The Curated Take

4.0/5

The TaylorMade Spider GT silver single bend putter is an excellent choice for golfers who appreciate a well-balanced and stable putter. It excels in maintaining a straight line throughout the stroke and offers exceptional stability. Its most notable strengths are its ease of alignment and balance, making it intuitive and reliable for consistent putting. Although it may lack a bit in feel and forgiveness on breaking putts, its overall performance and compact design are highly valued. This putter is ideal for golfers looking for a mallet-style putter with a compact feel, offering a significant improvement in putting accuracy and control.

Expert Reviews of the TaylorMade Spider GT Silver Single Bend Putter

Calvin Max Everyone I know with a Spider GT would really like to have a Scotty Cameron, but they just can't bring themselves to part with TaylorMade's pride and joy. I have heard that refrain so many times in so many different wordings that it became the sole and only reason I walked into a store to test one for myself. I am afraid that, similar to an actual spider, if I were to put this putter into my bag, it may take an exterminator and fumigation to get it out fully. The quality is different than other putters in that it seems to be put together like a sports car. Whereas others are solid metal, clearly finished, and embellished with styling, this hints at something more, something mysterious with high horsepower. If I were told that it wasn't necessarily made of metal but instead has a hollow core concealing a series of gravity-generating stability gyroscopes, I would believe it, because it looks like there is more going on under the hood.

Review Ratings

Alignment

5/5
Calvin Max gave 5 of 5 stars. It’s difficult to put into words just how easy this putter is to both get and keep on line. There are certain things I expect a mallet to be good at, alignment being one of them, but I wouldn’t expect a custom putter from a tour van to be as intuitive as this putter is. If I can see the line to the hole, this putter will find its way there.

Grip

3/5
Calvin Max gave 3 of 5 stars. It seems as SuperStroke’s oversized grips have taken the market by storm they have become accepted as the standard for new putters. While I lament this development I will concede that it works well on this mallet. I personally went with the smallest oversized grip available, but there are both larger ones and far smaller pistol-style grips available.

Forgiveness

4/5
Calvin Max gave 4 of 5 stars. I felt like there was something a little off with this putter because it just goes so straight. Which, almost all the time, is no problem, but when I need a breaker to go in, or there’s a putt that is going to slide several feet of break, this putter and I can struggle.

Feel

3/5
Calvin Max gave 3 of 5 stars. There’s a clear responsiveness to the hit, so I can tell I struck a ball. But that’s all I can say for this flat stick. While there’s nothing wrong with the feel, there is absolutely no real feedback on the face and what is there is sort of dead feeling.

Balance

5/5
Calvin Max gave 5 of 5 stars. Feels great in the hand, but to me the mark of a well-balanced putter is how well it mirrors a player's stroke through the impact, and the Spider offers what I am looking for in spades. Very easy to get moving on the correct line and very intuitive to keep the face square.

FAQs

What do you love about this product?

Calvin Max The Taylormade Spider GT has a compact feel that I fell for immediately. My putter stroke is greatly improved with a mallet putter, but I find them unwieldy, often cumbersome, and distracting. Nothing of the sort here with the GT. It is every bit a mallet, with a much more compact feel than usual.

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Calvin Max My favorite moment with the Spider GT Silver was my very first putt. I took it back and as I let it fly, rediscovering my love of putting. It is very intuitive to aim. I feel like a kid again.

Why did you choose this product?

Calvin Max For years now I have been aware that my putting stroke is far too straightforward and back to benefit from a blade and needed a mallet. But a combination of putter loyalty and bag vanity kept me in my old, not-so-trusty blade until I got this in my hands during a practice session. Compact and clean, it was exactly what I was looking for aesthetically in a mallet, with every ounce of the performance help I desperately needed.

What is the value for the money versus other options?

Calvin Max The Spider exists smack in the middle of the market when it comes to price, I can certainly spend less but not by much compared to how much more I could have spent.
