What I was looking for

I needed new goggles as all the foam on the old pair was falling apart and uncomfortable. In addition, I was looking for a goggle to handle more light conditions, changeable lenses, and a wider field of vision than the I/O S I primarily used.

Why I chose this gear

I decided on this product because of the features and price. I was looking to try new brands and had considered other options, but the price was high compared to the features. I’ve used Dragon, Smith, Spy, and other brands. The lens quality is comparable to Smith, and the comfort is high with the higher-quality foam. I love the simplicity of these goggles.

What I love about them

  • Fit: The goggles fit true to my head and face, but women and small frames might find them large. The fit of the frame feels similar to more expensive options like Oakley or Smith.
  • Comfort: High-end comfort with a great easy-to-adjust strap and soft foam. The comfort of these goggles is hard to match. The foam is soft and smooth to the touch, making the goggles easy to wear all day. The frame is comfortable as it flexes and bends more to the contours of my face and forehead.
  • Visibility: Great wide field of vision, and the lenses come in low and high light conditions. The field of vision is larger than most in the price range. It can get a little foggy if the helmet and neck gator block the vents. My only issue with visibility is on high variable days, where it snows at the top but is warm and sunny at the bottom.
  • Face frame: Standard fit.
  • Strap: The strap is wide and adjustable on two sides. Features a grip strip to help stay in place on helmets. The grip strip is large and gooey, and the strap is high-quality elastic built to last.
  • Helmet compatibility: Fully compatible. It easily fits all helmet options.
  • Features: The goggles have anti-fog coated lens, an exchangeable lens system, a wide field of vision, and an adjustable strap.
  • Durability: Overall durability would be about 4 out of 5. The lens withstands minor collisions, but the frame is solid. The frame is a high-quality rubber/plastic composite, making them durable.
  • Other: The changeable lens system is easy to use, and Shred offers many color options.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Lens replacement: Yes, simply lock into notches in the frame. I initially had an issue with learning the lens change system; however, it’s very simple after one gets the hang of it. Not as easy as Mag systems.
  • Ventilation: The goggles have an anti-fog coating on the lens, but ventilation could be improved. Anti-fog could be better.
  • Other: Foam is very soft, and it’s easy to over-tighten the strap, causing my face to overheat and fog the goggles.
  • Any workarounds? Loosen the straps and release the pressure, allowing the foam to vent the moisture and hot air.

Favorite moment with this gear

My favorite moment with the goggles must have been this past season. A storm came in and dropped a good base of snow. A few days later, more snow came, allowing for deep powder turns in some untouched trees. So I hit up a favorite run or two and surfed feet of powder with fresh snow falling. Goggles kept my vision clear and open to rip silky S turns between maples.

Value for the money vs. other options

It was a great value for money compared to other options. Although, in full transparency, I did get a discount, I would buy these at full retail compared to options from Dragon, Oakley, or Smith.

Final verdict

The Shred Smartefy Goggles are great for anyone looking for simple, great-fitting goggles with multiple lenses. Super comfortable and durable that won't empty the wallet.

Born and raised in Vermont, winter sports have been my lifelong passion. In high school my friends would spend our weekends at Statton, Pico, Killington, or Jay Peak searching for untouched snow or working for a free pass. During the week you could find us in the backyard or hiking out into the wilderness filming our own grainy ski and snowboard videos and dreaming of big mountain snow. I started working in the snow and sports industry in 2005 with a summer operations job at Bromley Resort, a winter position at Okemo Mountain and have been hooked since. After graduating from Nichols College, I moved to Burlington, VT and starting working for a minor league baseball team in the summers and a local ski shop in the winters. After tuning, renting/leasing, and selling skis and snowboards, I moved onto managing a specilized retail store, operations manager at the Waffle Cabin, assistant manager of the fitness center at Okemo Mountain, and now currently work at Killington and Pico Ski Resort as a group and leisure sales representative. All while shredding over 60 days of year..... still shooting for 100. I can help you with any questions you may have about skis, snowboards, bindings, goggles, soft goods, or any other winter product you may need.
