The Curated Take

4.2/5

The Cobra Aerojet Max Driver is an excellent choice for golfers seeking a light, fast-swinging driver with exceptional forgiveness on toe-end mishits. Designed with aerodynamics in mind, this driver offers increased speed and carry distance, making it highly efficient for straight, long shots. However, it lacks precise feedback on mishits, which could be a drawback for players looking to refine their technique. Visually, its unique sapphire blue and white color scheme sets it apart from typical driver designs. This driver is ideal for golfers who prioritize distance and workability and don't mind a loud impact sound.

Ideal for
  • Light, fast swinging
  • Big noise at impact
  • More forgiving of toe end than heel side mishits
Not ideal for

Expert Reviews of the Cobra Aerojet Max Driver

Calvin Max It took me just a few swings with the Aerojet to know that Cobra has an absolute and instant classic on their hands. The name, Aerojet, is an homage to the design principle it employs to increase speed: aerodynamics. By stripping away drag from the club, what is left is a sleeker, faster-moving golf club. Or so they said. Honestly, the whole thing seemed gimmicky when I looked over the marketing information for the first time. But it's no gimmick. I can hear the difference when I swing. The sound at impact may be loud enough to draw attention from a few holes over. But the actual swing is so incredibly muted compared to a TaylorMade offering that I found the disparity between quiet swing and loud hit alarming initially, but it quickly grew on me. Furthermore, the numbers bore out what I felt. I picked up a slight speed increase right off the bat but nearly six yards of additional carry on average. Distance is not necessarily something I want to add, but I will take it and run if Cobra wants to hand me an extra five yards for free. Something should also be said for the looks. Cobra chose to style this in a brighter color scheme with a sapphire blue and white. It is pleasing to the eye and a refreshing change from the dark, typically red clubs that have dominated the driver market for years.

Review Ratings

Feel

4/5
Calvin Max gave 4 of 5 stars. I love the way this driver feels when I catch them well, even mediocre, really. And to be fair, I love it still when I don’t hit them well. But there’s virtually no feedback, and I fear it might hold me back from diagnosing issues as they arise during my rounds.

Workability

3/5
Calvin Max gave 3 of 5 stars. I have lost many thousands of balls in my life, perhaps tens of thousands. But with this driver if I lose a ball, I know it is my fault. The price of workability in this case is dead straight, frozen rope accuracy. If I could change one thing about this driver I would have named it the corner cutter instead of the Aerojet.

Distance

5/5
Calvin Max gave 5 of 5 stars. The recipe for distance is sort of disastrous: flatten out a trajectory, and the ball will carry further. But somehow Cobra cracked the code here with the higher, longer concept. The ball just rockets up to its peak but then just stays there for an almost uncomfortable amount of time. It definitely took me some getting used to. For half a second on my first few drives, I wondered if it was going to come back down.

Sound

5/5
Calvin Max gave 5 of 5 stars. I was really impressed with the noise of this driver as time went on. At first, it was alien and a far cry from my usual ping, but after a couple of rounds my ear settled in, and I came to enjoy it greatly. It’s almost muted at the top end of the sound range, notable without being too much.

Forgiveness

4/5
Calvin Max gave 4 of 5 stars. I found it extremely difficult to flight this driver, probably because that’s not what it’s intended to be used for and I am the only person I know who really tries to do that … but I have to have something to complain about. Otherwise, this driver really is perfect. It’s not a magic face that keeps it straight, it’s simply perfectly weighted and stays really square through the impact zone. I was most impressed with the regularity provided in my spin numbers. I typically catch one with an open face once or twice every ten drives. Not here. I cannot say enough about the weighting. It was hard for me to do anything other than keep the face straight.

FAQs

What do you love about this product?

Calvin Max There are a lot of things I love about the performance of this driver, but the thing I like the most is the way it looks in my bag. It seems drivers across most manufacturers have decided that the only color a driver can be is sports car black, and this is such a wonderful exception with its flashes of white and blue.

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Calvin Max The first balls I hit with any new driver are always weird. But something strange happened when I hit this club. I have provided a transcript below of my thoughts after each of my first three balls. Ball 1: “Oh, okay, that felt fine, man that ball went really high.” Ball 2: “Wow, that went really really high again. Am I ballooning these? No, that still hasn’t come down.” Ball 3: “Okay, so that’s just what this thing does.”

Why did you choose this product?

Calvin Max I have to be totally honest here: I was going to buy this club from the moment I saw it in the store. I hope that I’m honest in saying its incredible performance is what made me actually take it home, but the sapphire blue weights had me from across the room.

What is the value for the money versus other options?

Calvin Max The Aerojet is comparably and fairly priced as a premium driver. Ultimately driver choices come down to performance and aesthetic choice. I care mostly about premium performance and do not mind paying for it.
