Overall Impressions
What are the specs of the club you are testing? I tested the standard model fairway wood with a loft of 15 degrees. I have the Ventus Red TR 6x Velocore shaft. I used the stock TaylorMade grip.
What is your overall impression of the club? There are three versions of this club like last year’s Stealth. There is the Stealth, which is the standard head with neutral bias. There is the HD model, which has a high draw, so you're going to have a draw bias on that and a bigger head. The standard head comes in at 185cc; the HD is going to be 200cc. Then, there's the Stealth Plus, the gamer model and lower handicap model that's going to have the sliding weight in the head, and that's only going to be 170cc. Technology between the three is very much the same, except for the draw bias and the bigger head of the HD model.
Review
How is it for forgiveness? I tried this out on the course and on the range. And, to be honest with you, this setup was not my favorite. I didn't hit it that well. It was all over the map as far as accuracy goes. I know part of that can be a swing, but also most of you, like me, are not going to hit the face or center of the face every single time. So, you want to know how a club is going to perform off of center hits. This one doesn't have a ton of forgiveness.
How is its launch? The standard model is a little bit lower launching than the HD, so it has a mid to high launch, whereas the HD is high laugh. It's going to launch off the center of the face more when they have their patented V-sole design and a heavier weight in the back of the club.
How is it in terms of ball speed? This club has tons of speed. If you hit this on the center of the face and you hit it square, it does launch like a rocket.
How is it for spin? The standard model also has mid to low spin, whereas TaylorMade is calling the spin on the HD mid spin.
What do you find unique about its appearance? The standard model, the HD model, and the women's model are all going to have the C300 steel face. Now, on the Stealth Plus model, the face is going to be titanium. Also, TaylorMade has redone the carbon crown. It is a gloss finish, though, so it is a bit harder to look at in the sun, but it is a pretty golf club to look at.
What may make a player shy away from it? I was having trouble launching it. I was having trouble getting it where I wanted to go. It does seem tailored more to a better player's club. While I can hit this, I think there are better options on the market if you're looking for a more forgiving 3-wood.
How would you describe the sound of this club and feel at impact? It feels fantastic. The sound and the feel of it are great. When you hit it perfectly or when you hit it right, it's awesome. It reminds you of golf clubs of old. Golf clubs of olf, you had to hit them well if you wanted them to perform.
Does this club swing light or heavy to you? For the Stealth 2, TaylorMade has redistributed a little bit of the weight. They've lowered the center of gravity from the first Stealth. They've been able to take weight off of the toe, move it down and deeper into the heel, into the innards of the club, so you're getting a better launching club.
Is the club adjustable? There's no adjustability on the standard model, only on the Stealth Plus model, just like last year, so the heads can’t be maneuvered.
Are there any drawbacks to this club? With the Stealth 2, you're going to have fewer shaft and grip stock options. And, in my opinion, the stock options are a bit worse. You have to upgrade to really get those shafts and they do cost more than when the Stealth came out, as well.
Recommendations
Who would you recommend this club to? If you want to stay with the Stealth line, get the original Stealth. It's cheaper and the performance is minutely different, if at all. So, Stealth 1 would be my recommendation as far as staying in the Stealth family right now.
