Expert Review: Callaway Paradym Driver [with Video]
Video Transcript
My name is Michael Harris and I'm a Golf Expert at Curated. If you haven't visited us yet, fill out a short quiz and let us help you find the perfect golf clubs. Today, I'm very excited. I want to talk about the Callaway Paradym driver, the hottest driver on the market in 2023 in my opinion. Having tested both the Stealth 2 and the Paradym, and even the old Stealth compared to this, all three are very, very good drivers. They're all very competitive in terms of performance with each other, but at the end of the day, as much as I've tried to switch, I still keep going back to my Paradym.
What I Play
Now, full disclosure, I actually play the Paradym Triple Diamond, which is the 450 CC version of this driver with a smaller profile. It's a little bit more geared towards that Pro Player. Callaway also has the Paradym, though, which is what most of you golfers watching this video are going to want to look for. There's also the Paradym X, which is more of a draw bias, and we'll talk about that in a different video.
What the Paradym is Ideal for
So, the Paradym is a game improvement driver but it's geared for distance as well, and it's probably one of the longest drivers that Callaway has ever produced. We're seeing that through the testing and real-life experience. For instance, John Rahm won at the Masters this year with the Paradym driver, and that's on a golf course that demands control, but also demands distance in order to be at the top of that leaderboard.
Carbon Chassis Technology
Now, here's where we're going to start when it comes to the Paradym driver. There was a breakthrough in technology in several different areas, but the first one we'll talk about was the 360 carbon chassis. Traditionally, a club was built out of titanium and it was basically like one piece of titanium and there wasn't a whole lot you could do in terms of moving weights around, changing different features, and creating different centers of gravity. But with a carbon chassis, we're able to save a ton of weight and still have a super strong structure. The engineers at Callaway went absolutely crazy when they found out that this was actually possible. In the past, we've seen the carbon fiber crown, the carbon fiber soul, and we've seen the carbon fiber face, but we've never seen an entire body, a 360 chassis out of carbon. There was always an aluminum frame or a titanium body that held it all together. So, it's a breakthrough in carbon technology and Callaway says, "It's carbon in the right place," which I really love.
Forged Titanium Face
Now that we have this super strong, super lightweight, featherlight chassis, we have to put a face on it. There's a lot of different ways that you can attack that problem. You can go with carbon technology, 60 layers across the face on the TaylorMade drivers, or you can go with the tried and true titanium face. Callaway went with a forged titanium face, which is going to produce some of the highest ball speeds that you're going to find in the industry. What they were able to do was also use their AI computer to design a face that optimizes performance and downrange dispersion. Throughout the face, there's actually different thicknesses in different places to help create the spin that's needed on your off-center hits to help straighten out that ball. Callaway has really perfected this over the years and honestly, they are about 10 years ahead of everybody else in terms of their AI technology.
Improved Jailbreak Technology
Behind the face is the jailbreak technology, which had an upgrade this year as well. The traditional jailbreak was two parallel bars behind the face, designed to connect the crown to the soul, which helps stabilize the face, and strengthen the whole body. This allows for you to thin out the face so it has a little bit more room to move, which creates higher ball speeds. They were able to redesign the jailbreak, again with some AI help, and turn it into more of a wishbone design, saving on weight and creating even more stability throughout the face. So, you get faster ball speeds, a more stable face, and your confidence just goes absolutely through the roof.
Sliding Weights
From there, they also added the sliding weight technology on the back. There's a 15g sliding weight, so if you tend to hit the ball to the right or the left, you're going to be able to move this weight down towards the heel, or up towards the toe to help dial in that perfect ball flight.
Optifit Shaft Adaptor
On top of that, you're also going to have Optifit technology in the shaft adaptor, where you're going to be able to play around with your loft and your face angles. You're going to be able to increase your loft by two degrees, one degree, or even decrease it by one degree. You're also going to have a fade, draw, or neutral setting on there to play around with. So, there's a lot of great ways to use all of this technology and dial it in and make the perfect golf club for you.
Summary
I'm going to leave you with this. My ball speeds with this driver, and again, I play the Triple Diamond, have increased by 10 mph, which translates to about a 15 yard gain in distance. This driver sounds amazing, it sounds like an absolute rocket ship coming off the face. It feels really good.
I hit my driver kind of high in the face (which is not what you're supposed to do!), but for me, I don't have enough time to learn two different swings, and I hit down on all of my shots and that's what works for me. So, I actually tee my ball down a little lower, and I can see the ball marks moving down towards the center of the face. Even on those high, out towards the toe shots, I'm still blasting it out there 290-300 yards. And then when I catch it in the dead middle of the sweet spot, I'm seeing 310-320 yard drives. Its super effortless, I'm not swinging very hard, I'm just getting that face back to the ball. This golf club is just outperforming any driver that I've ever played in my life. I can't say enough good things about it.
