What I was looking for

I was looking for a higher-end performing ball that I could use with my simulator all winter. The TP5 Pix piqued my interest, as the Pix patterns on the ball help the launch monitor “see” the ball more easily while it is leaving the club, resulting in a more accurate simulated ball flight.

Why I chose this golf ball

I decided on the TP5 Pix because it was a premium tour ball that offered the markings required to aid my launch monitor in tracking it. Along with the TP5 Pix, I tried the Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis ball—as that is also a premium ball with graphical markings on it (soccer ball style design). I did not like the feel of the Chrome Soft as much as the TP5; I found it to be a bit too “soft feeling” for my liking.

What I love about it

  • Distance: The TP5 provides solid distance—which is as expected from a tour-level-quality golf ball—as long as one generates enough swing speed to fully compress it. I hit this ball as far as other top models like the ProV1 and Bridgestone tour B, and farther than the Callaway Chrome Soft.
  • Feel: It’s not too soft off the tee, and not too hard feeling on the approach shots. It has a well-balanced feel that provides me both consistency and confidence.
  • Green Spin: One of the most important aspects of a high-quality golf ball is how it behaves on the green. The TP5 is impressive in this regard. I have zero issues holding a green from several distances due to the amount of spin I’m able to generate with this ball.
  • Durability: When investing in a higher-end, tour-caliber golf ball, durability carries some importance. I find the TP5 to hold up well versus many of its competitors—outlasting a ProV1, for example, in terms of scrapes and scratches on its cover. While some balls may become too scuffed to play after hitting one tree limb or cart path, I find the TP5 takes that abuse better. I can get a dozen rounds out of one ball assuming I don’t lose it.
  • Color: The TP5 Pix is a ball that has added graphics printed on it by design. These “Pix” offer an effective and unique alignment aid when it comes to putting. It also provides heightened visibility when using certain launch monitors, as the Pix on the ball helps the monitor to better estimate its spin during launch.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Other: Balls that feature printed graphics on them, like these TP5 Pix, may not suit everyone’s eye. I found them to offer a subtle and different alignment aid versus a Callaway Triple Track—but they may be too subtle for some.

Best shot with this golf ball

Considering my primary use for this ball is on my SkyTrak Simulator, hitting great shots is relative. That said, two of my five simulated hole-in-ones happened with this ball. Unfortunately, I’m still searching for my first “real life” ace.

Value for the money vs. other options

TaylorMade TP5 Pix is priced inline with the competing tour-level-quality golf balls. Callaway Chrome Soft, Bridgestone Tour B, and Wilson Staff Model are all in the same range. The Titleist ProV1 is an exception, as it sits above this price point. Whereas the Srixon Z-Star and Mizuno RB Tour both offer a bit better value at a slightly lower cost. This gives the TP5 a good, but not great, value in my opinion.

Final verdict

For those seeking a higher-quality, tour-caliber golf ball that offers great performance, and added graphics to help with alignment or use on a simulator, the TaylorMade TP5 Pix ball is a great choice.
