Tl;dr: If you are new to golf and are looking for a relatively affordable, high-quality driver, or if you’re an experienced golfer who has never considered a Cobra driver version but have heard good things and are interested in optimizing your driving game, you are in the right place! Cobra golf clubs continue to impress with their quality and solid price point in the market today, with their putters, fairway woods, irons, wedges, hybrids, and drivers all winning praise and receiving strong reviews.

As a Curated golf expert and lifelong golfer, I would say that one area of expertise I have is with Cobra drivers. I have played the Cobra King F8, the Cobra Radspeed XB, and now have a shiny new Cobra Aerojet as my gamer. The only drivers of the past five Cobra models I have NOT had in my bag are the Cobra King F9 driver and the Cobra LTDx driver, although I have tested the LTDx model in a simulator and was impressed with the innovation as they set a new standard of precision and performance, with some of the best players on the PGA tour and LPGA tour like Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson using Cobra gear.

Different Driver Heads Fit Different Golfers

Cobra, like most other major golf equipment brands, typically feature different driver heads each year that are designed to perform in specific ways, but all contain advanced technology which provide exceptional performance. Often, they end up offering three styles of head.

Standard Driver Head

These kinds of drivers feature more weight up near the face of the driver, which will induce lower spinning shots. Who would need such a driver? Well, many low handicap golfers with higher than average swing speeds and who are very consistent with their ball striking seek out a low spin driver like the Cobra LTDx LS model.

Better players usually also have a positive angle of attack (AoA), and when you combine low spin, high clubhead speed and a positive AoA you have the recipe for grip and rip bombs, which is when you swing hard and hit for maximum distance. To me, this club head is optimal for only a small number of players, but if you hit it well you will get the most performance out of it.

The Cobra LTDx LS head received terrific reviews as a low spin option that actually is fairly forgiving compared to other brands, so if you are on the fence between a standard head and a low spin version the LTDx might be something to try out.

Draw-Biased Driver Head

Since many mid to high handicap golfers, who make up the majority of players, have an out-to-in (over the top) swing which promotes a left to right ball flight (controlled it is a fade, while the extreme shot will be a slice), the draw-biased models are a Godsend.

Essentially, these kinds of heads, like the Radspeed XD model, feature more weight in the heel of the club, which encourages greater face closure, and while it won’t eliminate the results of a poor swing, it can help “soften” that left-to-right shape and turn it either into a fade from a slice or a relatively straight shot from a fade.

Typically, another characteristic about these driver head designs is higher spin and extreme forgiveness. These traits, while keeping the ball in play more often, usually result in higher launch and greater spin, while sacrificing distance.

Now, of course, another key aspect in getting fit for a driver is choosing the correct shaft, and shafts all have different designs that can impact launch, spin, and dispersion, so please be mindful of that. Let’s now look at the driver heads I mention above in more detail as my top choices to consider when purchasing a Cobra driver.

Top Cobra Driver Recommendations

Standard Driver Head Category - Cobra Aerojet

The Aerojet driver was very well received and is considered a top driver for 2023. It had a hard act to follow, as the LTDx was rated very well in 2022, but the overall consensus is that the Aerojet does feature some marginal improvements over the LTDx. This is important to note if you are on a budget and the marginal gains are not worth the added $100 price tag.

As I mentioned previously, I have tested the Aerojet and was so impressed that I bought one. And, when I tried it out I wasn’t actively considering upgrading my Radspeed XB because it’s also a really good driver. But, after seeing consistently higher ball speeds with better spin rates which gave me straighter shots on average, I was sold on upgrading.

Some of the features of the Aerojet, which looks for increased speed, are the raised skirt, symmetrical shaping, and streamlined edges.

Other technology in the Aerojet driver head:

• The PWRSHELL L-cup (maximizes launch and distance), H.O.T. Face created by AI (more ball speed and spin consistency across the face), and PWR-BRIDGE (maximum energy transfer for faster ball speeds) on the bottom of the club behind the face

Aesthetically, I personally like the look of the club, which features a glossy carbon top, with some carbon on the sole as well to save on weight, and a combination of white, blue and red accents. The sound and feel of the head is also very pleasing and gives the sensation of power and speed. It’s just the total package, and I can’t wait to game it this year.

Low Spin (LS) Driver Head Category - Cobra LTDx LS

Following up on the successful Cobra Radspeed series, the LTDx, which stands for Longest Total Distance, was immediately hailed by reviewers as potentially the best driver of 2022, with the LS model being featured on several YouTube channels as a top contender for longest driver of the year and an ideal choice for low handicappers.

The LS version is attractive in a few key ways, with the first being the look. It comes in two colorways, one a peacoat blue/red combo with a gloss crown that I find to be absolutely gorgeous. The other is more understated with a matt black crown and goldish highlights, which is a far cry from the loud colorway of the previous year’s Radspeed with its black and bright green colors.

The other appealing aspect of the LTDx LS is the size and shape of the head, and the way the gloss carbon crown is framed by a matte material.

The LS head is fade-biased by design, and features two weights placed near the front of the driver face, which helps create the conditions for low spin and fast ball speeds. One is 10 grams, and the other is 3 grams, so in theory you can move them to create a slightly straight to fade bias, or a more pronounced fade bias.

Many aspects of the driver’s technology is the same as the Aerojet, but one feature that was part of the LTDx but was not continued with the Aerojet is the CNC Milled Infinity Face.

So, if you are looking for a high performing low spin driver head for a reasonable price, the LTDx LS is a top choice.

Draw-Biased Driver Head Category - Cobra Radspeed XD (Xtreme Draw)

For beginner golfers and players who struggle with a slice off the tee, most companies feature some kind of draw-biased driver. For Cobra, one of their best versions of this type of driver is the Cobra Radspeed XD, with it's extreme forgiveness, effortless launch, and lightweight design.

Technology highlights for the Cobra Radspeed XD:

• T-Bar chassis construction provides light-weight strength
• The CNC Milled Infinity Face offers very precise manufacturing tolerance and spin consistency
• Radial weighting (hence the “Radspeed”) in the lower front on each extreme end of the face delivers on low CG (Center of Gravity)

As I had mentioned earlier in the article, a draw-biased driver head is designed for the higher handicap golfer who may have a slower swing speed and a tendency to slice. The forgiveness and launch characteristics all rank high for the XD, but while the forgiveness and heel weighting will produce healthy launch and spin numbers, with a straighter flight, the one thing that suffers a bit is distance. For many, this trade-off is more than worth it.
