What I was looking for

I typically prefer mallet-style putters, but I have tested almost all of the Scotty Cameron Special Select putters and wanted to give it a try. This putter was heavier than I expected but had the feel and consistency that all the other special select putters had, which made it appealing.

Why I chose to test this club

I hadn’t heard about this putter in particular but knew of the other Special Select putters in the series. I went in open-minded as I know the other putters have a tremendous feel, and this putter is no different with its top-of-the-line appearance down to its performance. The soft feel in the face and balance allow the ball to roll pure off the face with consistency. Putting is all about feel, and this putter checks all the boxes. At this time, I am not going to purchase it as I want to keep other options open; however, this is one of the better putters I have tested within the past six months.

What I love about it

  • Face Feel: The mid-milled face really allows me to feel the club striking the ball. It helps with distance control and makes it feel effortless to get the ball rolling regardless of whether I am within five or 20 feet.
  • Forgiveness: It’s very forgiving. Even when the putt isn’t stuck perfectly, it still rolls pure and stays on line.
  • Weight: The putter is heavy, but it has adjustable features to help decrease the weight. The weight is due to the 6601 aluminum sole that increases the MOI (Moment of Inertia).
  • Alignment: It has a sharp alignment with the all-silver head. The single black line ensures proper setup and alignment on each putt, increasing confidence and adding a swagger by knowing that each putt will go in the hole.
  • Length: I tested a standard 35in putter, which I prefer since I am 5’10’’. It allows me to hang my arms straight and swing back and through in a straight line with no issues.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Pulling this out of the bag is a nice feeling. The steel shaft down to the all-silver mallet head really makes the putter stand out.
  • Grip Feel: The grip feel is solid. It has a standard Scotty Cameron grip which is curved to fit the hands regardless of grip preference.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Customization: I would have liked to see how a 33in or 34in putter performed and how that would have changed the putter's overall weight because it could be too heavy for some users.

Best Putt or Round with this Putter

I demoed this putter twice to get a feel for how it would perform. Consistency was the name of the game. I made 10 five-footers in a row and eight out of 10 10-footers. I will take those numbers all day for a guy who doesn’t play as much as he used to.

Value for the money vs. other options

If one is looking for a higher-end mallet putter, I recommend the Squareback 2. However, other cheaper options will perform well (Odyssey Ten Triple Track and TaylorMade Spider EX #3). Still, one cannot deny the quality and consistency of this putter, and it would be a great option for the low handicapper to take their game to an even higher level.

Final verdict

Overall, this putter unlocks the potential to make more long putts and consistently knock down those 10-foot pressure putts without breaking a sweat.
