Expert Reviews of the Smith 4d MAG Goggles
Brennan P The Smith 4d MAG Goggles are some of my favorite goggles. I have used them for two seasons with no issues. The magnetic lenses allow for quick changes in changing conditions. Smith has a variety of compatible lenses, so one can choose which ones are right for their needs. The strap disconnects in the back via a small clip, allowing for easy on and off when my helmet is on. I also like that they fit seamlessly with my Smith helmet. The field of view is great. I never feel like I have blind spots on the mountain. I haven’t had any issues with these goggles fogging up on me. Overall, I recommend these goggles if one's budget is high; however, there are cheaper options on the market.

Review Ratings
Comfort
5/5
Brennan P gave 5 of 5 stars. These goggles are comfortable enough to wear all day on the mountain. The foam around the frame of the goggles is nice and soft. The strap can be adjusted to fit any size head/helmet. Pair these with a Smith-branded helmet and one will have a helmet and goggles that line up perfectly. Forget about the days of the goggle gap.
Field of View
5/5
Brennan P gave 5 of 5 stars. Smith introduced a new lens shape with these goggles. The curvature on the bottom of the lens allows the wearer to have a claimed 25% greater field of view. While the field of view isn't dramatically larger than most other styles, the extra field of view range is nice to have. No one has ever said they wish they had less field of view while on the mountain.
Anti Fog
4/5
Brennan P gave 4 of 5 stars. The anti-fog on these goggles is as good as any other I have tried. After sweaty, hot laps down the mountain, I have never gotten back to the lift and had these goggles fog up. The only time the lenses on these goggles fogged up was during the pandemic when masks were required in lift lines. I attribute that fogging simply to the mask requirements, not an actual issue with the anti-fog on the lens.
Durability
4/5
Brennan P gave 4 of 5 stars. These goggles have held up great through two solid seasons. Besides the unavoidable small scratches from skiing in the trees, I haven't noticed any real durability issues. One small part of the goggle strap has gotten a little wavy on me, but nothing hinders the goggle performance. I checked with Smith about this, and they told me I could get a replacement pair if I wanted to go through the warranty process.
Ventilation
4/5
Brennan P gave 4 of 5 stars. I enjoy skiing fast and aggressively. Sometimes, with other goggles, I have noticed that sometimes, at high speeds, there is too much airflow into the goggles, and my eyes can get dried out from time to time. I think the 4d MAG goggles have an ideal blend of having enough ventilation to minimize fog and face sweat, but not so much that my eyes get dried out from the airflow.
Quality
4/5
Brennan P gave 4 of 5 stars. I think that the 4d MAG goggles are an excellent choice for any skier. The lenses are of great quality and make colors pop. The extra field of view allows me to see more when I'm on the mountain. The magnetic lenses are great for swapping when the conditions change on me mid-day. There isn't much tech that goes into goggles straps so mostly the lens is what is most important here.
FAQs
What do you love about this product?
Brennan P The Smith 4d MAG goggles are some of the best on the market. I really like that the lenses swap out very easily with little to no effort. Additionally, the mechanism to lock the lenses in place is very secure, and there shouldn't be any issues with the lenses popping off accidentally. I also really like that there are so many different lens options for these—everything from low light to pure sun, along with photochromatic options that change with the conditions. The small curve at the bottom of the lens allows for a better field of view while out on the mountain compared to other options.
What was your favorite moment with this gear?
Brennan P One of my best moments with these goggles was an epic day at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, with 24 inches of snow at the top of the mountain waiting to be skied. There were many face shots on the way down, and the Smith 4D MAG goggles performed great.
Why did you choose this product?
Brennan P In a world of many goggle options, it is hard to choose just one. When looking for goggles, I knew I wanted magnetic lenses for quick swapping ability. I also knew I wanted something high-end with a good warranty. For these reasons, I opted for the Smith 4d MAGs. These goggles have quality magnetic lens options and a lifetime warranty that Smith will honor with little to no questions asked. While they are on the expensive end of the spectrum, I think they are worth the price.
What is the value for the money versus other options?
Brennan P These goggles are not for someone looking to save a few dollars. The question is, are they worth the price tag? People might be on the fence about this one. There is great value for the money with these goggles. The fact that they have a lifetime warranty is a big reason why these goggles are worth it. One might think, "But other Smith goggles also have the same warranty but aren't as expensive." They would be right in that assumption. I think the differentiating factor with these goggles is the extra field of view one has with the curved bottom lens. It can be argued that this is somewhat of a gimmicky feature; however, that little bit of extra vision when looking down is nice. If someone is solely looking for a magnetic lens but doesn't particularly care about the lens curvature on the 4d MAGs, there are less expensive options.
