The Curated Take

4.8/5

The Mizuno T22 wedge is ideal for mid to low-handicap golfers seeking a versatile, soft-feeling, high-spinning wedge. Its traditional, compact design instills confidence in full-swing shots, and its cleverly built sole ensures excellent turf interaction. The wedge provides remarkable spin control even in wet conditions. It has a distinctively soft feel and crisp sound upon impact. Mizuno's range of grind options tailors to various play styles, making it a value-for-money choice compared to other brands.

Ideal for
  • Great option for those who love a traditional wedge look with maximum spin, even in wet conditions
  • Great pick for those who want flexibility in different wedge grinds to optimize turf interaction
  • Ideal option for players who like to be creative around the green and hit a variety of shots
  • Excellent feel
Not ideal for
  • Smaller head/traditional shaping, so not a great option for those who need forgiveness
  • Sole is a bit wider, even in the lower bounce options, so it may not be preferred by those who want maximum versatility
  • Leading edges in higher lofts are more rounded and may not be the best option for firm conditions

Expert Reviews of the Mizuno T22 Satin Chrome Wedge

This wedge is great for someone looking for a soft-feeling wedge with a lot of spin. It is also very versatile, and the grinds on the bottom give golfers the ideal wedge. The higher bounces are great for people who dig, and the lower bounces are great for someone who is shallower.
The T22 wedge line from Mizuno is an all-around excellent wedge. These wedges range from 45-62° and come in four grind options (S, D, C, and X). The wedge has a very traditional shape with a small head and sets up very nicely behind the ball. I own this wedge in the 50S, 56D, and 60C options. I have played them for about a year and have been very impressed for several reasons. First, the soft feel makes delicate shots around the green a pleasure to play. The overall spin and spin retention, specifically in wet conditions, is one of the best I have seen and allows me to stop the ball on a dime from various lies and conditions. This wedge is geared towards the more advanced player, as the small head shape does not offer much forgiveness. It can execute any shot type, especially when I dial in the correct grind for my playing style. I have also noticed that the sole of the higher lofted wedges is a bit wider than some other brands, so it may not be optimal for those who want maximum versatility from their sand/lob wedges. Even in the lower bounce options, the rounded leading edge makes picking the ball clean off the turf in firm conditions a little tricky. Overall, this wedge is a great option for mid-low handicappers who enjoy traditional wedge shaping in a maximum spin package.

Review Ratings

Full Shots

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. This wedge is exceptional for those full wedge shots which are so important during a round of golf. I particularly love the wedge design of the gap wedge. The compact design transitions seamlessly from my pitching wedge and inspires confidence for full-swing shots. The sole designs are cleverly built to allow for great turf interaction so that the wedge is versatile, from full shots to around delicate green chips/pitches.

Spin

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. The T22 offers some of the best spin I have seen in any wedge package. The full-length shots have a ton of "zip" and permit phenomenal control within 100 yards. Again, the most impressive aspect is this wedge's amount of spin in wet conditions. I have not seen any drop-off in the spin characteristics playing in the early morning dew or on rainy days.

Feel

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. This wedge is a one-piece grain flow forged with copper. The T22 has a distinctly soft feel at impact but still provides much feedback in guiding those delicate shots around the green. I have found it to be better than the current Vokeys in the feel department and have no complaints.

Sound

5/5
gave 5 of 5 stars. Full-length shots provide a solid sound that cannot be mistaken. Even well-struck chips and pitches have a great muted, crisp sound, which is exactly what a wedge needs.

Greenside Spin

4/5
gave 4 of 5 stars. Any type of greenside shot requires some amount of spin control. Even in wet conditions, this wedge delivers high levels of spin, particularly on short chips and pitches. This high-level spin took some time to get used to, but now it is an integral part of my short game.

FAQs

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

My favorite moment was one of my first rounds with this wedge. I was playing in a tournament in a torrential downpour, and the T22 delivered on every level. I specifically remember hitting a 95-yard shot that stopped on a dime during the heavy rain. I instantly knew I had a winner in this wedge.

Why did you choose this product?

Before playing with the T22, I always played with Vokey wedges. I am very particular about the setup and appearance of wedges and the different grind options available for hitting various shots around the green. After testing the T22 and comparing it to other brands, including Vokey, Callaway, and Cleveland, I found that it excelled above the competitors in each of the qualities mentioned previously. The shaping is very minimalistic and traditional. It sets up beautifully behind the ball. I selected three different grind options for my wedges. I play a 50° in the S grind for more full shots, the 56° in the D grind for greenside versatility, and the 60° in the C grind, which allows me to hit any shot around the green. Overall, the club design, feel, and spin made this wedge a no-brainer and knocked the Vokeys out of my bag.

What is the value for the money versus other options?

This wedge retails for about $120 compared to the Vokey at $180. It also comes with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue shafts, an upgrade over the Vokey "wedge flex" options. No other options are available today that rival the quality and performance of this wedge, specifically at this price point.

What do you love about this product?

I personally love the traditional look and smaller profile of the wedge. The four grind options (the way the sole is shaped to interact with the turf) provide a ton of versatility in finding the ideal wedge for my game. The most impressive aspect of this wedge is the amount of spin it retains, specifically in wet conditions. Finally, the feel is second to none and is one of the number one attributes of Mizuno products.
