About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the snowboard pants, which I purchased with my own money in October of 2022.

The Roxy Women’s Backyard Pants are a great choice for any style of snowboarding and can be used for all skill levels.

Roxy Women's Backyard Pants

About the pants I own

  • Weight: 165 lbs
  • Pant size: XL
  • Experience: 12 years of snowboarding

  • Days used: 6
  • Where I’ve used them: Caberfae Peaks, Michigan, and Beech Mountain, North Carolina
  • Weather conditions used in: I have worn these pants for perfect sunny days, a whiteout blizzard that lasted two hours, and days with the snowmaking machines blowing snow, resulting in wet conditions during the day and ice for night riding

What I was looking for

I was seeking new snowboard pants because my old pair were too tight and I needed something that would allow me to move easier when riding my snowboard. I wanted to find pants that had ease of movement, along with a good waterproof rating and insulation for warmth. Due to my hips being wider than normal, I was looking for pants that would fit comfortably in that area while not being too tight when sitting.

Why I chose this gear

I bought this product because I have always liked the way Roxy snow gear looked on other riders. I have always heard from various users that they loved the gear and they would also talk about how well they fit their figures, so I wanted to give it a try. I did not consider buying any other brands; I was set on purchasing Roxy when I began my search for new snow gear.

What I love about them

  • Fit: I was set on finding a fit that allowed comfortable movements while snowboarding without being too baggy and loose. The Roxy Women’s Backyard Pants fit my body perfectly in all areas, including the tightest parts (hips, thighs). These pants don’t sag at all.
  • Comfort: The comfort of these pants are amazing, and better than any snowboard pant I have owned in the past. While boarding, these pants move with my body and don’t give any restrictions to movement. They are soft and flexible, even during the first use. I can wear these all day on the mountain and never feel the need to take them off. I wear a midweight baselayer under them, and it isn’t bulky while still providing warmth.
  • Warmth: The materials are amazing for insulation, and my legs never get cold when wearing these pants. The coldest temperature I have worn these pants in is 20 degrees, and I was riding for nine hours and never got chilled the whole day I was out. I was wearing a thin pair of leggings under these pants and that was plenty of layers to stay warm.
  • Waterproofing: I am amazed at the waterproofing of these pants. The snow-making machines were blowing for two days during my most recent trip, and it was the perfect test for waterproofing ability. I expected my pants to be soaked, but they kept me perfectly dry. I had my phone in my pants pocket and it also stayed dry until the end of the day.
  • Breathability: The vents on the inner thighs provide amazing breathability. I like to stay cool while I am riding, and I do not get too hot in these pants at all.
  • Durability Based on the quality of the materials, I expect these pants to have a very long product life.
  • Weight: They are very light, and not bulky at all. The weight of these pants allows for layers to fit underneath without adding extra bulk, and it doesn’t weigh me down when I am walking or riding. The lightweight material of these pants make them almost feel non-existent while wearing.
  • Ease of movement: I have no problems moving in these pants. I have gone through the park, over side jumps, and done casual riding down groomers and have not had any issues performing any movement I’ve needed to. I can turn in any direction at any speed and there are no restrictions.
  • Quality: The quality is unmatched to anything I have worn before. The feel of the material is very durable, and the zippers and buttons are very sturdy. This product was made very well, and while wearing them, the pants feel really solid. I have skidded across the ice with these and they never ripped nor do they show signs of wear from various conditions.
  • Special Features: The pockets in these pants have zippers to close, and they are so deep it doesn’t affect the fit of the pants when items are in them. I use the pockets to hold my key fob, credit cards, and I.D., and I forget they are in there because the pockets hold them so comfortably. The vents on the inner thighs give max breathability and I do not ride with them closed because I love the air flow.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Other: There are two buttons and a hook to close the pants, and the hook can sometimes be difficult to undo when using the bathroom or taking off the pants. It doesn’t really present an issue, however, it takes a few extra seconds to undo if in a hurry.

Favorite moment with this gear

I took a pretty good spill in icy conditions, and as I was going down, I had the thought “I really hope these pants save my knees on this one,” because I have had snow pants completely rip sliding on the ice, skinning my knee pretty badly. I was more nervous about that happening again instead of making myself look like a fool in front of the whole resort. When I got up, the material on the pants was completely unscathed and it was the moment I realized how thankful I was for purchasing such a great product.

Value for the money vs. other options

Compared to The North Face Women’s Aboutaday Pant, the Roxy Women’s Backyard Pants provide a lower insulation weight with 40g than The North Face with 60g. With the insulation difference, the Roxy Women’s Backyard Pants still provide superb warmth without the added bulk. Additionally, the Roxy pants have a jacket to pant attachment system to keep snow out from where it doesn’t belong, while these North Face pants do not. The waterproofing rating on these pants are the same. I purchased Roxy Backyard pants for slightly less than The North Face. I do not feel like the lower price I paid sacrificed any quality for a new pair of snow pants, and I would buy these pants again over other options on the internet.

Final verdict

The Roxy Women’s Backyard Pants have provided the necessary comfort, warmth, and protection for a solid day on the mountain. I would recommend these pants to any woman with any skill level who needs solid pants for all snow conditions.
