Expert Reviews of the Giro Ledge FS MIPS Helmet
Lucia L The Giro Ledge FS is a simple skate-style helmet that looks sleek and stylish while providing the tech of higher-level helmets. It’s equipped with MIPS, an essential for my helmet selection. There are eight vents total; the ones on top don’t close, so if someone rides all day in the rain, chances are a little water might come in. That said, the helmet is breathable (even with the thicker material). The earmuffs and goggle retainer are also removable if someone wants an even simpler look. Overall, this helmet has all the safety and comfort features of a high-level helmet at an affordable price point.

Waterproofing
3/5
Lucia L gave 3 of 5 stars. The Giro Ledge FS has a very similar design to the helmet I normally ride with, which is the Smith Code. The vents are pretty much in the exact place on my helmet and structured similarly. Based on my experience, helmets with no overhead vents do a pretty good job of holding the water out. That said, the vents on this helmet are larger and more open than those on my helmet, so I think on a rainy day, having a hood might be beneficial, especially for those front vents.
Comfort
4/5
Lucia L gave 4 of 5 stars. The Giro Ledge FS MIPS Helmet was pretty comfortable right from the start. The earmuffs are not too tight or thick; one can remove them if they create a bother. The helmet is also adjustable to fit a beanie or balaclava underneath on a colder day. The adjustment takes a minute to do because the wearer would have to take the helmet off, but that could be something they do in the morning or at lunch and then are set for the rest of the day.
Ventilation
4/5
Lucia L gave 4 of 5 stars. The Giro Ledge FS MIPS Helmet has eight fixed open vents around the helmet and on the front. These vents make sure that on the warmer days, air can flow in and out, with added ventilation if one removes the padding. On colder days, though, cold air could get into the helmet. This can be mitigated by wearing a beanie or a buff between. The only problem I can foresee with the fixed open vents would be on a rainy day, where a hood might come in handy.
Protection
4/5
Lucia L gave 4 of 5 stars. The MIPS protection will make sure to absorb and spread any sharp impact to avoid harsh injuries. The helmet seems durable and well-built, leading me to believe it will keep noggins safe through bumps or tumbles.
Adjustability
4/5
Lucia L gave 4 of 5 stars. The Giro Ledge FS MIPS comes with an adjustable sizing inside the helmet to adjust the helmet to a range of sizes. However, the range is not huge. Wearers must also remove the helmet to access the sizing adjustment, which might take a few minutes.
Durability
5/5
Lucia L gave 5 of 5 stars. Being on the thicker side, I think this helmet will hold up well, especially to the lighter bumps here and there or the occasional smack by a chairlift. The shell seems pretty durable and resistant to scratches.
FAQs
What do you love about this product?
Lucia L What stood out to me about the Giro Ledge FS helmet was the balance in its simplicity and performance. The helmet design is sleek and simple, similar to a skate-style helmet. However, the Ledge FS has all the features needed in a ski helmet, including MIPS protection and adjustable sizing. I like how Giro set an affordable price point for a helmet with many necessary features.
Why did you choose this product?
Lucia L I chose to test out the Giro Ledge FS helmet because it has MIPS at a low price point. I think having MIPS is essential for all riders to keep their noggin safe, but many riders opt for the MIPS-less version because of the lower cost. I like that this helmet gives riders on a budget a safe option with multiple features, including removable padding, adjustable sizing, and multiple vents.
What is the value for the money versus other options?
Lucia L The value for money of the Giro Ledge FS MIPS helmet is fair, considering the amount of features the helmet is equipped with. MIPS helmets normally run on the pricier side, so the Ledge FS aligns with others. The helmet is simple but has vents, can be adjusted, and has removable padding, which are some of the key features I look for in helmets. One gets everything they need in a simple and affordable helmet.
