How it performs
What I was looking for
I was on the hunt for something that performs like a ProV1 but does not scuff so easily. Unfortunately, they are expensive, and I go through ProV1s so fast.
Why I chose this golf ball
I have been looking for a consistent golf ball since Nike stopped producing one. I have read for years how one needs to pick a ball and stick to it. So once I transitioned to a TaylorMade driver, I also went with the ball. I considered all the major brands, such as Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis, Bridgestone RX, and Srixon. I loved the way this one interacted with wedges.
What I love about them
- Distance: The TaylorMade TP5 golf ball has a very good distance. It is a bit firmer than the ProV1, but I feel it jump off the face, especially the driver. I only give this 4 stars because the X version is longer.
- Green Spin: The TaylorMade TP5 ball spins really well. It feels like I can spin it from a lot of different places thanks to the soft cast urethane cover, even more so than the ProV1. I especially love how I can stop the ball on short-sided shots. In several shots where the ball should have been passed the hole, I could land soft and spin to get it in there close.
- Durability: The TaylorMade TP5 seems very durable. Where I scratched or dimpled the ProV1, the TP5 seems untarnished, especially with wedges and out of the bunker. There were several rounds where I used the same ball for all 18 holes.
- Color: I play white though they come in yellow, and the Pix as well. I love the classic look, and the TaylorMade writing is attractive and subtle. The Pix in azalea and popsicles are awesome. And I love the matte finish.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Feel: Unfortunately, the TaylorMade TP5 does not have the best feel off the putter. Sometimes it feels a bit hard. It does no’t feel like the putter is absorbing the ball but knocking it into something hard. The ProV1 and Chrome Soft feel a bit better.
Best shot with this golf ball
I needed to hit a cut around a tree on a par 4 with a 5 iron. I needed to hit it high and carry some greenside trouble. I could spin the TaylorMade TP5 how I needed to execute and keep it on the green.
Value for the money vs. other options
Most of these premium golf balls ring at around the same price. One can often get the TaylorMade TP5 for a lower price than the ProV1; however, like with Titleist, the TP5 rarely goes on sale. Callaway and Srixon are more willing to give one a deal making it easier to pick up multiple boxes. Still, having said that, the TP5 is worth the price, especially based on how long they last (slicing excluded). I am willing to pay the price of the ProV1 for these without a doubt.
Final verdict
While Titleist corners the market, the TP5 should be considered, especially from a greenside spin and durability standpoint. It’s a ball that is tough enough to last while offering the spin needed for all types of greenside shots.
