About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the iron set, which I purchased with my own money in June of 2020.

My take

Designed by Tiger Woods in collaboration with the company, the TaylorMade P7TW Iron Set is intended for the near scratch-level golfer. In my opinion, these irons are the pinnacle of blade-design irons currently available on the market. One of the top features of these clubs is the milled sole, which provides a unique type of interaction between the club and the turf. (No other club I’ve ever played has come close to replicating). The CNC machined sole geometry channels the club along the path of entry, no matter the turf conditions below the surface level. For those looking for the utmost level of control and playability from their iron set, the P7TW irons will surely not disappoint.

What I was looking for

When I purchased these clubs, I was looking for an iron set that could deliver the highest level of shot-shaping capabilities possible. Personally, I felt that distance was not an issue I needed any club technology assistance with, so sacrificing distance technology for far superior iron workability was at the forefront of my mind at the time.

Why I chose this club

At the time of this purchase, I had already considered and hit many different muscle back styles of irons, literally everything from all the brands—Titleist on down the line to Cobra. A friend recommended the TaylorMade P7TWs, and after I hit two or three shots, I knew that these were the clubs I would have in my bag for years to come. The level of knowledge and experience that Tiger and the R&D team at TaylorMade were able to integrate into these blade-type irons is befuddling. Longer blade length, a thinner topline, and the progressive face height give these blades a unique feel when standing over the ball—which inspires great confidence in the shotmaker to perform to their best ability, knowing the pinnacle of golf blade engineering is in hand.

What I love about it

  • Feel: These irons provide instant feedback about one’s ball strike, allowing the player to gain a deeper level of understanding of one’s swing in relation to shot outcome.
  • Sound: Crisp, clean sound, like cracking a whip when one strikes the ball.
  • Workability: If one can envision the shot, these irons can perform it—ergo, a draw or power fade, a wide-open flop shot to a stinger. Workability is by far the strongest attribute of these clubs.
  • Shaft Performance: Tested with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, these shafts performed and delivered repeatable results in all situations around the course.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The aesthetics of the clubs are very pleasing to the eye, inspiring confidence when standing over the ball at address.
  • Grip Feel: A bit on the heavier side, these clubs have a unique and dynamic feel in the hands from 3i down through to PW.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Distance: Typical to most blade irons, a decrease in carry distance is noted when compared with distance irons available on the market—each club plays about 10 yards shorter in carry.
  • Forgiveness: Usual unforgiving mishits with this type of blade; butter when it’s pure, stinging hands when it’s not.
  • Adjustability: Aside from changing the lie angle/shaft options, what one sees is what one gets.

Best shot with this club

Reflecting back upon the best shot I’ve performed with these clubs, my mind recalls a particular sand save my P7TW pitching wedge helped me perform on No. 15, “Lone Fir,” at Chambers Bay. Facing a really long bunker shot, I opened the clubface on the PW wide open and gave it a go. The shot ended up two feet from the cup for a tap-in par save and a whole new level of confidence in these clubs moving forward.

Value for the money vs. other options

For the advanced golfer in the market for a blade-style iron set, the TaylorMade P7TWs are one of the most sophisticated blade options available on the market to date. When compared to other similar muscle back style blades on the market, like the Titleist 620 MB, it may be difficult to spot the variances between blades—looking down along the iron’s topline—but this is where the similarities cease. For it’s the P7TW’s sole that really sets it apart; the geometry and milling of the sole on these irons create an unparalleled entrance and interaction through the turf, unlike any other blade out there.

Final verdict

All in all, these irons are the quintessence of blade irons on the market today. The culmination of over 22+ years of professional golf experience that Tiger brought to his collaboration with the R&D team at TaylorMade Golf has created one of the best iron sets available to date. These irons deliver the highest level of feel, workability, and control in a blade-style iron set, allowing an advanced golfer to play their best game possible.
