Tl;dr: When it comes to Cobra drivers, it’s important to consider your skill level, budget, swing characteristics, and preferred ball flight. Cobra offers models from Radspeed to LTDx, and more recently, Aerojet, which all feature technology to provide fast ball speeds and overall great stability.

Over the past few years, Cobra drivers have become a perennial top choice, competing against the big brands and delivering high quality at a competitive price point. The 2021 Radspeed models were very well received, while the 2022 LTDx driver models (Cobra LTDx, LTDx Max, and LTDx LS) were all top performers. If you’re looking for a newer driver, you must try the 2023 Cobra Aerojet models, which I consider to be among the best range of drivers Cobra has ever made. I’m not alone in this point of view, as nearly all online reviews of the Aerojet line have been very positive, like this one.

I’ve been an avid golfer for over 25 years and have had my own golf sports radio talk show and Blog called Chip Shots. I’ve always had a keen interest in golf equipment, technology, and the golf club fitting process. This past year, I’ve enjoyed helping others find their ideal golf equipment as a Golf Expert for Curated.com. And finally, I’ve gamed Cobra drivers for the past five years. I started with the F8 and am currently using the Radspeed XB, and I recently got to try out a few of the 2023 Aerojet models.

Who is Cobra?

A subsidiary of Puma, Cobra Golf is located in Carlsbad, California, and was founded in 1972. The company offers a full lineup of golf equipment, is known for innovation, and provides quality clubs at a very competitive price.

What to Consider When Buying Cobra Drivers

1. What is your skill level?

If you are a beginner, you might want to focus on a driver that provides high forgiveness, or perhaps help straighten out a slice. For players who are more experienced or have a faster swing speed, lower spin and greater workability would be areas to keep in mind.

2. What is your budget?

New clubs can be expensive, and drivers are typically the most expensive single club out of all the ones in your bag. Obviously, the newer models will cost more, but you can get more customized features and the latest technology. Equipment that is a few years old will be more affordable and will still offer great quality and good value. Cobra drivers from Radspeed to the latest version will range from $200 to nearly $600.

3. What are your swing characteristics?

Picking the proper shaft and head type is important, so understanding your swing characteristics will certainly help determine shaft weight and flex, as well as the style of driver head. Things like swing speed, tempo, path, and attack angle are all things to consider as you search for that perfect shaft/head combination from your Cobra driver.

4. What is your preferred ball flight?

Do you like to hit towering low spin drives? Or maybe you like a lower trajectory to maximize roll and keep the ball under the wind. When you tee up, are you aiming a bit right and planning on a draw, or aiming left side, knowing you will get that cut shot back into the fairway? Again, shafts and the head model will be important, as will loft.

Different Types of Cobra Drivers

1. Radspeed

Flashy good looks combine with technology like the CNC Milled Infinity Face and T-Bar Speed Chasis to make the Radspeed driver line a solid choice for a great price.

Benefits:

  • Technology like the CNC Milled Infinity Face, T-Bar Speed Chasis, Radial Weighting, Thin-Ply Carbon Wrap Crown
  • Different head designs to fit different players’ needs (standard, XB and XD)

Be Aware:

  • The tech and design is a few years old, so may not perform quite as well as the latest models

2. LTDx

A more traditional looking driver, the LTDx driver provides PWR-COR Technology that achieves zero CG and 5200 MOI for the first time, which means incredible launch conditions and forgiveness.

Benefits:

  • Technology updates like PWR-COR and H.O.T. Face Design provide superior launch conditions and faster ball speeds across the face
  • Different head designs to fit different players’ needs (LTDx, LTDx LS, LTDx Max)

Be Aware:

  • It’s important to make sure you pick the right head for your game

3. Aerojet

Aerojet Drivers are loaded with technology that provides forgiveness, ball speed, and optimal spin conditions at a competitive price point compared with the models from the major competitors. These drivers feature a raised skirt, symmetrical shaping, and streamlined edges to generate the most speed possible. Yet, they maintain a high level of forgiveness.

Benefits:

  • The latest in tech. Innovation featuring PWRSHELL L-cup, H.O.T. Face created by AI PWR-BRIDGE on the bottom of the club behind the face
  • Great sound and feel
  • Forgiveness across the face translates to consistent ball speeds
  • Different head designs to fit different players’ needs (Aerojet, Aerojet LS, Aerojet Max)

Be Aware:

  • If you have a LTDx model, the gains may not be worth the extra cost. If you have a Radspeed, however, it is a definite improvement

Features to Look for When Buying a Cobra Driver

Here are some general elements to keep in mind:

  • Shaft Flex: Senior, regular, stiff, and extra stiff
  • Shaft Length: Depending on your height and arm length, the standard driver length may need to be altered
  • Loft: 9 and 10.5 degree heads are most common
  • Grip size and style: There are a multitude of companies, styles, sizes, and materials from which to choose
  • Head design: A variety of driver head designs accommodate the need for spin, launch, forgiveness, speed, and workability

How to Choose the Right Cobra Driver for You

Below are three different personas and the types of Cobra drivers they should consider.

Stan:

Stan is a senior high handicap golfer. With a diminished swing speed and an out-to-in swing path that results in push fades and slices, Stan is looking for a driver to get the ball in the air and help with the slice shot shape.

Features Stan should look for:

  • A lighter shaft in a senior flex will be Stan’s best option
  • A higher loft (10.5 or even 12 degrees) and driver with a draw bias will provide additional help

Cobra driver examples: Radspeed XD, LTDx Max, Aerojet Max

Bill:

Bill has a driver swing that averages 90 - 95 MPH and is in need of a straight-hitting, forgiving driver.

Features Bill should look for:

  • The drivers with neutral heads and high MOI for stability
  • Bill would be best fit into a regular shaft that weighs high 50 or low 60 grams.

Cobra driver examples: Radspeed XB, LTDx, Aerojet

Steve:

Steve is a scratch golfer with a 115 mph swing speed looking for a driver that provides maximum distance and workability.

Features Steve should look for:

  • He will most likely benefit from a low-spinning head
  • Steve will be looking for an extra stiff driver flex in the high 60 or even low 70 grams
