Brand Claims
What does Wilson claim about this club? Wilson claims that these drivers can hang with the best in the business. Their adjustability, distance, the facets of the face, and their AI design are what keeps them up in line with this.
Overall Impressions
What are the specs of the club you are testing? The specs of the driver I tested are a nine degree head. I did the Ventus Blue Non-VeloCore 6-X shaft and the stock Lampkin grip that comes on the Wilson clubs as well.
What is your overall impression of the club? My first impression of the club, I was extremely impressed with it. You know the carbon version of this driver is what's going to fit my game more. But I definitely still see a market for the titanium - titanium has higher launching draw bias. I saw every bit of that draw bias while I was hitting it, actually hit a few out of bounds left, just because of the draw bias is prominent in the driver, and that’s not my typical shot shape.
Review
How is it for distance? As far as distance goes, the driver is very hot off the face. The AI designed face is intended to do just that. Wilson put their specs into a computer to spit out the variable face thickness, where each place in the face needs to be as far as how thin or thick. They’ve done this to work out the best possible face for the driver. I have to say distance was spot on. I didn't feel like I was losing a ton of distance on there. I didn't feel like I was gaining a ton of distance, but as far as keeping up with the Joneses, the Wilson driver was able to do that.
How is it for forgiveness? Forgiveness is fantastic on this model. Definitely the more forgiving of the two driver models as well.
How is it for workability? Their workability? Not so much workability. Definitely the carbon is more neutral bias, so it can be worked more left to right. I found the titanium driver to be hard to work right. It was almost exclusively center and more center left than anything. And like I said, I even hit two out of bounds left, because the draw bias is definitely prominent when you set the club down, no doubt about it. So if you’re one of those golfers who struggles with losing balls to the right or slicing, it’s definitely a club to consider.
How is its launch? The height of tee shots was impressive. I do like a lower ball flight personally, but again, testing these, I see why somebody would really want this as it does help you get the ball in the air. My ball flight significantly noticeably higher than with the other titanium model, so a lot more carry distance for me.
What do you find unique about its appearance? I didn't find a ton to be unique about the appearance, although on the steel, you're going to get more of just the flat matte finish with a little bit of patterned design at the back. Whereas with the carbon, you're getting more of the kind of I call it Kevlar or like knitted woven material. The carbon looks very much like a SIM 2, whereas this one has a very similar design just with a different material to it.
What may make a player shy away from it? I'm not sure there's a lot that's going to make a player shy away from it, unless you just like a really glossy look. These are both going to be matte, but the look is pretty classic. The alignment look is very classic. Black driver, it’s hard to really shy away from that.
How would you describe the sound of this club and feel at impact? Sound and feel at impact, I really love the sound and feel of the carbon driver. I wasn't as thrilled with the titanium one just because it had more of a louder “tinny” sound to it, and that’s not my favorite sound in the world to get with a driver. I think from just my ear and my feel, it would be harder for me to have the titanium in the bag regardless of what it did, just because I don’t want to hear that sound in a driver. For some people it doesn’t matter, some people like it, so I get that different clubs work differently for people.
Does this club swing light or heavy to you? Definitely has a heavier head, which is what happens when you have titanium instead of carbon.
Is the club adjustable? The club is adjustable. It’s the most adjustable driver that Wilson's ever produced, which is what I really like about it.
Are there any drawbacks to this club? Drawbacks to this club? Again, it's a draw based model. So if you already draw or you're maybe a hook, miss, this driver kind of leaves you out of the running, because it's really hard to fade this driver, it’s really hard to slice this driver, and it's made to do so. If you were to hit the driver high that’s going to be a drawback for you too.
Recommendations
Who would you recommend this club to? I would recommend this club to higher handicappers, people who need some forgiveness, people who really struggle with a slice, or missing the ball to their opposite side. For righties losing it right; Lefties slicing it left. If you struggle to get the ball in the air or want some more carry distance, you have trouble getting over trouble, water, trees, those kinds of things, this driver is really going to launch better for you.
Who should avoid this club, and what type of club would be a better option for that player? More advanced players are probably going to avoid this. Most lower handicappers want more workability. They want a more neutral bias. They want to be able to hit the ball left and right and not feel like it's so much work to do it that way. And I feel like especially going right this driver takes a lot of work, because you’re working against the natural making of it.
