] I did try riding switch, and because of how aggressive this nose is and how aggressive the tail is in the shape, I would say it's a little sketchy riding switch. But it's enough to where if you were riding backside, or whatever, you can navigate out of this. You can also land 180s. I wouldn't really ride much switch on this board unless I had to.

How about the landing on jumps? [Sydney] On this board, because it's a little heavier, I didn't feel like I got as airborne. But when I landed, it was solid. This board has a nice base. It really dampened and made for a solid landing.

Freeride

How would it be in powder? [Sydney] I wasn't able to take this board in powder, because it is March, but I think it would be really awesome in powder, especially because that tail will really sink in the snow and propel this front nose on top of the snow.

How is it on uneven terrain and chunder? [Sydney] Through the chunder it did well because it is a heavier board that lays an edge. I thought I was able to cut through it as long as I was going with it. Cutting over those moguls is a bad idea in general, but you kind of had to go with it, it didn't completely cut through everything. So riding it in chunder was regular, not super exceptional, but not a poor board to do that in.

[Victor] I took it through some chundery stuff in hopes of finding something that would make me wash out or just put this board to its limit. This nose just completely kept me upright, and I can only give credit to the nose because my legs were done from all of the riding.

How is its maneuverability riding in the trees? [Sydney] The maneuverability in the trees was really fantastic. I felt like I could control the board edge-to-edge and maneuver my way through the trees the way I wanted to. So this board would be really fun, especially on a powder day, when you have that glade with the tree line that you want to ride. This board would be so fun.

[Victor] I would definitely take this board out for any kind of tree runs and through chundery stuff. It will feel a bit rough, but the board will hold up, and it doesn't buck you around. You feel pretty grounded, surprisingly on such a small board. I mean, again, I rode the 142, and I’m 5’7” and about 160 pounds, and this is a kid-size board for me. It felt very sturdy. It was great and super maneuverable through the trees.

What terrain is this board ideal for? [Sydney] This board would be great in resort riding, trees, powder, and groomers. It definitely takes a wider radius turn, so you want to make sure you're looking around you before you take somebody out on this board.

What terrain should riders avoid with this one? [Sydney] I would not take this board into the park.

Is there any location you might pack this board for around the world? [Sydney] If I was going to Depauw, Indiana to get some good snow there, or Canada, which is infamous for lots of snowfall and really deep steep lines, I would take this. This is definitely a deep and steep board that's just really solid for those locations.

Recommendations

Who would you recommend this board to? [Sydney] If you are a really aggressive rider who likes to lay carves or is a larger person like me, you would enjoy this board because it does feel stable, and it does lay on edge. So overall, if you're an advanced to expert rider this would be a really fun board to add to your quiver.

Who would you not recommend this board to? [Sydney] If you're a park rider, you will not like this. If you are an intermediate rider that is more beginner than intermediate, you also might not like this because of the stiffness and just how aggressive the shape of this board is.

It wasn't very springy or poppy, so if you like to hit the side hits and really be playful on the mountain, I would not recommend this board for you. This definitely is for somebody who favors carving and even backcountry terrain because of this profile.

Could you speak about considerations regarding adding this board to a quiver? [Sydney] This board is for someone who’s looking to add a stiffer, more aggressive board to their quiver for really aggressive carves, powder, backcountry terrain, and all-mountain. This is a really great option to add to a quiver because it has a unique shape. It's a fun board to ride. It's a simple graphic, but very clean. This is definitely a board I would add to my quiver. But this might not necessarily be my one-board quiver that's my go-to.
