Expert Reviews of the Smith Maze Helmet

Aidan Uralli The Smith Maze Helmet is one of the top helmets on the market, and it’s no coincidence. The Maze offers top-of-the-line protection. With the MIPS technology featured in the helmet, I can always rest easy knowing my noggin is safe on the mountain. While many highly protective helmets lack style, the Maze doesn’t. The sleek design keeps my kit looking super clean on the mountain. One thing that I personally really enjoy about the Maze is its versatility. I like to wear a brimmed hat underneath my helmet and sunglasses when I go touring, and the design of the Maze does a great job of accommodating that. I can seamlessly switch between goggles, hats, and sunglasses without losing any comfort or performance.
The Smith Maze Helmet is a great all-around helmet for skiing and snowboarding. I have depended on a version of this helmet each season for at least the last three years while lapping resorts, on backcountry missions, and on multi-day hut trips. This has been my only helmet for snowboarding and serves me well in winter storms and spring sunshine alike. I fell hard on a powder day in 2020 and cracked my Smith Maze Helmet on a stump under the snow. I credit the helmet and the MIPS system with saving my brain and neck that day. I replaced that helmet directly and haven't stopped singing the Maze's praises since then! I originally liked the Maze because I thought it was stylish, but learning firsthand how protective it can be made me a dedicated fan. It's a great helmet for resort skiing and riding because it is very warm, especially with the included ear pads. I've found it well-equipped for various conditions and temperatures although there aren't many vents and I can't close the ones it has. Wearing a thin head covering and/or hood with the helmet makes the coldest days bearable, and I can easily remove the ear pads for comfort or airflow for warmer weather and longer tours. The Smith Maze Helmet gives me peace of mind because it's highly protective, versatile, and lightweight enough not to be a burden on overnight trips.

Waterproofing

5/5
Aidan Uralli gave 5 of 5 stars. The thoughtful design of the Maze allows me to stay dry no matter the conditions. How the helmet is engineered ensures that my head can air out but not let water in. When skiing at Mt. Baker last year, it rained, and sometimes it rained a lot. When I wore this helmet, it kept the rain out, which is a tough ask of any helmet.
gave 4 of 5 stars. The Smith Maze is fairly waterproof for a snowboarding helmet. It has about five vents that are strategically positioned to allow some airflow through on one hand but limited precipitation on the other. The helmet shell itself is quite waterproof. The only reason I don't rate this helmet 5/5 for waterproofing is because the vents are fixed open, and I cannot close them.

Durability

5/5
Aidan Uralli gave 5 of 5 stars. I have had this helmet for almost three years now, and I have never had to worry about its durability. I have taken a few spills, dropped it, thrown it in the car, etc., and it still looks and feels brand new. Smith did a great job ensuring that this helmet will last a long time.
gave 5 of 5 stars. The Smith Maze is a durable helmet as long as I take reasonably good care of it. Like any snowboard helmet, the Smith Maze is not made to withstand more than one huge impact, so don't check it in airline luggage or throw it around the car's trunk. That said, if one treats it sensibly, this helmet can certainly last for multiple seasons.

Comfort

5/5
Aidan Uralli gave 5 of 5 stars. I have always run into the issue of buying uncomfortable helmets with hot spots when I wear them for a long time. After wearing this helmet for several seasons, I’ve never encountered any issues around comfort. The built-in padding allows for all-day comfort and also makes the helmet completely customizable to fit my head shape.
gave 5 of 5 stars. The Smith Maze's comfortability is one of the main reasons I have bought multiple over the years. It is super light, and the padding is fairly adjustable, so I can wear it alone or with a thin layer underneath easily. I've spent long resort days and multiple trips in the backcountry with this helmet very comfortably.

Ventilation

4/5
Aidan Uralli gave 4 of 5 stars. The ventilation on this helmet is just right and offers a bit of customization. On a long and hot spring skiing day, this helmet has ample venting that allows me to keep my head cool. If it’s still too warm, I can pop the ear warmers out for extra airflow through the helmet.
gave 4 of 5 stars. The vents on the Smith Maze do a great job, even though they're fixed in an open position. They allow a good amount of airflow while keeping snow and water out surprisingly well. If there's too much breeze with the vents, it's easy enough to layer underneath the helmet. If there's not enough ventilation, say while touring, it's also easy to remove the ear pads for drastically increased breathability.

Adjustability

4/5
Aidan Uralli gave 3 of 5 stars. Unfortunately, the Smith Maze doesn’t have a BOA system or a traditional way to adjust the helmet size. But with that being said, the helmet comes with a variety of pads and cushioning that allows someone to make a more customizable fit.
gave 5 of 5 stars. Although the helmet's vents aren't adjustable, the chin strap and ear pads, fortunately, are. Optional light padding within the helmet can also be removed or changed for comfortability or for other layering adjustments. The chin strap works well and cinches down snuggly, and the removable ear pads make this helmet either very warm or fairly breathable.

Protection

5/5
Aidan Uralli gave 5 of 5 stars. The Smith Maze comes in two versions, MIPS and Non-MIPS. The MIPS technology is the best in its class and is the technology to beat in ski helmet tech. That said, the version without MIPS still offers best-in-class protection to keep the important stuff safe.
gave 5 of 5 stars. The Smith Maze's protection is definitely one of the reasons I have owned multiple helmets. This helmet has certainly protected me against at least one substantial impact, where I believe I had a light concussion instead of possibly being knocked out had I not been wearing this helmet. The forehead portion of the helmet cracked on impact, and I immediately ordered a replacement Smith Maze the next day. Although snowboard helmets aren't good for multiple major impacts, it only takes riding away from one significant impact to make the investment completely worth it. In my opinion, this helmet is certainly no exception.

FAQs

What do you love about this product?

Aidan Uralli The thing I love most about this helmet is its combination of style and protection. The Maze offers excellent protection for my noggin and also doesn’t sacrifice style.
I love the Smith Maze for several reasons, namely its fit, versatility, and protectiveness. The Maze has a "rounder profile" fit compared to other Smith options like the Holt or Code. I prefer the Maze for its fit and comfortability, and the adjustability works well. Overall, I find this quite a warm helmet, especially with a neck tube or balaclava underneath. I like being able to remove the ear pads for extra ventilation when touring or riding in warmer conditions. Most importantly, I feel that I can trust the level of protection provided by Smith's MIPS-integrated version of this helmet, as it's saved my head on at least one memorable occasion. This is a stylish, useful, and reliable helmet for all snowboarding conditions.

What was your favorite moment with this gear?

Aidan Uralli So many great moments took place in this helmet last year, so it’s hard to choose my favorite one. But if I had to choose, I would say skiing down at sunset on an empty mountain with my best friends at Steamboat last year. Another memorable moment was when I hit my head on a tree last year and ended up fine with no damage to me or my helmet.
My favorite moment wearing a Smith Maze was farming corn snow in Colorado on one spring mission. We started our approach before the sun was up, and it was still chilly in the shadows. The Maze's ear pads kept me warm and cozy for an hour-plus on the skin track without overheating. When we stopped to switch from skins to crampons for ascending the couloir, I removed my ear pads to climb comfortably. By then, the temperature was rising, and I definitely appreciated the extra ventilation. We made it to the saddle with more than enough energy to focus on descending safely and in style, and what a ride it was. I was grateful for the Smith Maze's versatility with extreme temperature swings on that adventure.

Why did you choose this product?

Aidan Uralli So many helmets are on the market these days, so choosing one can be a bit daunting at times. With that being said, it was easy to choose the Maze. First, it offered MIPS protection, which is necessary when discussing helmet protection. Secondly, I really enjoyed the look of the helmet. It was sleek and stylish, giving me the look I wanted on the mountain.
I chose the Smith Maze mostly because I trust its protectiveness for snowboarding at resorts, and I like its style. I had an older model Smith Maze that I'm convinced saved my brain (and my neck) when I cracked it on a stump several years ago. I replaced it with the Matte Charcoal color because I liked the way it looked and made sure to get the MIPS version because I was dedicated to it by that point. The Smith Maze is a great choice for a protective and functional helmet that I think looks cool, too.
