Tldr: When buying women's golf clubs, it’s important to consider height, skill level, frequency of play, swing speed, brand, flex, and weight.

I've been playing golf for over 30 years. There has been so much change in women's golf clubs through the years. Luckily, things just keep getting better. However, as technology has changed and options have improved, the decisions have become more complex.

In this guide to buying women's golf clubs, I'll show you what options you have, what to consider, and, more importantly, what really matters when you purchase women's clubs.

What to Consider When Buying Women's Golf Clubs

It would be easy if you could walk into a golf shop and just grab a set of women's golf clubs off the shelf and know they would work. That's not the case. There are many factors to consider here, including height, skill level, cost, set makeup, and more.

What Golf Clubs Do I Need For My Height?

Women golfers between 5 '3 and 5' 7" can use the standard length women's golf clubs. Any women golfers taller than 5'7" or shorter than 5'3" should consider custom clubs.

In addition to custom-length clubs, some manufacturers like Tour Edge, Callaway, Wilson, and Cobra offer petite women's sets with a length of -1 inch.

What Is My Skill Level?

You can take my personal experience on this one: the better you get at golf, the more likely it is that you will need custom golf clubs to work for your game.

The majority of golf clubs for women are designed for mid handicappers, high handicappers, and beginners.

Complete golf club sets that come with all the clubs and a cart bag or stand bags are typically made for less experienced players.

What Is My Swing Speed?

The faster the swing speed, the stiffer the shaft you will need in your golf clubs. Women golfers have only one specific golf shaft. Outside of that, there are options for faster swing-speed golfers to move to the men's shafts for more stiffness.

What’s The Best Club Set Makeup For Women Golfers?

Some women's golf clubs are sold as a set with 7 to 10 clubs included. Other times, you may consider purchasing individual clubs like a driver or wedge and putting together a complete custom set. There is no perfect club set makeup for a woman golfer. However, there are two common examples of a club set makeup that works well for women:

  • Option 1: Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 6 hybrid, 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, Pitching Wedge, Gap Wedge, Sand Wedge and Putter
  • Option 2: Driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 6 hybrid, 7 hybrid, 8 iron, 9 iron, Pitching Wedge, Gap Wedge, Sand Wedge, Lob Wedge and Putter.

What Brand Should Women Golfers Look For?

Top companies like Callaway, Cleveland, TaylorMade, Tour Edge, and Cobra make some of the best women's golf club sets. When purchasing golf sets, you will be a little limited in the brand. However, if you branch out to individual clubs, there are more options for women from brands such as Titleist or Mizuno.

You don't want to be too brand loyal when choosing the best golf club sets. Ask a Curated Golf Expert to help you find a brand with a strong reputation and focus more on getting a club set that matches your needs as a player.

Should Women Golfers Buy a Complete Golf Set?

A complete golf set is a great way to get golf clubs at a fair price and have them perfectly loft-gapped. Women's complete sets provide higher launch and more forgiveness but are meant for mid to high handicappers and beginners.

For low handicapped women, a custom set with proper shaft flex and clubhead technology is a better fit.

How Much Do Women Golf Clubs Cost?

Women's golf clubs range in price depending on the needs of the female golfer. If you need just a blade putter or a new hybrid, you may spend between $140 and $250. However, for a complete set like the Callaway Reva or TaylorMade Kalea, you will spend over $800.

When putting together a custom set of 14 clubs, the price is usually over $2000.

What Are the Different Types of Women's Golf Clubs?

Women's golf clubs are broken down into categories, including the driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and putters.

Features to Look for in Women's Golf Clubs

When shopping for women's golf clubs, there are some recent technology upgrades that are really worth looking for in a set of clubs. I was a little resistant to this "forgiveness" technology in the beginning, and now I don't know why I waited so long.

Perimeter Weighting

Perimeter weighting in the irons can offer more forgiveness on off-center hits. Many women golfers don't enjoy using their irons as they find them to be inconsistent and unstable. Finding a perimeter-weighted set with a large sweet spot can make all the difference.

The perimeter weighting combined with the proper shaft weight will also help improve tempo and overall feel in the irons.

Precise Loft Design

If you follow golf news, you know that plenty of golf manufacturers have delofted their golf clubs to give players more distance. Distance is great, but when you can't get the ball up off the ground, the game is not fun.

Look for a golf club with easy launch and more traditional higher lofts.

Smaller Grip Size

Women's hands are typically smaller than men's. Most women's clubs come with a stock grip that is undersized (typically 1/16 smaller than standard). If you wear a women's size glove, that should be fine, but if you wear men's size gloves, you may need a standard golf grip size.

Adjustability

Adjustability is such a great benefit when you can find it. Having a nice carbon or titanium driver that can easily change loft or even open or close the face a little will make all the difference in your game.

Sometimes, it takes seeing an example of what certain women were fitted with to see what direction you should take your club purchasing journey. Here are a few examples of real women golfers and their journey to purchasing new golf clubs.

Samantha

  • Age: 30
  • Height: 5'5"
  • Skill Level: Beginner

Samantha, a brand new golfer, was looking for a women's golf club set with high launch and lots of forgiveness. As a beginner, it was also really important for her to have a mix of clubs (driver, hybrid, fairway wood, etc.) to learn all the different types of shots.

Features to look for:

  • Forgiveness and high launch
  • Lightweight
  • A complete set with all clubs included

Golf Club Examples: Callaway Strata Set, Callaway Reva Set, Cleveland Launcher XL Set

Abby

  • Age: 40
  • Height: 5'6"
  • Skill Level: 10 Handicap

Abby is an accomplished player with a 10 handicap who is looking to get to the single digits this year. She knows that a complete golf club set for women is not the right fit and instead wants to purchase individual custom wedges to suit her game. The wedges that come with a complete set will not have the spin, feel, and control she needs.

Features to look for:

  • Feel
  • Bounce and grind options
  • Groove technology to improve spin

Golf Club Examples: Mizuno T24 Soft White Satin Wedges, Titleist SM9 Tour Chrome Wedge, Callaway Jaws Raw Wedge

Joan

  • Age: 60
  • Height: 5'2"
  • Skill Level: 25 handicap

Joan has been playing golf most of her life. As she gets a little older, her ball speed decreases a bit, and she notices a loss of distance. She knows she needs lightweight clubs, and since they all need to be replaced, a complete set option is the best thing for her. Women with slower swing speeds who are losing distance need lightweight clubs with a low center of gravity.

Features to look for:

  • Lightweight and flexible shafts
  • Set with woods/hybrids included
  • Distance enhancing technology

Golf Club Examples: Cobra Fly XL, Tour Edge Moda Silk, TaylorMade Kalea
