The Curated Take

3.8/5

The Dynafit ST Rotation 14 Ski Bindings are ideal for backcountry enthusiasts seeking a forgiving daily cruiser binding. These bindings excel at absorbing small mistakes, preventing early release, and allowing skiers to cover more ground on skin tracks. However, they are not the best choice for activities requiring hard and fast power transfer, like jumps or park skiing. The toe piece may occasionally loosen and jiggle, and adjusting the heel DIN to compensate for the fixed toe piece's release can lead to stress and potential failures. This binding is perfect for those wanting to explore backcountry without sacrificing gear quality.

Ideal for
  • Daily cruiser for spending more time in the backcountry
  • Absorbing little mistakes to prevent early release when encountering various snow conditions
  • Can go farther on the skin track allowing for more vertical feet skied
Not ideal for
  • Not ideal for hard and fast power transfer (i.e. jumps, park, etc.)
  • The toe piece will sometimes loosen and jiggle
  • Cranking the heel DIN to accommodate for fixed DIN release on toe piece will cause unnecessary stress and potential failures

Expert Reviews of the Dynafit ST Rotation 14 Ski Bindings

Levi Nells The Dynafit ST Rotation 14 is a versatile binding that is unparalleled when it comes to functionality and customer interface. Simple yet elegant, the ST Rotation binding is suitable for those who are in real-world use, a 50/50% skier on and off the lift line at the resort. The bindings are lightweight and durable enough to withstand the daily wear and tear that comes with backcountry skiing. They can absorb lots of little mistakes that have forces involved with losing edges and variable snow conditions. They are light enough to pack on the miles in any snow condition. With such a high DIN adjustment, one's skiing ability doesn't have to be compromised by hauling bulky hybrid bindings. They can do a lot well but not any given category perfectly well. The average wear and tear doesn't quite add up to the infamous toe piece "jiggle" in such a short time span. This binding is not a downhill binding — the toe piece has a fixed DIN. Some people will try and crank the heel DIN to compensate for the lower release factor causing failures. Overall, this binding has seen many miles and days under my feet that give justice when used in its intended purpose, it is a magical experience! I highly recommend this binding for anyone who is interested in getting into touring without having to sacrifice their existing gear for MORE expensive new stuff.

Review Ratings

Release Reliability

5/5
Levi Nells gave 5 of 5 stars. The release reliability on the binding is high — it will keep up with the rider on steep off-piste runs but will also release when needed on in-bounds/hardpack snow. Absorption of the toe and heel piece working together allows the user to encounter unpredictable snow conditions without the worry of releasing prematurely.

Durability

3/5
Levi Nells gave 3 of 5 stars. The binding itself has a handful of plastic components to shave weight. Those components are at risk of becoming loose or, in the worst-case scenario, breaking. Most breaks I have heard and seen happen when the user increases the DIN setting on the heel piece to compensate for early release, causing unnecessary stress on plastic components and leading to failure. Wear and tear of the binding will show on plastic components that may not be covered by warranty.

Versatility

4/5
Levi Nells gave 4 of 5 stars. An all-mountain, tech-style binding allows for a wider range of boot compatibility in the AT boot realm. One can rent and try new boots without needing a different binding or different ski. A large range of adjustments accommodates Boot Sole Length (BSL) of various sizes. It's a very versatile binding for users of all ski abilities.

Power Transfer

3/5
Levi Nells gave 3 of 5 stars. Power transfer feels as if I am skiing a downhill binding on groomers and blacks at a resort. Designed for uphill use, I feel the lightweight aspect of the binding doing a lot of the work, as opposed to an alpine downhill binding letting the ski do all the work. It can withstand high forces, but in comparison to the ski, the binding can't do all of the work — the rider also has to expend energy to ski hard and fast with this binding. More work means less time skiing.

FAQs

What do you love about this product?

Levi Nells I love that this binding can carry out large accommodations of ski ability for most people. The user interface is fairly simple. The mechanisms and clear depictions of what is intended are clear and concise. The brand itself, Dynafit, brings to mind a very durable, reliable, and simple design when it comes to backcountry skiing. In the following, I will showcase the mentioned attributes of why I love this ski binding. The ski binding is designed for the most basic functionality when it comes to uphill and downhill skiing. Easy as stepping into the toe piece first, I feel secure and connected to my ski as I would a downhill frame binding. With the heel piece integrated with a U-bolt of the highest measured DIN resistance of 14, I feel the responsiveness needed when skiing hard, steep lines, especially when the snow is variable or unpredictable. In touring mode, the binding is solid with no sense or lack of responsiveness. It is lightweight enough that breaking trail or setting the skin track is enjoyable. The heel piece turret mechanism turns clockwise to have access to two heel risers while touring. The formidable heel design allows me to step my heel down, disengaging the brakes. This means when I'm ready to start skiing, I virtually eliminate the risk of watching my ski zoom down the mountain without me. The absorption of forces integrated into the bindings allows for small mistakes when I encounter unpredictable snow conditions. The toe piece will pivot on its base plate in both directions, left and right, to stop the event of early release on the binding. The heel piece has a range of about 10mm of travel forward and backward along the length axis of the ski to allow the user to find pockets where they sink. This absorption also prevents the unlikely circumstance of early release in soft and hard snow patches. Overall, I love this binding for its features in safety, reliability, functionality, and look. I highly recommend this binding for anyone considering backcountry touring or similar adventures.

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Levi Nells My favorite moment in these skis was on a ski touring day on Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado. A group of four of us had been ski touring the area for the weekend, and we decided to end it on a cruiser day. The skis I had at the time were wider 108mm skis, so I was voted to lead the skin track. The binding itself was so quick and easy that I was ready to go way sooner than my friends. The uphill portion was extremely fluid, with no awkward stances trying to engage the heel risers. Once at the top we shared a moment of contentment of where we were. Switching to ski mode with the heel first saved my ski from zooming down the mountain like those with leashes will face sooner or later. Easy to transition, easy to troubleshoot, we were skiing in no time. Fresh powder the whole way down allowed me to ski like I was at the resort. Very responsive and grabby in the best ways. A pretty basic day for ski touring, but what I remembered most was not having to worry or expect some kind of binding predicament that prevented me from having fun.

Why did you choose this product?

Levi Nells I chose this product because of its versatility in accommodating skiers of all types who want to venture into the backcountry. Its sleek, simple design allows the experienced user to troubleshoot any errors. It is a forgiving ski binding that can absorb small mistakes folks make when encountering unpredictable snow conditions.
