One of the most hallowed adages for golfers is “Drive for show, putt for dough.” Recent analytical studies have shown the game might not be so simple, however. PGA Tour stars like Rory McIlroy show there are advantages to hitting the ball as far as possible, particularly if you still end up in the fairway. Shorter clubs on approach shots mean you have a better chance to hit the green or even close to the hole, which lowers scores and puts less pressure on your chipping. Besides, is there anything in golf more fun than standing on a tee box with your playing partners and uncorking a ball 20 yards past them?

If you haven’t changed your driver in even just a few years, you could be missing out on some serious developments in driver technology, be it new face shapes to lessen mishits or increased adjustability to find the perfect fit. The pros aren’t the perfect measuring stick to hold yourself against, but even on the PGA Tour, the average driving distance has increased 12.6 yards in the last decade. It’s even gone up 5.9 yards since the 2019 season! That’s more than half a club if your driver is even just four years old, and most of that can be attributed to more advanced technology seen today.

What if I Don’t Need Any Extra Distance?

First of all, if you ask the above question, I applaud your restraint and ability to analyze your golf game. You have a wisdom I myself can rarely replicate.

More importantly, there’s more to a new driver than just hitting it a few yards longer. Golf equipment companies have made strides in forgiveness, or how far off-line your bad swings go left or right, and spin reduction as well, such as Taylormade’s Twist Face technology. Modern drivers also offer an unprecedented level of adjustability, letting you tinker with the loft, lie angle, and face rotation until you find the setting perfect for you. These small measurements change the position of the clubface ever so slightly, letting you swing your swing and still hit the ball square rather than trying to spend hours changing your instincts on the range. Some of the models on this list were built to help get the ball higher in the air, or to keep it lower, or to increase spin, or to lower it. If there are any aspects of your first swings you feel dissatisfied with, there’s a driver out there waiting to help you with the problem.

If you’re looking for a little more length off the tee boxes, or if you just want a change at the top of the bag and a little more confidence in your big stick, here are the best golf drivers on the market in 2023.

1. Titleist TSR2

Titleist came out with four editions of their TSR drivers, numbered 1-4, and each serves different purposes and appeals to different golfers. The TSR1 is lightweight and meant to generate ball speed with a slower swing speed. The TSR3 is for players who reliably find the sweet spot, offering heightened rewards for consistency and pure contact. The TSR4 is for players who already generate tons of clubhead speed but want low spin. I listed the TSR2 here because it’s the most forgiving driver of the bunch, the one I felt offers the most appeal to most golfers. The TSR2 is designed with stability in mind, as the face design saves balls toward the toe or the heel from turning into a disaster. Each TSR model is top of the line, however. Titleist’s adjustments to the sole weight (the little circle you see on the back) and a smaller hosel opening make the clubhead slimmer and let it pass through the air more easily, creating the ultimate aerodynamic machine. Each new model produces crazy clubhead speed, a higher ball flight, and added distance.

2. Taylormade Stealth 2

With the red club face and the patented Twist Face carbon technology, the Stealth is quickly becoming one of the most iconic looks and brands in the sport. The Twist Face accuracy works as advertised, as this driver stays between the penalty stakes and maintains plenty of distance even on mishits. There’s even an extra rear weight to offer a high MOI (moment of inertia), which makes the club more resistant to the twisting that creates foul balls. Taylormade built these drivers to turn slices that go way right and hooks that fly way left into smaller fades and draws that can turn without leaving the fairway. The full carbon body feels solid in your hands but is incredibly lightweight, enough to generate some extra speed. There’s even an extra rear weight to offer a high MOI, which makes the club more resistant to the twisting that creates mishits. Our Curated Experts say the sound of a carbon driver might not initially sound like music to your ears since the different material does not produce the same hearty sound you might be used to on perfect drives, but they said they adjusted to the new sound quickly.

3. Callaway Paradym

The Callaway Paradym drivers all feature thin titanium faces, and the “jailbreak” technology, which consists of two metal rods behind the clubface, is meant to create a faster rebound speed from the face back into the ball, which creates ball speed. The results are pretty undeniable. The most uniform model, the Paradym, offers increased forgiveness and less spin. The Callaway Paradym X is the slice-fixer for players who lose it right often or want a higher launch. The Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond is the longest of the three models, meant for players who hit the sweet spot often (like the TSR3). Our Curated Expert community says the standard Paradym model is not as long as the Triple Diamond or the best for the low handicap golfer, and the models are not the most workable on the market if you’re looking to shape all shot shapes. But the Paradym offers an unprecedented combination of distance and forgiveness. The adjustment tools look a little different from the rest of its competitors as well, with the sliding swing weight at the back of the head meant to help shape shots in a certain direction. Our Experts also praised the club’s appearance, saying the sleek look will provide more confidence as you stand over the ball.

4. Cobra Aerojet

Cobra’s newest model might not be in Bryson DeChambeau’s bag anymore, but that doesn’t mean it can’t maximize distance. The company’s newest driver was shaped to be aerodynamic, and a forged face insert produces a high launch and a faster ball speed. The carbon fiber in the crown and sole is meant to keep the club lightweight while also feeling durable and steady in your grip. As it’s becoming more and more popular in the market, the Aerojet is adjustable as well, with club loft, lie angle, and face angle all fair game to be tinkered with. Cobra has always had a unique head shape, so if that throws you off, there’s no reason to buy a driver you don’t feel confident standing over. But unless that’s an absolute dealbreaker, there’s no reason to not give this model a try, because the combination of speed and forgiveness rivals any model on the market.

5. Srixon ZX7 Mk II

One of the most forgiving options on the market, the Srixon model’s flatter shape and higher skirt design provide an extra barrier to keep your drives in the fairway. Our Experts raved about this driver’s accuracy and said the sound and the feel of the club offered an extra surge of inspiration. Just because it’s accurate doesn’t mean it isn’t long, however. Our same Expert reviews cited an extra 15 to 20 yards of distance on their drives. The Dual Flex Zone technology in the face decreases energy dispersed across the face at impact and keeps it directed on the ball, adding speed and distance. While this may not have the same level of adjustability as the TSRs, the swing weight at the back of the head allows you to tinker with loft, lie angle, and face angle to find the perfect fit. All in all, reviews for the Srixon model are incredibly positive.

6. Mizuno ST-Z 230

Another forgiveness-heavy model, the Mizuno ST-Z 230 routinely provides a higher ball flight than average and reliably keeps your ball out of the trees. The Mizuno doesn’t have a titanium face, but rather a forged SAT 2041 Beta Ti Face meant to offer some extra resilience and durability. It doesn’t offer a litany of adjustments, but there are four settings you can switch between on the hosel. Our Experts say this isn’t the best model for workability and shot shaping on the market, and it won’t help those looking to reduce spin, but the high launch combined with the forgiveness make a wonderful combination. Reliably long and reliably straight is a pretty great sales pitch, after all. Mizuno’s always had the color scheme down, and visually, the blue accents add an excellent touch and provide a sleek, confidence-inducing look.
