The Curated Take

3.9/5

The Burton Stylus Snowboard is a versatile, beginner-friendly choice, offering a forgiving, easy-to-ride experience, particularly on groomed runs. Its soft flex aids in making playful park rides and aids learners in linking turns. However, this flexibility limits its high-speed stability and carving capacity. While it's durable and handles various terrains and conditions well, advanced riders seeking aggressive riding or specific park-oriented features might find it less satisfactory. It's a cost-effective choice for progression and gaining confidence on the mountain.

Ideal for
  • Soft flex and catch-free profile make it easier to initiate turns and control the board, helping riders build confidence on the slopes
  • Directional shape and setback stance provide better flotation in powder and improved maneuverability in various conditions
  • Forgiving on mistakes and helps minimize catching edges, making it easier to recover from errors and reducing the likelihood of falls
Not ideal for
  • More advanced riders may find its performance lacking
  • Primarily designed for groomed runs and beginner-to-intermediate terrain

Expert Reviews of the Burton Stylus Snowboard

Jessica B. The Burton Stylus is best suited for beginners or intermediate riders looking for a forgiving and easy-to-ride board that performs well on groomed runs and offers versatility in various conditions. The soft flex and catch-free profile that makes the Stylus easy to ride can also result in slightly reduced edge-to-edge quickness, which may be noticeable when making quick turns or learning to carve aggressively. While the Stylus can handle some park riding, it's not specifically designed for freestyle performance. Riders looking for a board with more aggressive pop or specific park-oriented features may find the Stylus lacking in that regard. While the Stylus is great for riders trying to progress their skills, it may lack the responsiveness and stability desired by experienced riders who prefer a more aggressive and dynamic ride.

Review Ratings

Flotation

4/5
Jessica B. gave 4 of 5 stars. Even though this board is not designed for powder days, it handles them well. The longer nose helps riders float without having to put in too much work and it is easy to adjust riding stance to be more suitable for deep snow. It wont necessarily feel surfy like boards that are designed for deep snow, but it handles well and is a bunch of fun on powder days.

Carving

3/5
Jessica B. gave 3 of 5 stars. The soft flex of this board also makes it more difficult to lay down hard carves, especially at high speeds. This is not a board that will be able to approach techniques like "Eurocarving", but it can easily handle lower speed carving on groomers. Riders looking to carve at high speeds or get low to the ground should consider a stiffer option.

High Speed Stability

3/5
Jessica B. gave 3 of 5 stars. Since this board is pretty soft to be more forgiving for beginner riders, it does not handle steep or high-speed runs well. Riders will feel chunder if they try to go too fast with this board and may feel out of control because it cannot carve like a stiffer board.

Playfulness

4/5
Jessica B. gave 4 of 5 stars. The softness of this board allows riders to become playful once they have gained confidence. This board is a bunch of fun to take into the park and jib off side jumps. It is also really easy to butter, which is a fun and steezy trick to learn.

Durability

4/5
Jessica B. gave 4 of 5 stars. While this board will easily last a few seasons, riders may feel it is too soft. Also, it is less durable than a stiffer board, so riders should keep that in mind if they take it into the park or tree runs. If riders plan on progressing to more aggressive riding quickly, this board may not keep up with their skills. The channel system can sometimes be a little wonky, but Burton has a pretty good warranty.

Turn Ease

5/5
Jessica B. gave 5 of 5 stars. This board is ideal for riders learning to make turns and link them together. The forgiving nature of this board gives riders a lot of leniency while they learn how to shift from edge to edge. It is hard to catch an edge on this board compared to something stiffer.

Versatility

4/5
Jessica B. gave 4 of 5 stars. Even though this board has a pretty soft flex rating, it can handle diverse conditions and terrain. It can also handle steep backcountry laps or moguls. It performs best on groomers but is still a lot of fun in the park and quick enough on its edges to maneuver through tree runs.

FAQs

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Jessica B. My favorite moment with this gear was teaching my brother's girlfriend how to ride on this board during their college winter break. She was very nervous, but this board's forgiving nature gave her confidence after a few laps. She had never ridden before but was linking turns on her second day. It's amazing to see how big of a difference a flexible board focused on progression makes while learning.

Why did you choose this product?

Jessica B. I chose this product because my roommate worked at a Burton store, and I could get a discount. I also knew it was highly recommended for skill progression. My brother's girlfriend was looking for a soft board that would be forgiving for her to learn on, and the Stylus hit every mark.

What is the value for the money versus other options?

Jessica B. There are cheaper boards for riders just starting out, but the Stylus's performance is hard to beat at its price point.

What do you love about this product?

Jessica B. This product is great for teaching people how to ride and gain confidence on the mountain. As mentioned, my brother's girlfriend had never ridden before. We threw her on this board during her college winter break, and she was linking turns on her second day.
