My take

The Mizuno JPX923 Tour Irons are perfect for low-handicap players or strong ball strikers. These irons provide the perfect blend of forgiveness and distance without sacrificing consistency and workability.

How it performs

What I was looking for

I was looking for a set of players' irons that provide the workability and consistency that a blade-style iron has without losing forgiveness. I also wanted to have a set of irons with a smaller clubhead without losing too much distance and found that these were the perfect club.

Why I chose this club

I chose to buy this club set for multiple reasons. The first and most important reason is the performance of these irons. They did everything I was looking for, providing workability and consistent distances without losing too much forgiveness and distance. The one other option that could compete with these irons was the TaylorMade P7MC, but I ultimately liked the look and performance of the JPX923 more.

What I love about it

• Distance: These irons do not have nearly as much pop and distance as a game improvement iron. However, they still pack a mean punch. I ended up only losing about five yards per club compared to my previous larger clubhead game improvement iron. I also love the consistency of distance with these irons. Many game improvements and even some players' irons go really far when hit well but not nearly as far on mishits. These irons are extremely consistent distances on well-struck and poor strikes.
• Forgiveness: Similar to the distance, the JPX 923s will not help players be more forgiving than a game improvement. However, these irons have a lot of forgiveness for a player's iron, allowing me to feel very confident over the ball. I have hit multiple shots from the toe and heel that hold their target line, and it helps me hit more greens without actually hitting the ball better.
• Feel: The saying “nothing feels like a Mizuno” holds true with these irons. There was no better feeling club when I was testing all the options on the market. These irons have a soft, strong feeling when hitting the ball. I feel like all of my strikes are extremely strong, even on mishits, while still having that soft, smooth feel.
• Sound: These irons sound amazing. Due to the all-forged clubhead, the 923 Tours are a one-piece construction iron with great solid sound. Additionally, there have been multiple shots that I have hit with these irons in which I feel like a professional golfer with how good they sound.
• Workability: While most irons that provide distance and forgiveness lack workability, these Mizuno JPX 923 irons are an exception. I have had no difficulty shaping the golf ball any way I choose. I have been able to hit fades and draws as well as manipulate launch angles to control ball flight to hit high, medium, and low shots.
• Shaft Feel: The Project X 6.5 shafts combined with these 923 tour heads offer the best feel I have ever felt in an iron. The 6.5 has a very stiff tip section which offers a very strong and powerful feel as I move through the golf ball. Additionally, the 6.0 and 5.5 Project X shafts still provide this great feeling.
• Shaft Performance: This is the best iron shaft I have ever used in my golfing career. Compared to the Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, these Project X 6.5s have a stiffer, heavier feel and provide me with optimal spin numbers to maximize distance and control.
• Aesthetic Appeal: I personally think these are the best-looking irons on the market in the players’ iron category. They have a great shape to be the perfect blend of a small clubhead while still providing confidence over the golf ball.
• Grip Feel: I have the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord grip on these irons and love them. The cord feature is small cotton fibers weaving through the grip to repel moisture to provide the maximal grip possible at all times. This grip also has a firm feel, which I personally love, but some players may prefer the MCC grip instead due to the softer feel.
• Launch Angle: These irons provide me with the best launch angles out of any other players iron that I tested. I can manipulate the launch angle to help me hit low, medium, and high golf shots.
• Spin: These irons provide me with the best spin numbers per club to optimize distance without sacrificing control into greens. I feel extremely confident that I can aim at tight pins and know the ball will spin enough to hold the green and even spin back on softer greens.

Issues I’ve encountered

• Adjustability: Unfortunately, there are no adjustability options once these irons are purchased. The only adjustability would be bringing the irons to a local golf shop with a loft and lie machine to adjust those metrics, which would cost anywhere from $2-$5 per club. One could also re-grip their irons, but there is no screw adjustability as seen in fairway woods and drivers.

Best shot with this club

Since these irons only came out early this month, I have not been able to hit as many shots as I would have liked to talk about my “best shot.” Hopefully, a Hole-in-One is in these irons down the line. However, the greatest shot I have hit with these irons was on a 173 yard par 3. The pin was a front right pin guarded by a bunker short and right. The pin was only five yards onto the green, making it a difficult pin to access. Although, I still chose to go after the pin by aiming five yards left and trying to cut the ball towards the pin trusting the workability of these irons. I ended up starting the ball right on my intended line and hitting a 3-yard cut that landed just past the pin about 6 feet to the left and spun right, and stopped 7 feet above the pin. Thankfully, I was able to make that putt to make birdie.

Value for the money vs. other options

The Mizuno JPX923 Tour Irons are roughly $1,300 in a full set 4-PW. Similar irons are the Titleist T100 and T100s, and Srixon ZX7 irons. The T100 irons are also roughly $1,300, and the ZX7s are approximately $1,200. Additionally, the TaylorMade P770 irons are a comparative iron that also costs about $1,300. Therefore, all of the top-performing players' irons have similar costs, so the value comes down to performance and looks. For me, the Mizuno JPX923 tour irons were the top performing of the group going at least three yards further than the rest while also having a tighter dispersion. Additionally, the JPX923 tour irons are, in my opinion, the best-looking iron of the group as well. As a result, I would recommend the Mizuno JPX923 tour irons for the best valued players’ iron.

Final verdict

The Mizuno JPX923 tour irons are perfect for players who are talented ball strikers looking to increase their accuracy without sacrificing distance. Players of all skill levels can benefit from these irons due to the consistent distances on both good and bad golf shots. Additionally, the workability of these irons allows players to create any golf shots they may need.
