My take

Overall, the Cobra Offset AIR-X Driver is solid and incredibly lightweight. It offers great distance while maintaining its consistency. I believe the mid to high handicapper would enjoy this club as well as seniors who don’t have the swing speed they once did.

How it performs

What I was looking for

I was looking for a driver that would benefit my dad most, as he is retiring next year and is going to be playing more golf. I wanted to see if this driver was as lightweight as the experts say it is and how it would work for his game.

Why I chose to test this club

I decided to test this club because I have heard a lot of positive feedback toward its performance and that it is one of the most lightweight drivers on the market right now at 277g. I think it is definitely a good option for the senior player who can't get through the ball like they used to and wants to get their distance back up off the tee.

What I love about it

• Distance: The distance is right on with what I expected for it being a lighter driver. I find my distance to be within five yards of what I currently hit off the tee (270 average).
• Forgiveness: The forgiveness is a plus to this driver. Each swing, whether it is hit square, on the toe, or heel, traveled within 15 yards left or right of my target.
• Sound: The sound of this driver is pretty normal. It offers nothing flashy, which is what I prefer.
• Workability: The 10.5 degrees of loft allows for a high draw or fade to be hit depending on what one’s shot shape is. This is due to the ability to get the ball up in the air quickly.
• Shaft Feel: The shaft feel is a positive for someone with a slower swing speed. The shaft itself is 40g, which creates a higher swing speed.

Issues I’ve encountered

• Feel: The feel is hard for me, personally, as it is too light. I find myself getting ahead on my swings and pulling them a few yards to the right because of that.
• Adjustability: There are no adjustable features, which is a negative in today's realm of drivers. Being able to shift the driver to either a draw or fade setting is a useful luxury to have.
• Shaft Performance: The 40g shaft is lighter than I normally play with (65g). I believe it is too light and creates some inconsistency within my swings, but would be a nice option for someone with a slower swing speed.
• Aesthetic Appeal: Very basic and boring design with no colors popping out. And I’m not a big fan of the offset head.
• Grip Feel: The standard lamkin grip is slicker than I would have liked. So if I were to purchase this putter, I would customize the grip to make it tackier.
• Launch Angle: The launch angle is higher than I would have liked. I play with a 9.5, the AIR-X I tested was a 10.5. My carry distance with this club is around 250 average, which is lower than what I would like.
• Spin: With the higher ball flight, there is more spin created, which created less roll out on my drivers over the course of my testing session.

Best shot with this club

My best shot was when I hit a cut shot right down the middle of the fairway and then followed it up with a high draw right down the same spot. I believe the workability features and ability to get the ball in the air quickly helped me accomplish these shots.

Value for the money vs. other options

I believe there are other good options out there like the Wilson D9 or Taylormade M4, but the AIR-X is the better value for its performance–especially for seniors. Its workability, distance, and weight outperform the other two options.

Final verdict

I think the Cobra Offset AIR-X driver is a good option for its value. It is best suited for seniors who need a driver that offers up the capacity for higher swing speeds—thus creating more distance.
