What I was looking for

I wanted to test a variety of wedges to see what the best wedge was for its price point. I tested the Cleveland RTX and CBX and the Titleist SM8 wedges.

Why I did not choose this club

I didn’t buy this wedge. As for my game, I wanted to stay with something that was a little higher performing and didn’t feel like it outperformed my Titleist SM7s, but I believe it has a lot to offer someone not wanting to break the bank. It creates spin around the green and can clip the ball cleanly on all types of lies consistently.

What I love about it

  • Forgiveness: The toe-weighted design allows for higher-struck shots on the face to still stay under control off contact. This creates a wider surface area for shots to be hit, stay on line, and find their target.
  • Feel: A high-grade TPU dampens vibrations when hitting short- and full-swing shots. This creates a feel within the face and in the hands. I like how when I “thin” a shot, it doesn't vibrate through my entire hands and arms.
  • Spin: The grooves are the maximum depth, which makes for maximum spin on full-length wedge shots. I was averaging around 9,700 RPM. This allows more aggressive shots because the ball will two-bounce and check on command.
  • Bounce: This club slides smoothly through the turf, reducing digging and allowing more solid contact on all types of lies.
  • Full Shots: This wedge is solid on approaches from 95–110 yards. The ball checks and spins backward, creating more ability to attack pins. And the design creates opportunities for off-centered shots to still find the green.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Launch: The toe-weighted design allows higher-struck shots on the face to stay under control but sacrifices distance by 5-8 yards consistently.
  • Around the Green: Spin is not optimal around the greens compared to higher-end wedges. The ball will spin but doesn't quickly check.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The club is very basic and has too much writing on the backside of the head to be “sharp” looking.
  • Grip Feel: The grips are slippery and not great; I would customize the grip if I were to invest in buying this club.
  • Innovation: It has a larger face and bounce, but nothing new or innovative with the club compared to other wedges like the SM8 or CTX designs. I wish the bounce were less, as I believe the mid to low-handicap golfer sees the bounce as a turn-off.

Best Shot with this Wedge

I had five chips in a row roll to five feet or less when around the green. This showed me the consistency the wedge can offer because of its soft face due to the TPU-dampening design that allows one to feel the ball come off the face and judge the correct distance time and time again.

Value for the money vs. other options

Suppose someone is looking for a budget-friendly option that offers spin on full shots and decent control around the green. In that case, this is a solid option, especially when compared to spending more money on wedges like the Mizuno T22 or the SM8/9s from Titleist. Overall, the T22 and the SM series offer more consistency and control around the greens but are almost double the cost.

Final verdict

The Tour Edge Hot Launch Super Spin VibRCor is an ideal wedge for the average golfer who doesn’t want to break the bank or have a great deal of flash or expectation around the greens. Overall, it's a solid, basic-level wedge.
