How it performs
What I was looking for
I was looking to replace my Callaway Epic Speed 3+ Wood with a more adjustable and workable option. I wanted to find a 3 wood that I could launch high and low from the tee and the fairway. The Stealth Plus+ 2 allowed the fitter to move the MOI forward and increase the loft to help get the ball up in the air while maintaining the low spin aspect.
Why I chose this club
Performance and overall look were key for my purchase. Testing allowed me to dial in the perfect shaft and weighting location for the CG. This fairway also allowed me to open up the face more to reduce the offset and left miss. I tested both the TaylorMade Stealth 2 and the Titleist TSR3 fairway woods. The Stealth Plus+ Plus’ weight and footprint were right in line with what I was looking for in my new fairway wood. The Stealth 2 was a great option as well, but it lacked the adjustability of the Plus model when testing.
What I love about it
- Distance: This is one of the longest fairways I have tested, even when I weakened the loft. I was looking to achieve a 265-yard carry with a stock shot off of the tee and close off of the deck as well. I am able to not only achieve this yardage but also control the flight and not lose too much in terms of total yardage.
- Forgiveness: This fairway wood is slightly less forgiving and made for the better player from the players’ profile. The smaller footprint makes the 3 wood look a bit more intimidating off the deck. Compared to the Stealth 2 Fairway, this head is much more compact from face to back, while the face is slightly deeper on the Stealth 2 Plus.
- Feel: There is a soft off of the face with instant feedback after the swing. I can feel exactly where I hit the ball while it was still in the air. The Twist Face does not detract from the feel of the shots, which had a trampoline-like feel off of flushed shots.
- Sound: It has a somewhat-classic TaylorMade muted-carbon sound on flushed shots.
- Workability: The workability is top tier; I can hit a fade and draw easily without worrying about over-working the ball.
- Adjustability: This club features tons of adjustability with weighting and the loft sleeve. I am able to move the loft sleeve a few notches upright to help align it with my swing and stance. I also find that the moveable weight forward is too hot and low-spin for my liking. I play the weight towards the rear of the club to increase the launch angle and spin. The average player will see less forgiveness with the weight forward, but if controlled, it can be a bomber off the tee or deck.
- Shaft Feel: There is stiffness throughout the shaft with some flex towards the handle.
- Shaft Performance: The shaft features a low launch and spin as advertised, but it’s not overly stout, so I’m still able to feel the kick point
- Aesthetic Appeal: For me, this club has a 10/10 appeal from top to bottom. The modern graphics look amazing.
- Launch Angle: I achieve a 15-degree launch angle on average, which is ideal for this club. The launch angle for this club falls right into my target range; I can get the ball up in the air pretty easily when I have the weight in the back position. I do not want to launch the ball too low and have it roll out a ton since the roll is not something I feel that I can control. A higher launch helps the ball hit and roll out less, which helps me attack the long par 5s with this 3 wood.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Spin: Before finding the right shaft, I struggled to dial in the spin. The stock shaft in the Kai’li Red is a higher-launching and -spinning model, which does not suit my swing whatsoever. I saw the ball balloon on me early on in testing and had little to no roll out when needed on lower-launching shots. The combination of the Tensei White shaft and CG weight moved back helped me get to a 3100–3300 rpm spin, which was perfect. Achieving that spin range meant that the ball carried at its max distance and had a few yards of roll out.
- Grip Feel: The stock grip is firmer with a ton of grip, and it becomes softer over time. Though I’m switching the grip out for the Golfpride Tour Velvet Cord. I do not like the stock grip, as it is made of a firmer rubber that feels very abrasive compared to my normal grip.
Best shot with this club
Once I was through my first 10 shots, I was able to dial in the shaft and weighting location. I hit a flushed 3 wood with a mid-height draw right back to the center line. I wish I could’ve replicated the perfect draw every time, but I was able to replicate the ideal flight every shot.
Value for the money vs. other options
I was able to test against the Stealth 2 as well as the Titleist TSR3. With the Titleist option, I was unable to test in the same build, but I had a similar stock shaft that performed well. I chose the Tensei White shaft to test, as I have previously used this model. This is on the higher end for most fairway woods but worth the money for those in the market for adjustability and distance.
Final verdict
One of the best fairway woods I have been able to test in recent years, this club offered everything I needed in a stock-head offering. Adjustability, shaft options, and an amazing feel, this club was a shrunk version of the Stealth 2 Plus driver.
