The Curated Take

5.0/5

The Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Coffee Maker is ideal for coffee enthusiasts, particularly those who appreciate consistent flavor across varied brew quantities, from a single cup to a full 12-cup pot. It features impressive programmability, allowing users to customize brew settings to their desired flavor profiles. The machine's insulated metal carafe keeps coffee warm for hours without a hot plate, preventing the coffee from burning. Additionally, the inclusion of a reusable mesh filter promotes enhanced flavor. Although users should be cautious of the filter basket, which may leak if removed prematurely, this brewer offers excellent value.

Ideal for
  • Consistent flavor and brew quality between single-cup brews up to a full 12-cup pot
  • Programmability is great, and it is easy to set custom brew settings for the desired flavor
  • Carafe is insulated and keeps the coffee warm for hours—a great alternative to a hot plate as the coffee does not burn
Not ideal for
  • Filter basket can leak if removed before it's fully drained

Expert Reviews of the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Coffee Maker

Aysia M This Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Coffee Maker has been a game changer for me and my partner. We were both baristas for a few years and learned many nuances about coffee tasting, third-wave coffee qualities, and the best ways to replicate the coffee shop experience at home. We have been through a few coffee makers in the last three years; this one is the best we've had. It's user-friendly, consistent in how it brews, and easy to program custom brew settings for different kinds of coffee if that's what someone wants. Two big selling points for me are that it comes with a reusable mesh filter and does not have a hot plate. The reusable mesh filter basket helps cut down on waste and time while keeping the coffee's true flavor. The lack of a hot plate is great and, honestly, more difficult to find in coffee machines than I expected. Hot plates burn coffee after 30 minutes and continue burning more as one lets it sit. The metal carafe the Breville Thermal coffee maker comes with does a great job of keeping coffee warm for a few hours. My only con is that moving my mug or carafe before the filter basket has fully drained will leak a little bit, but not more than a teaspoon. All-in-all, I'm thoroughly impressed with this machine and recommend it to anyone.

Review Ratings

Filtration

5/5
Aysia M gave 5 of 5 stars. I use filtered water from my fridge in addition to the reservoir filter that comes with this machine. I've seen the damage that mineral and calcium build-up causes on espresso and coffee machines, and I do my best to avoid it. Other people may need to invest in a good water filter for their machines, particularly in an area with hard water.

Ease of Cleaning

5/5
Aysia M gave 5 of 5 stars. I have only descaled this brewer once; it was a simple process. Otherwise, daily cleaning is easy to do. I empty the mesh filter basket and rinse both parts. I rinse out the carafe every day, but I deep clean the carafe to remove the coffee build-up once every six months.

Capacity

5/5
Aysia M gave 5 of 5 stars. The reservoir can hold a maximum capacity of 12 cups of water, which is more than enough. I make between 3-7 cups daily, depending on whether my partner is having coffee with me. The carafe can hold all 12 cups without issue. There is more than enough capacity.

Programmability

5/5
Aysia M gave 5 of 5 stars. I was a barista for a long time and am very particular about my coffee. I was very impressed when I learned I could set the bloom time and length of extraction for my desired flavor profiles. It comes with some pre-set options, but I only use the ones I select. I can make the ideal cup of coffee for any coffee blend roast or blend.

Brew Strength Control

5/5
Aysia M gave 5 of 5 stars. It comes with some pre-set options, but I use the ones I programmed into the brewer. As noted, I can make the ideal cup of coffee for any coffee blend roast or blend. The basic pre-set options make a good cup of coffee, but my preferences are a little different than the average coffee drinker, and I'm ecstatic that I can make coffee that makes me happy.

FAQs

What do you love about this product?

Aysia M I love the ease of use, the fact that it comes with a reusable mesh filter basket and metal carafe, and it does not have a hot plate. Hot plates burn coffee and turn the flavor rancid when left for longer than 30 minutes. The metal carafe was a selling point for me. It is dual-walled, so the coffee is insulated and stays warm for a couple of hours. Programming this machine to my specific flavor profiles is easy. I use this every day, and I love it.

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Aysia M My favorite moment was when I learned I could program how it brews. I can set the bloom time for different types of coffee, adjust the brew time for extraction, and cater how many cups I need down to a single serving. I can make the ideal cup of coffee for my desired flavor for blonde, medium, and dark roasts.

Why did you choose this product?

Aysia M I chose this product because it does not have a hot plate and comes with a metal carafe. This combo is difficult to find in home coffee machines, which sold me immediately.
