About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the putter, which I purchased with my own money in August of 2021.

My take

The Spider X Navy #3 Putter is great for any player who has a very straight, back-and-straight-through putting stroke. It is most effective for golfers with little to no arc in their putting stroke and can be used by players of all skill levels.

What I was looking for

I have always used a blade-style putter, but I wanted to try a mallet. I was looking for a mallet that would help me with my alignment. I felt that the larger head size would help me square the club to the target on short putts better than I can with my blade style putter. I wanted to see if a mallet would help make my stroke more repeatable, and therefore help me to make more putts.

Why I chose this club

I chose to buy the Spider X from Taylormade for two reasons. I have never been a fan of mallet-style putters due to the larger head size, as a result I have alway used a blade. Additionally, I always had a more arching putting stroke, which fits a blade putter much better. However, I believe the Spider X is the best-looking mallet putter in all of golf. Additionally, I noticed how many tour professionals were having success with this putter, so I wanted to try it out for myself.

Sole of Putter

What I love about it

  • Face Feel: The insert feels extremely soft and could be the best I have ever felt off the face of a putter. The ball rolls so smooth and pure and stays true to the line. Additionally, the feel of the putter is so soft and responsive to my putting stroke, giving me more confidence in my stroke.
  • Forgiveness: The rear weighting on both ends of this putter makes it extremely forgiving and mishits still go the same length and travel in a similar line.
  • Alignment: I do not believe there is a putter with better alignment than the Spider X. I have a single line down the middle to align the face as well as the center channel that can be used as an alignment aid as well.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The all-blue head mixed with the black shaft makes this the best-looking mallet putter in golf.
  • Customization: The custom options Taylormade provides are amazing and really allows the consumer to design the putter exactly how they want. One can choose the color for the head and weights, as well as the alignment aid and the shaft and grip as well.
  • Other: This putter makes me enjoy putting more than I ever have previously. I am excited for once to go and practice my putting because I developed a sense of confidence on short putts that I hadn’t had before.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Weight: I personally love a heavier feel to a putter; this putter comes close, but I wish it was a little bit heavier. I prefer the heavier putter because I feel there is not as much work from my hands and arms to hit longer putts or when putting on slow greens. I would have liked this putter to have the heavier weights in it to help with speed control on longer-range putts.
  • Length: I like a shorter putter, so I would have preferred a 34-inch length to the 35. The shorter putter makes me feel more connected to the putter and as it is just an extension of my body, allowing me to rock my shoulders rather than using a lot of hand and wrist movement.
  • Grip Feel: I like a smaller grip on my putters because it allows me to feel more connected to the putter and control the face better. Therefore, I decided to replace the Super Stroke with a Ping pistol grip.

Top Line

Best Putt or Round with this Putter

My personal best round with this putter was a 70. I was able to make pretty much anything inside 10 feet. I feel extremely comfortable with all putts inside 20 feet with this putter. I also made a 50-foot putt for eagle in a different round using this putter and the amazing alignment.

Value for the money vs. other options

I do not think there are many putters to compare this to; it was really a pioneer in its category. However, I would compare it to other mallet putters such as a Scotty Cameron Phantom X, which is more expensive than the Spider, and I think that club does not look nearly as good. Another comparison would be the Odyssey 2 Ball putter, which is in a similar price range. However, I still prefer the feel and look of the Spider X.

Final verdict

The Taylormade Spider X Navy putter is perfect for anyone looking to pick up a quality putter for a great price. This putter will help any player who struggles with alignment and making close putts. Overall, I strongly recommend this putter.
