About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the golf club, which I received from Curated at a product clinic to test in July of 2022.

My take

I’ve had a great experience with the Byrdie Golf Pilot Play Wedge Collection. The milled faces are super spinny, and the overall design is very user-friendly. The set is a great value, but the lack of bounce/grind options is limiting. For those reasons, I recommend this set to beginner and intermediate golfers.

What I was looking for

I was interested in this set because it’s at a very affordable price point from a brand I’ve never tested before. I was looking for performance, user-friendliness, and spin.

Why I chose this club

I received the Byrdie Golf Pilot Play Wedge Collection from a Curated brand clinic to test and review. I was expecting a set similar to others at this price point (Kirkland Signature, Stix, etc.).

What I love about it

  • Launch: It has a very consistent mid-high launch from its milled construction/weighting.
  • Forgiveness: I feel very comfortable with this set. They are very forgiving on full shots but have a bit too much bounce for me around the green.
  • Spin: Spin is exceptional with these wedges. I literally rip pieces of the cover off when I use very soft golf balls. I can rip the ball backward on full shots and quickly stop it on chips.
  • Around the Green: This set gives me some options around the green. The 52° has less loft for those tighter lies, and the 56° and 60° have enough bounce to interact well with turf in softer conditions.
  • Full Shots: I feel very comfortable getting high-mid launch with a ton of backspin from the fully milled grooves/face.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Feel: The feel is a bit lacking, given these are mass-produced at a lower price point, although no more than other wedge sets in this category
  • Bounce: They have a bit too much bounce for my style of play. I tend to open the clubface up around the green, and these wedges presented too much bounce to do that effectively.
  • Shaft Feel: Uniflex shafts are no-frills. These shafts will fit a wide variety of players but are not a premium option and have no custom variations available.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Very nice black finish that wears on the face less than other brands. However, there was general wear on the black finish, which is always to be expected.
  • Grip Feel: Stock grips are almost midsize. My 60° grip came a bit misaligned, a minor issue that doesn’t affect performance but is something I wanted to mention.

Best shot with this wedge

I’ve never been able to rip a ball backward with a wedge on a full approach shot. On the second hole at Brookledge Golf Club, I had 110 yards left in, hit a full 52°, and spun it backward maybe 20 feet, which had previously felt impossible. I have moderate swing speed (100mph driver swing on a good day), so it’s a testament to the grab of these grooves that an average player can do that.

Value for the money vs. other options

I strongly recommend the Byrdie Pilot Play wedge set to anyone in the market for a full set of wedges for a beginner/intermediate player. It is a one-stop shop. This set is #1 for spin and control compared to Kirkland Signature or Stix wedge sets.

Final verdict

The Byrdie Golf Pilot Play Wedge Collection gave me more control of my spin and launch than I’ve ever had. I stopped the ball very quickly on the green and saved a ton of strokes.
