Brand Claims

What does Mizuno claim about this club? Mizuno claims that these are going to promote a draw bias ball flight with the offset on the head, slightly larger footprint, and it’s going to help launch the ball real easy for you. A great, easy club to swing.

Overall Impressions

What are the specs of the club you are testing? The club I'm testing is the Mizuno ST-X 220 4U hybrid in 20 degrees. I have the Aldila ASCENT, 50-degree stiff-leg shaft on the STX. The available lofts with the Mizuno ST-X 220 hybrid comes in 20 degrees, 23 degrees and 26 degrees.

What is your overall impression of the club? My first impressions of the Mizuno hybrid is that it was very easy to launch, and I also had a very easy time getting this ball to move to the left with that draw bias. It also had a very pleasing sound, and the feel and impact was very soft, and I think a lot of players are going to really enjoy that.

Review

How is it for distance and ball speed? The Mizuno ST-X 220 implements their thinnest face on a hybrid in their line of clubs. What this is going to do is increase ball speed and really help maximize distances that you're going to see with your hybrid.

What do you find unique about its appearance? How is its forgiveness? What I really liked visually about the Mizuno ST-X hybrid is it has a slightly larger footprint than its counterpart, the ST-C. I think that helps with a little bit more forgiveness, a little bit easier of a launch.

How is its launch? Does this club swing light or heavy to you? On the ball flight, I really loved how easy it was to get the ball in the air. It felt seamless getting it up, and launching was great. The 50-gram ASCENT shaft really had a nice swing weight feel and really helped promote that higher-launching ball flight.

What may make a player shy away from it? Some better players may shy away from the Mizuno ST-X 220 based on the draw-biased nature in the high launch that it has.

How would you describe the sound of this club and feel at impact? The sound and feel and impact were very appealing to me. It's a very soft feel that you get off the clubface, and you also get a very pleasing sound. Not too tangy, not too muted.

Is the club adjustable? The Mizuno ST-X hybrid does not come with an adjustable hosel, so you would be fixed into the higher ball flight and draw-biased nature of the ST-X head.

Are there any drawbacks to this club? The drawbacks that I could think of for this club would really be the added offset. A lot of players who are already hitting the ball a bit left or don't have any issues working the ball may not enjoy the draw-biased nature of the strikes.

Anything related to climate, terrain, grass, location, weather conditions that would have any impact on this club’s performance? I think the Mizuno ST-X hybrid would work great in any terrains, any turf conditions, and any climates, as this is a very versatile and great launching hybrid.

Recommendations

Who would you recommend this club to? I would highly recommend the Mizuno ST-X 220 hybrid for anyone who has a bit of an issue launching the ball either with their long irons or with their hybrid clubs. Also, for someone who maybe fights a slice or oftentimes hits their hybrid off to the right, the draw-biased nature with the added offset is really going to help you hit straighter shots and get more distance out of your hybrid.

Who should avoid this club, and what type of club would be a better option for that player? I would say that better players, players who have a higher launch angle with their hybrid, as well as anyone who likes to work the ball in both directions, may not be a great fit for the Mizuno ST-X and would end up fitting better into the Mizuno ST-Z option, as it has much more workability off of that clubface and a smaller, compact shape that really helps work that ball in both directions.

Golf clubs work differently for different types of golfers.
