The Curated Take
4.4/5
The TaylorMade P790 UDI Hybrid Irons offer an optimal balance of forgiveness and workability for experienced players. While not as workable as a blade, the club handles ball direction effortlessly. Its Thru Pocket Speed Slot enhances forgiveness on thin shots. The forged face and SpeedFoam Air provide a soft yet fast feel on solid strikes. Notably long, this club can outdistance a 5-wood, making it ideal for those desiring iron-style confidence with increased tee shot distance.
Ideal for
- Very fast ball speed and excellent distance
- Stellar launch combined with impeccable feel
- Great fairway finder for a good ball striker
- Thin top line for a driving iron
- Very versatile
- Very forgiving of mis-hits around the face
- Fits with any iron set
Not ideal for
- Recommended for only high swing speed players
- Feedback isn't ideal: tough to tell where ball was struck on the face
- Distance control and dispersion front-to-back can be wide
- Not as workable as a more bladed long iron

Expert Reviews of the TaylorMade 2021 P790 UDI Hybrid Irons
Nate Cox I am a lower handicap golfer that has always preferred to hit irons over woods. With my previous set of irons, my 3 iron was my safety club off the tee over my 5 wood, despite the 20-30 yards of distance lost between the two. I attribute that to the fact that I feel much more confident with an iron behind the ball at address than a wood. With that being the case, it made the TaylorMade P790 2 iron UDI a great option for me, and so far I have not been disappointed. It has provided me with more confidence off the tee and still provides me some good forgiveness on low strikes because of the speed pocket it has in the bottom, to help the bounce flex when the ball is struck low. One thing that I have found, and this could largely be due to the Mitsubishi MMT 105 shaft I have in it, is that I flight this club much lower than my 5 wood, but can get after one off the tee and hit it about the same distance. I love the variety this gives me. If I need a flighted fairway finder off the tee, I have this, and if i need higher approach to stop into the green, I have my 5 wood from the same distance. I think that this club is a really great option for a better player that is looking for something reliable off the tee.
Jeremy Brown There is simply no other 2 iron available today that is as long and forgiving as this one. It launches like a hybrid, so high-spin players may not be optimizing their ball flight with this club. If you want to join the 2-iron club, I can think of no better entry point.
Mackenzie Nelson This product is great for high speed players that would prefer to hit an iron than a hybrid or wood. I would highly recommend this club for players that launch the ball too high and tend to hook the ball with hybrids or woods. This club will provide ample distance off the tee and will still allow you to launch the ball high coming into long par 4s or par 5s, without the ball ballooning. I was blown away by the sound and feel of this club during my testing session with it.
Michael V TaylorMade's P790 UDI (Utility Driving Iron) Hybrid Iron is a great option for any golfer that wants a lower lofted iron feel with forgiveness. Offering a slightly oversized face, slim top line and sole, the P790 UDI is a popular option for low to mid-handicappers that strike their irons well.
Owen D This product is great for a low handicapper who is looking to fill a gap in the top of their bag. This is a wonderful option off the tee for any situation presented. Wonderful for links golf and golf in Europe due to the low launch and dry conditions. Excellent driving iron that, for low handicappers, can be used off of the deck as easily as a hybrid. Meant to replace hybrid for different scenarios when a high launch is not wanted nor needed.

Workability
4/5
Nate Cox gave 4 of 5 stars. This utilizes a lot of technology such as the perimeter tungsten weighting to make this club forgiving, and a byproduct of that is that you just won't experience the workability of a blade where you could more easily hit some big slinging draws, but with the being said, working the ball in both directions with this club is no challenge for the more experienced player.
Forgiveness
4/5
Nate Cox gave 4 of 5 stars. For a player's distance type iron, the forgiveness of this club is great in comparison to other irons in this category. Of course, in comparison to a game improvement iron, this is not very forgiving at all. For driving irons, this does look and play more like a standard iron with little offset and a definite player's look and feel. The Thru Pocket Speed Slot certainly increases ball speed on those strikes low in the face, so I would say that it is quite forgiving on thin shots, but on all other mishits, it will perform as you'd expect a player's distance iron to perform.
Feel
5/5
Nate Cox gave 5 of 5 stars. The forged face in the P790 UDI gives you a really soft feel off the club face that you would expect from a forged club. What surprised me was the speed. The hollow club head (with the SpeedFoam Air behind the face) seemed to make the extra speed off the club face really tangible compared to the P7MC irons that I play 4-PW.
Sound
4/5
Nate Cox gave 4 of 5 stars. Sound is definitely a personal preference thing. For me, I like a club to sound like a pretty muffled, dead, thwack. I personally don't like the sound of a ping off the club face, and I also don't like it to sound too clicky either. This club is nearly perfect in that regard. The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because the sound off the club face is just a hair on the clicky side, though not anything that bothers me.
Distance
5/5
Nate Cox gave 5 of 5 stars. I am not a short hitter by any means. Now, I am not going to be winning any long drive competitions, but compared to the average amateur, I would say that I hit the ball pretty long. Prior to putting this club in the bag, my safe club off the tee was a 3 iron that I would hit about 230. My hopes with this club would be that I would be able to hit this about 245 to get a good gapping with my 5 wood, which is my 255 club. I am considering ditching my 5 wood altogether because it has not been uncommon to hit this club 250 with the occasional no-spin bomb out to 265-270. So, I would say this thing is very long.
FAQs
What was your favorite moment with this gear?
Nate Cox My favorite moment with this club came when faced with a tight driving hole into the wind. My hope with these irons was that I would be able to flight a tee shot down with no spin for a stinger type tee shot into the wind, and when faced with that exact scenario, I was able to hit a tight low draw back into the wind perfectly. Very happy with this club.
Why did you choose this product?
Nate Cox I chose this product because I wanted a club that was long off the tee that gave me confidence for demanding tee shots. I have always been more comfortable with an iron in my hand than a wood, with my previous fairway finder club being a 3 iron. I wanted to find something that would give me that confidence stepping up to the tee but that would give me a little more distance off the tee with it. The P790 UDI paired with the low spin and launch Mitsubishi MMT 105 TX shaft has been a great answer to this need.
What is the value for the money versus other options?
Nate Cox $250 for an iron isn't the most affordable club on the market, but if you are a more advanced player looking for a driving iron packed with technology that performs really well, then the P790 UDI is a great value proposition. I would choose to spend my money here over most 4 or 5 wood options.
What do you love about this product?
Nate Cox I love the confidence this club gives me, especially off the tee. In my previous set of irons, my 3 iron was my "fairway finder" that I could hit off the tee when I didn't feel comfortable pulling the driver, because I have always felt more confident seeing an iron at address than a wood. The downfall of that was that I could only manage to get about 230 yds off the tee, which could leave me longer than is ideal into some longer par 4s. With this P790 UDI, I have been able to experience that comfort with more forgiveness and about 255 yds off the tee.
