The 2023 Masters - Highlights

The first major of the year is in the books! Jon Rahm has captured his second career major (first was the 2021 U.S. Open) and won the 2023 Masters by four shots over his Arizona State Sun Devils mentor Phil Mickelson. In some interesting parallels to last year’s champion, Scottie Scheffler who 4-putted the final hole, Jon Rahm opened the tournament by 4-putting the first hole on Thursday, thanks to Superbowl Champion Zach Ertz!
This year’s Masters was a bit chaotic because of the inclement weather. Thursday and Friday afternoons were beautiful, and the field got off to a strong start with Brooks Koepka shooting 65 on Thursday and 67 on Friday. He was the fastest player to ever reach double digits under par at the Masters while Rahm was 4 shots back going into Saturday’s round.
But everything changed when the storms rolled in on Saturday afternoon. The leaders were only able to get through a third of their final round before play was suspended fully. The tournament forced the field to finish their third round on Sunday morning before starting the final round. Unfortunately, that pace shook Koepka up a bit and he played the weekend rounds at 5 over par to finish in a tie for second place with Phil Mickelson.
Jon Rahm, on the other hand, stayed cool, calm, and collected and ended up shooting 2 under par for the final 36 holes, helping him secure the second leg of the Grand Slam. This is Rahm’s fourth win of the season already and he collected a cool $3,240,000 as the winner’s share.
Interestingly enough, he becomes the fourth Spaniard to win the Masters, and it happened to be on the birthday of his Spanish hero Seve Ballesteros. Sunday, April 9th would have been his 66th birthday, and it was the 40th anniversary of Seve’s second Green Jacket in 1983!
What’s in Jon Rahm’s Bag?

There was an exciting mix of PGA Tour and LIV Golf Tour players in the mix on Sunday at the first major of the year. Make sure to tune into next month’s major, The PGA Championship, and see if Rahm can add the third leg of the Career Grand Slam to his belt. Or maybe former World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will be back in the mix after both had disappointing finishes at Augusta. Stay tuned for more golf coverage of the PGA Tour this summer! It should be an exciting summer with three more Major Championships on the horizon.
