The Curated Take
4.8/5
The Chrome Soft X Triple Track golf ball is ideal for mid-to-low handicap golfers who prioritize control and workability. This golf ball offers a blend of distance, durability, and spin. The Triple Track alignment feature assists in better-putting accuracy. Its higher compression suits players with faster swing speeds, delivering increased distance off the tee. This durable ball is particularly effective around the greens due to its high spin. The ball feels soft and firm, providing tactile feedback without punishing mishits.

Expert Reviews of the Callaway 2022 Chrome Soft X Triple Track Yellow Golf Balls
Jonathan Belanger The Chrome Soft X Triple Track golf ball has lots of spin around the greens. The higher compression helps to get a little more distance off the tee for faster swing speeds, and the Triple Track alignment is excellent for aligning putts. My biggest gripe is the yellow version of these golf balls. With the alignment, these look closer to range balls than balls used on tour, and they're really hard to see during dawn or dusk. However, players can remedy the color issue by choosing the white version of this ball. The Chrome Soft X Triple Track is ideal for golfers looking for more distance off the tee and wanting more spin around the greens.
Slater Putland During the first round I used the Chrome Soft X Triple Track golf ball, I noticed a large change in almost every aspect of my game. The straighter ball flight made my drives and iron shots more consistent. I've used many different golf balls with similar compression, and the Chrome Soft X has been the biggest game-changer I've put in my bag. The Triple Track technology helps line up my putts to the fullest. It gives a complete visual that assists with making long putts look like tap-ins. I have yet to be able to shape the ball as much as other high spin balls on the market, but with the straight ball flight of the Chrome Soft X, I don't run into the trouble of having to shape nearly as many shots. The greenside and lowball flight are unmatched, making it seem like I'm shooting darts at the pin in the "drop and stop" effect.
Zack Caudill The Callaway Chrome Soft X Triple Track golf ball is ideal for the mid-to-low handicap golfer looking for a golf ball that offers excellent workability and control without sacrificing other aspects of the game (i.e., distance, durability). While this ball is soft like the name suggests, it still offers a firm, sturdy enough exterior to last multiple rounds. Distance off the tee box is excellent, especially for players not relying on the ball to generate most of the spin. Gaming the Chrome Soft X Triple Track in the yellow gives me a more confident swing and elevates my ball-striking ability. To my eyes, the yellow cover makes the ball feel like a larger target. The excellent visibility makes it a great choice for my links-style course in the hills of the "Bluegrass" state. The best feature of this ball has to be the Triple Track technology. One will reap the benefits of this alignment aid like I certainly have.

Alignment
5/5
Jonathan Belanger gave 5 of 5 stars. What I love about the Triple Track alignment on this golf ball is that it gives me three lines to line up a putt. In turn, this gives me a path to aim my ball down instead of a single line which helps ensure I’m aimed at the correct target line.
Zack Caudill gave 5 of 5 stars. The Triple Track system offers an outstanding visual aid for golfers who prefer to use the alignment line on their balls for putting. However, the three lines can be distracting while standing over putts.
Spin
5/5
Jonathan Belanger gave 5 of 5 stars. When using a ball that spins more, some people worry if they are sacrificing control. Off the tee, I don’t find that my fade/slice that shows up occasionally is punished more because of the ball. Hitting approach shots, I have plenty of confidence that a well-struck shot will stay on the green, and I can attack flags tucked away if I want.
Zack Caudill gave 5 of 5 stars. The Chrome Soft X offers a ton of spin and can be unforgiving for someone who tends to slice/hook their driver. Golfers who generate high spin numbers may want to look elsewhere.
Feel
4/5
Jonathan Belanger gave 4 of 5 stars. It feels great hitting putts, chips, and other shots on the course. I don't feel too punished when I blade a shot with my irons, but I get feedback on mishits I wouldn’t have received from a softer golf ball.
Zack Caudill gave 4 of 5 stars. This golf ball gives me the soft tackiness that most of us love in a golf ball but also offers a firm feel off the clubface. It's workable around the greens but firm enough off the tee box to generate outstanding distance.
Durability
5/5
Jonathan Belanger gave 5 of 5 stars. This golf ball is durable and normal shots don't scratch it. Bunker shots don’t scratch the surface unless it’s tough sand; even then, it’s minimal.
Zack Caudill gave 4 of 5 stars. If I keep them off the cart paths and the bark, I can easily get a few rounds out of this ball. The cover has held up fairly well from multiple wedge shots and a few bunker shots. Very slight "scuffs" from bunker testing, but again, overall a very durable golf ball. Unfortunately, the Chrome Soft X doesn't float or come with a GPS tracker.
Distance
5/5
Zack Caudill gave 5 of 5 stars. I've tested many golf balls during the 2023 season, and so far, the Chrome Soft X stands out above the rest as far as total distance. While way less forgiving than my everyday ball, when struck well, this ball is one of the longest on the shelf. With good contact, I consistently see an increase of 15 yards from the tee box and off my long irons. My shot dispersion isn't as tight with the Chrome Soft X, but the distance is outstanding.
Greenside Spin
5/5
Jonathan Belanger gave 5 of 5 stars. The Chrome Soft X creates plenty of spin to hit any shot I can dream of around the greens, whether it’s hitting the high flop shot that lands two feet from the hole or the low spinner that takes one hop past the flag and returns to a couple of feet.
Zack Caudill gave 4 of 5 stars. The Chrome Soft X does not check and reverse for me as some of its peers do. The shot results from a greenside spin scenario offer much more "slam the brakes" with minimal rollout rather than the "check and spin back" that softer tour-level balls are known for.
FAQs
What was your favorite moment with this gear?
Jonathan Belanger My favorite moment with this ball was a tee shot on a par 3 where I bladed my shot and hoped that my ball would not go into the woods behind the green. Surprisingly, it did not go into the woods, but it dug its teeth, stopped on the green's edge, and saved at least two strokes on my round.
Zack Caudill Especially inside 20 feet around the green, the high spin rate and firmness of the Callaway Chrome Soft X golf ball translate to a "drop, hop, and stop" outcome to my wedge shots rather than the backpedaling I am accustomed to, accounting for the small hop toward the hole rather than controlling the backspin I usually generate made aiming for green much more successful. During my last round of testing, I was able to go back-to-back hole-outs for birdie and then to save par. It's hard to argue with those results.
Why did you choose this product?
Zack Caudill After gaming the Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls for a few rounds, I knew I had to try the Chrome Soft X. While my experience with the Chrome Soft was outstanding, I wanted a few more yards off the tee and a firmer feeling ball that would mesh well with my swing speed. Just as I'd hoped, the "X" delivered much longer results from my driver and my long irons. Regarding my experience on the green, I'm currently gaming (for sentimental reasons) a 1980s blade-style putter with a pistol grip. The Chrome Soft X offers the right firmness to give me the feedback I need for such a setup.
What is the value for the money versus other options?
Zack Caudill The MSRP for this golf ball comes in at around $50. Suppose I base the Titleist Pro V1 (estimated $55 MSRP) as the gold standard in golf balls. In that case, the Callaway Chrome Soft X is priced appropriately. A proven tour-level golf ball deserves a tour-level price. For me, that means a tag north of $45. Some golf balls outperform their sticker price, and some are a tremendous disappointment.
What do you love about this product?
Jonathan Belanger I enjoy the Triple Track alignment for putting and how much spin this ball provides on approach shots and chipping around the green.
Zack Caudill The Chrome Soft X offers a firm feel, increased distance, and higher spin rate off the putter, irons, and woods than its two counterparts (Soft and Soft Low Spin). The firmness and feedback off the putter face is an excellent change of pace from some of the soft golf balls that sometimes feel like I hit nothing. I consistently experience an increase of 10 to 15 yards off my long and mid irons during multiple rounds of testing. When my swing speed and club path are on the right track, the distance off the tee box is also a noticeable upgrade. Golf is a mental game, and the combination of the Triple Track system and hi-res (high resolution, visibility) yellow cover boosts confidence both on the green and with my ball striking consistency. Maybe it's just between my ears, but I think my game is better with a hi-res ball.
