The Curated Take

4.3/5

The Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid is best suited for mid to high-handicap golfers seeking a high-forgiveness club that simplifies achieving a high launch and soft landing. Its design features, including a draw bias setup and the thinnest face to date, enhance playability and distance, making it excellent for players struggling with slices or desiring an easy-to-launch option. However, its lack of adjustability and fixed hosel limit workability and shot shaping, making it less ideal for those seeking a piercing ball flight or extensive customization. Great for golfers who value forgiveness and a soft feel over shot shaping and adjustability.

Expert Reviews of the Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid

The Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid boasts high forgiveness, easy launch, and a draw bias ball flight to help mid to high-handicap players overcome a slice or a lower ball flight. During my testing of the ST-X 200 hybrid, I was very impressed by how soft the feel was on contact and truly how easy it was to get a nice high-launching ball flight, in part due to the Wave Sole for effortless turf interaction. I tend to hit more of a draw as my typical shot shape, so the draw bias nature wasn't the best suited for me, but can see it helping out players that see a right miss or slice with their current hybrid. I hit the ball all over the face on the hybrid and thought the higher forgiveness was really effective in keeping shots straight and getting consistent distances. On the topic of distance, Mizuno has implemented the thinnest face to date on the ST-X 220. This helps to maximize ball speeds and gain as much distance as possible. I highly recommend this hybrid to anyone looking for an easy-to-swing draw-bias option.
The Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid is nothing short of remarkable. If someone is looking for a smooth-feeling hybrid that lands soft on the greens or in the fairway, this is for them! While trying this (which was over three months), I found this club forgiving and easy to get out of tough situations like in deep rough or off-the-tee box with a tight fairway. It feels super soft off of the face with that classic Mizuno forged feeling, and when I hit it just right, it flies for days. It has a great profile as it is not that big of a hybrid; it's more on the smaller side. This hybrid will keep golfers in play and land soft.

Workability

3/5
gave 3 of 5 stars. The deep internal weighting on the ST-X 220 combined with the added offset on the hosel helps to add forgiveness but makes working the ball in both directions harder to accomplish. For most players, the offset on the hosel is going to produce a straight-to-draw bias flight, making the other shot shape a slightly more difficult task.
gave 3 of 5 stars. The ST-X 220 is not the easiest club to hit on-command draws and cuts with, but it is definitely possible. The main job of the club is to be forgiving and feel smooth, not work the ball in different directions. However, during my testing, I have been able to work the ball both ways. Sometimes, it takes more precision.

Forgiveness

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. Finding consistency with the Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid was very easy to accomplish. Mishits still produced a nice high launch and maintain most of the distance. I hit the ball all over the face of the ST-X 220 and was surprised to not be overly penalized on many mishits. Cannot recommend highly enough if someone's looking for something easy to hit.
gave 5 of 5 stars. The Mizuno ST-X 220 is extremely forgiving. It uses the new and improved sole of the club for super smooth turf interaction. The ST-X 220 also has the CoreTec Chamber that helps the ball reach the intended target by "cupping" the ball on off-center hits to give one the most forgiveness possible.

Feel

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. A soft but crisp feel at impact is how I could classify the feel on the Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid. I could feel the trampoline effect off the face giving a softer feel than some other hybrids I've tested. Contact was also very crisp, not dull feeling on mishits. Mizuno seems to always make great feeling clubs and this one is no different.
gave 5 of 5 stars. Mizuno has always been known for having the smoothest feeling clubs on the market, and that has not changed with the ST-X 220. This hybrid has the classic forged Mizuno face, making it ever so soft, and the way the ball compresses off the face is smooth like butter.

Sound

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. To put a bow on the whole package, the Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid also sounds fantastic at impact. A clean, crisp sound both on center and off-center strikes will undoubtedly appeal to a wide range of players. When hitting the hybrid off the turf or the tee, the sound was equally as pleasing.
gave 4 of 5 stars. There is nothing special about the sound, to be honest. It is not the best-sounding hybrid on the market but not the worst-sounding hybrid. It sounds like a solid hybrid, not clicky or tacky like I have noticed with Ping. It sounds club to me.

Launch

4/5
gave 4 of 5 stars. I found getting a high ball flight to be one of the strengths of the Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid. Added offset from the hosel along with a center of gravity that is low and placed further back in the head are both elements that help to achieve a consistently high ball flight.

Distance

4/5
gave 4 of 5 stars. Mizuno's thinnest face to date on their ST-X 220 hybrid definitely enhanced the feel as well as the overall ball speeds I was seeing during my testing. I was averaging about 4-5 extra yards over my current 4 hybrid. I think a lot of players will see some distance gains with the ST-X 220.
gave 4 of 5 stars. I did not expect this club to have the distance it did. I was expecting just a smooth-feeling hybrid, but this was a pleasant surprise. When I tested it alongside other top-selling hybrids like the Stealth and TSR hybrids, it kept up very well and was about the same distance!

FAQs

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

I loved everything about the first swing with the Mizuno ST-X hybrid. This was my first time testing a Mizuno hybrid in-depth and thought the first swing on the range was really impressive. Effortless launch, outstanding feel, and great sound were all features that immediately stood out to me.
My favorite moment with this club was hitting the 5-hybrid from 220 out at TPC River Highlands on hole 13. The club felt like it sat perfectly on the fairway and made me confident that I could hit a high cut into the green over the water. I took a swing, and it did exactly what I wanted it to do. Ever since then, the club has gone into my bag permanently.

Why did you choose this product?

The Mizuno ST-X 220 hybrid is a great option for mid to high-handicap players who would like an easy to launch and highly forgiving club for a wide range of shots. At address, the ST-X 220 inspires a lot of confidence with some offset, a compact shape, and clean overall look. The shape really suits my eye and is a big reason why I felt confident hitting shots with it. I was really impressed by the feel at impact as well. The ST-X 220 has Mizuno's thinnest face yet in a hybrid and I could definitely feel the trampoline effect off the face with a soft feel. Additionally, the ease in which it was able to hit a high ball flight with my normal shot shape was also highly impressive. I believe the overall performance of the club combined with its feel and looks are going to appeal to a lot of players who enjoy hitting hybrids or want to find an easy to hit alternative to their long irons.
I chose this product because I needed a hybrid that was both forgiving and "anti-hook." I struggled with the hooks with my hybrids before, but I could tell the difference ever since I discovered that Mizuno doesn't make them as upright as other brands. The ST-X 220 is perfect for golfers of all handicaps who want a smooth-feeling, forgiving hybrid that they can use anywhere on the course.

What is the value for the money versus other options?

The Mizuno ST-X 220 is competitively priced with other similar performing hybrids on the market today. With the overall performance of the ST-X 220 and its ease of use, I believe it offers solid value to players looking to add in a hybrid to their bag.
The ST-X 220 sits around roughly $224.99, which is close to other top brands like TaylorMade and Callaway. Some other brands even have hybrids for around $250, so this is a little bit cheaper, which always helps. I think it deserves to be up there because I believe it is the best hybrid on the market. Golfers cannot go wrong with Mizuno.

What do you love about this product?

I really enjoyed how easy it was to hit the ST-X 220 hybrid. I tested out the 4-hybrid and loved the soft feel, high launch, consistent draw flight, and overall performance.
The Mizuno ST-X 220 Hybrid is one of my favorite hybrids to grace the market. The face of the club is extremely soft, leaving me with a phenomenal feeling. Most hybrids are 4-6° upright, but Mizuno makes them 1° upright, which helps with the common golfer's hook of the golf ball with a hybrid. These are just a couple of reasons why I love the ST-X 220.
