My take

How it performs
What I was looking for
I currently play with a Callaway XR16 and was looking for a driver with a lower launch angle. I tend to have a higher ball flight and want something that has a lower launch angle for more opportunity for roll outs.
Why I chose to test this club
I decided to test this club because I have heard a lot of positive feedback toward its performance. I heard it was forgiving and had a mid launch, which would create less spin, thus creating more distance. This is primarily what I was looking for off the tee.
What I love about it
- Distance: The distance on this driver is consistent, averaging around 270–280 yards, which is what I currently average with my Callaway XR16. All things considered, I was pleased with this because I am not looking to gain 10-20 yards, but find more consistency and fairways.
- Sound: The sound on contact of the driver is pretty typical. It offers nothing flashy, which is what I prefer. It has a normal pinging sound that isn’t too loud where it's annoying, nor is it a dull thud that sounds monotonous.
- Grip Feel: The grip on this driver is a standard Lamkin Crossline. It has a nice feel to it because it is tacky. I normally customize my grips to a standard golf pride, but this club doesn’t need a new grip.
- Spin: The spin is lower than my current driver and creates more roll out. This consistently creates more distance and allows me to get closer approach shots into greens—which is a highlight for everyone looking to lower their scores.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Forgiveness: The forgiveness isn’t what I had hoped, as it is inconsistent with its distance if stuck anywhere but dead center on the face.
- Feel: The face is large and should help more than one thinks with the feel, but it ended up being disappointing. There isn’t much softness within the face to help determine the mishits.
- Workability: With the 10.5° loft, I am not able to work the ball as much as I would like. The ball flight is much higher than what I am used to.
- Adjustability: This driver offers zero adjustability, which is a downfall in today's world of drivers. Being able to adjust the shaft and head is essential in creating the ball flight one wants to hit.
- Shaft Performance: The 55g shaft is lighter than I normally play with (65g). I believe it is too light and creates some inconsistency within my swings. I would like to test it again with a 65g shaft.
- Aesthetic Appeal: The aesthetics are pretty boring. The design is all-black and features nothing that pops off the club.
- Launch Angle: The launch angle is higher than I like. I play with a 9.5, and tested the 10.5, so my ball flight was going higher than I would have preferred. But I could see the potential if the loft angle was lower.
Best shot with this club
My best shot was on my fourth swing. I was able to carry the ball 257 yards and it rolled out to 282 yards right down the middle of the fairway on the simulator.
Value for the money vs. other options
I believe there are other good options out there like the Callaway Mavrik or the TaylorMade M4, as they fall in similar price points. I believe those other two outperform the Wilson D9 because of their face feel, workability, and overall consistency.
Final verdict
I think the Wilson D9 driver is a great option for its value. I believe the mid to high handicapper would definitely benefit from adding this driver into their bag. It creates good distance and is lightweight.
