TL;DR: JURA espresso machines are great options for anyone looking for a top-of-the-line super-automatic machine (for the home or even workplace). Within the well-respected JURA brand, there are many different models to choose from. When buying a JURA espresso machine, consider your budget, counter space, desired customization options, daily usage, and interest in smart features. Determining your priorities will help you find the perfect machine for your lifestyle.

As a Coffee & Espresso Expert at Curated and a long-time espresso lover, I've advised hundreds of customers on the best espresso machines for them. Working as a barista for six years and co-managing a coffee shop for two years exposed me to all types of coffee and coffee drinkers—and it taught me that there is no one-size-fits-all in terms of home espresso machines! I love helping people find the right machine for them and explaining some of the complex, jargony aspects of home espresso!

Why JURA?

JURA is one of the most well-known and well-respected names in super-automatic espresso machines. JURA is a Swiss brand known for making high-quality and innovative coffee and espresso machines, for nearly a century now. JURA machines are known for their elegant design, easy-to-use interface, exceptional espresso quality, and ability to create a wide range of coffee drinks at the touch of a button.

JURA may be the right brand for you if you are looking for a truly top-notch super-automatic coffee machine that does not sacrifice convenience for quality. JURA coffee machines have some of the best espresso of any super-automatic espresso machine, and they are also noted for their durable, quality construction. However, these features do come at a high price, making JURA coffee machines typically not best for those wanting to find a low-cost machine.

JURA offers a range of super-automatic espresso machines, ranging from simple ones that only make a couple drinks, to ones that can produce complex drinks meant for high-volume commercial settings. If you think a JURA machine may be right for you, read on to learn more about the key differences between machines in their extensive lineup.

What to Consider When Buying a JURA Espresso Machine

The number of options within the JURA lineup can feel overwhelming. The following questions can help narrow down your search to find the best JURA model for you.

1. How Much Counter Space Do You Have?

Sizing is important for any espresso machine, especially in a home kitchen. JURA offers compact models for those with limited space, as well as larger machines suited for a workplace or commercial setting. Measure your counter space (and under-cabinet height) and consider how the machine's dimensions will fit into your setup. Make sure to consider where the water tank removes from and where you’ll fill the bean hopper. Ideally, you’d have a good amount of clearance above and/or to the side of the machine, to give you space to remove or fill various components.

2. How Important is Customization to You?

JURA machines offer varying levels of customization, often at different costs. If you enjoy experimenting with different coffee styles and like to have lots of options, consider a machine with advanced features like more preprogrammed drinks, adjustable coffee strength, temperature, and milk frothing options. If you have several people using the machine on a regular basis, user profiles may be helpful to program different sets of preferences. On the other hand, if you prefer a simpler, more consistent espresso experience and tend to stick to a couple basic drinks (espresso, cappuccino, latte, americano, etc.), a basic model without advanced customization features may suffice. At the end of the day, you’ll have to consider if the extra features are worth the extra price for you and your coffee habits.

3. How Often Do You Plan to Use Your Espresso Machine?

Consider the daily coffee consumption of all the potential coffee drinkers in your household. If your household has multiple coffee fanatics and/or you entertain guests frequently, you may benefit from a machine with a larger water tank, bean hopper, and a dual spout for simultaneous brewing. These features can make life a little easier when brewing several drinks back-to-back, or when just making lots of drinks per day.

4. Are You Interested in Smart Features and App-Connectivity?

JURA models with Smart Connect or Wifi Connect offer smart features like app connectivity to the JURA Operating Experience (J.O.E.) app, allowing your phone or other smart devices to control the machine, customize coffee recipes, and access maintenance reminders. If you appreciate cutting-edge technology and the convenience of controlling your espresso machine remotely, look for a JURA model with these capabilities. It is worth noting that you may require additional accessories, such as the WiFi Connect accessory.

5. What’s Your Budget?

One of the largest factors that will limit your choice of JURA machines is your desired budget. JURA offers a range of machines with varying features and price points. Entry-level models start at around $1,000 (JURA ENA 4) and provide the essential brewing functions, while high-end machines can exceed $5,000 (JURA GIGA 10 or JURA GIGA X8) and offer extensive customization, large brewing capacity, and advanced technology. A clear budget helps you narrow down your options and ensures you get the best machine for your money.

Differences Between JURA’s Espresso Machines

JURA's super-automatic espresso machines differ in various aspects, including design, functionality, customization options, and price points. Here are some key differences among their popular models:

  • Design and size: JURA offers a range of machines from compact models—like the JURA ENA 4 and JURA ENA 8—to larger models with bigger bean hoppers and water tanks, such as the JURA Z8 or GIGA series. Smaller machines are best for kitchens with limited counter space, while larger ones are ideal for those who want to brew large quantities of drinks for a crowd.
  • Customization options: JURA machines vary in the level of coffee customization they offer. Some models, like the JURA E6 or JURA S8, allow you to adjust basic aspects such as coffee strength, brewing temperature, and milk frothing. In contrast, higher-end models, like the JURA Z8, offer more advanced options like customizable coffee recipes and precise temperature control, to give you ultimate control over your drinks. More customization allows you to really dial in your drinks exactly how you like them, but this does come with a higher price tag.
  • Drink variety: Higher-end JURA models typically offer a wider range of beverage options. For example, the JURA GIGA series can prepare up to 28 different drinks, including espresso, ristretto, cappuccino, and macchiato. More entry-level models have more limited preprogrammed options. For example, the JURA ENA 4 does not offer any milk-based drinks (since it does not have a milk frother) and specializes in simple espresso-based drinks. If you stick to straight espresso and have no need for steamed milk, this could be a great pick for you.
  • Smart features and connectivity: Some JURA machines come with smart features like app connectivity, as mentioned earlier. This allows you to control the machine remotely, customize coffee recipes, and receive maintenance reminders. For example, the JURA Z8 has these smart features, while entry-level models typically lack them. Some people may love these additional features, while others may not need a “smart” machine.
  • Price points: JURA's super-automatic espresso machines range from entry-level models at around $1000, to high-end, high-capacity machines that can exceed $5000. The differences in price reflect differences in design and features.

Features to Look for in JURA Espresso Machines

There are some key features that make JURA machines stand apart from other super automatics. Below are a few characteristic features of JURA machines:

  • Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System: This technology optimizes coffee extraction by pre-infusing the coffee grounds before brewing the shot of espresso, resulting in a more even extraction and more flavorful espresso. Pre-infusion is a desirable feature of espresso machines, and a great addition to the JURA brewing process.
  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): P.E.P. is JURA’s patented brewing system that provides some of the highest quality espresso possible from a super-automatic machine. It pulses water through the coffee grounds in quick intervals, enhancing the flavor of espresso and ristretto. This process is unique to JURA, and one of the reasons that the brand surpasses competitors in its espresso quality.
  • Fine Foam Technology: JURA machines with a milk frothing system with fine foam technology produce a fine, velvety milk foam for milk-based drinks like cappuccinos and lattes. The milk frothing is easy to use and makes great milk-based drinks.
  • Aroma G3 Grinder: This conical burr grinder is designed for fast, quiet, and consistent grinding. It’s great for an integrated grinder within a super automatic machine.
  • Intelligent Water System (I.W.S.): The IWS uses RFID technology to detect the presence of a JURA water filter, ensuring good water quality for brewing and reducing the need for descaling. Water filters will need to be replaced periodically for ideal functioning, however.
  • JURA Operating Experience (J.O.E.): J.O.E. is an app that connects your smartphone or smart watch to your JURA machine via Bluetooth, allowing you to control your machine remotely. This is a great feature for those wanting a high-tech coffee experience at home.
  • Energy Save Mode: JURA machines with Energy Save Mode reduce energy use, lessening environmental impact and lowering your electric bill.
  • Thermoblock Heating System: JURA machines use a Thermoblock system for rapid heating and temperature control, to acheive consistent brewing quality and quick operation on busy mornings.
  • One-Touch Operation: Many JURA models offer one-touch operation for a wide range of coffee beverages, providing a user-friendly experience. Each JURA machine offers a different selection of preprogrammed options, so make sure to double-check that your favorite drinks are available on the machine you select.
  • Integrated cleaning and maintenance programs: JURA machines are designed with easy cleaning in mind, and feature integrated cleaning, rinsing, and descaling programs that make maintenance painless. Some machines, like the JURA E8, offer a one-touch milk rinsing system, to further simplify and automate cleaning after each use, and to make your life just a little easier and more efficient!

How to Choose the Right JURA Espresso Machine for You

Choosing between the many machines offered by JURA can be confusing. Read on below for three examples of different types of coffee drinkers looking for a high-end super-automatic machine. If any of these examples resonate with you, check out the recommended products for each!

Fernando

Needs

Fernando is looking for a simple espresso machine to make high-quality espresso at the press of a button. Fernando is a self-proclaimed coffee snob, and loves his espressos and occasional americanos. He doesn’t have any interest in milk frothing, and is willing to spend money for quality brewing and great espresso.

Features to look for

While Fernando doesn’t need milk frothing, he does need great espresso brewing technology. He should look for a top-notch espresso machine, but may want a model without milk frothing abilities. Overall, JURA would be a good fit for him to get the best possible espresso quality at the press of a button.

Products to consider

The JURA ENA 4 (left) and the JURA E4 (right)

  • JURA ENA 4: This is a great option for Fernando, as this machine is simple, no frills, and specializes in espresso. The ENA 4 is under $1k, offers four preprogrammed drink options, and has a relatively small size and footprint, with a minimalist design.
  • JURA E4: Another machine specializing in espresso and coffee, and it also doesn’t have milk frothing abilities. The E4 has a larger footprint, bigger water tank, and bigger bean hopper than the ENA 4, so size/capacity may determine which machine Fernando picks.

Julie and Nigel

Needs

Julie and Nigel are busy parents of three, and they don’t have much time for making coffee in the morning, or cleaning and maintaining their espresso machine. They’re looking for an at-home machine that will be just as quick (or quicker) than the daily drive to the local coffee shop. They both enjoy milk-based espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites. They’d also like to be able to make steamers and hot chocolates for their kids on occasion.

Features to look for

Julie and Nigel need a machine that’s quick and makes a range of drinks. Integrated auto-cleaning features would be great for them and their busy lifestyle.

Products to consider

The JURA E8 (left) and the JURA S8 (right)

  • JURA E8: This would be a great pick for Nigel and Julie, as it has an integrated one-touch milk cleaning system to make life as easy as possible. It also has 17 different preprogrammed specialty drinks, giving them a wide range of options to choose from.
  • JURA S8: This machine would be another great option for Nigel and Julie to consider for their family. The S8 offers a more user-friendly touchscreen display for even easier use and still has an impressive 15 preprogrammed drinks.

Don

Needs

Don is a techie, and he wants his whole household full of state-of-the-art machines and technologies. He wants app integration so he can use his phone or smart watch to control the machine. He likes a variety of drinks, and he often has friends and family over who he’d make several drinks for.

Features to look for

Don should look for a machine with J.O.E. compatibility, to allow him to control his machine remotely. He should also consider a larger machine with a bigger water tank and bean hopper, so he can make drinks for a crowd. Finally, Don should also look for a solid selection of preprogrammed drinks.

Products to consider

The JURA Z10 (left), the JURA WE8 (middle), and the JURA S8 (right)

  • JURA Z10: This is one of the most advanced home espresso machines that JURA offers. It features an impressive 32 preprogrammed drinks, integrated WiFi connectivity for use with J.O.E., a cold brewing process, and a Product Recognizing Grinder (P.R.G.) that automatically optimizes the grind for either a hot or cold beverage selection.
  • JURA WE8: This machine would be a great choice for Don to make up to 30 drinks a day for friends and family. It is also compatible with J.O.E. and has 12 preprogrammed drink options.
  • JURA S8: This machine offers a touchscreen display for easy navigation and has a sleek, futuristic interface. The S8 is also compatible with J.O.E., and it offers 15 preprogrammed drinks for a wide selection of options.
