What I was looking for

I was looking for the best wedges on the market. I wanted a premium feel, adjustability, milled grind soles, and a traditional look. Edel’s SMS Wedges filled every box.

Why I chose this club

I chose the Edel SMS Wedges to have the best wedges in golf. I did play Cleveland’s Zipcore wedges, Mizuno’s T22 Blue Ion wedges, and I considered Miura and Wilson as well. Edel was a no-brainer based on looks, design, and adjustability. I love every feature, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

What I love about it

  • Launch: These wedges are very easy to launch, which was something I was worried about before trying them. Many of the newer wedges have heavier club heads, which is not my favorite for launch reasons. Being able to change the club head weight was a huge bonus.
  • Forgiveness: I usually prefer a smaller-profile wedge, but the traditional look makes me forget about surface area. I feel comfortable hitting shots off the toe or heel.
  • Feel: These wedges offer an immaculate feel. The milled grind soles make turf interaction stand out in the best way possible. The easy-to-use bounce makes it so I can put the heavier head weight into the toe or heel based on my release of the club.
  • Spin: These wedges generate a ton of spin. Granted, they have minimal face wear, but I was really impressed by the spin control—being able to add and take off spin with ease. I am pleased with the lack of spin on some shots when I need to take off spin to get my ball to check and hold on fast or firm greens.
  • Bounce: For me, these wedges offer a perfect bounce. There is a reason they don’t offer custom bounce options. The way the wedges are designed is for a reason—Edel makes clubs with intent.
  • Around the Green: I love using these wedges greenside because it’s nice to have different sole grinds to give myself more shot options. I enjoy having the heavier weight in the toe to be able to keep my club face open through impact and lead with my hands.
  • Full Shots: Full shots with these wedges are fantastic. I’ve only hit one or two but had great results. I usually don’t hit full swing with my wedge shots to control trajectory and spin.
  • Shaft Feel: I used LA Golf 120x shafts to try them out. While they’re pricey, I’m impressed by the feel. Though I wouldn’t go with this exact setup again, as there are some other companies that I’d prefer to give a chance to, and I have been disappointed with LA’s marketing tactics.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Edel Wedges offer that aesthetic appeal that other wedges are missing. The adjustable weights look similar to a Callaway Mack Daddy. The milled grind soles, different sole grinds, and finishing are a work of art.
  • Grip Feel: I tried the Align Z Grip Full Cord from Golf Pride, and it’s easy to get my fingers resting in the right position.
  • Innovation: Adjustable head weights stand out for innovation. Absolutely love being able to adjust the wedges before rounds. Being able to hold or release my finish based on club head weight, and adjust how heavy the club heads are, really allows me to hone in on the ideal swing plane, amount of spin, roll out, and overall feel.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Customization: Not being able to customize bounce is surprising. I would have gone with a lower bounce if that was an option, as I prefer to dig my wedges a bit and like not seeing that leading edge. I did wait on the 60°, though, as they had yet to release their P grind when I purchased mine.

Turf Interaction yes please

Made for the golfer

Best Shot with this Wedge

My best shots with these Edels were within the first few weeks of getting them. It was cold out, and I was playing in the simulator. I had chip-ins on my first three simulator rounds with the Edel SMS Wedges. That will be tough to top.

Value for the money vs. other options

The Edel Golf SMS Wedges offer fantastic value for their price. But they're one of the most expensive wedges on the market for that reason. TaylorMade’s Milled Grind Sole options start just a bit less expensive. In my opinion, Edel’s adjustable weights and sole grinds are worth the cost upgrade.

Final verdict

Edel’s SMS Wedges are for golfers that are extremely picky about their gear. If anyone has been struggling to find a wedge to suit their game, Edel is a great place to start. Adjustable wedges are the future.
