Expert Reviews of the Callaway Jaws Raw Plasma Black Wedge

Payton G The Callaway Jaws Raw Plasma Black Wedge continues a long line of success from Callaway in the wedge category. With seven different loft options and four grind options, Callaway offers 17 combinations of this wedge. Players with a steeper angle of attack will get along better with the X and W grinds, whereas players with a shallow angle of attack will fare better with the S and Z grinds. When testing this product, I found that greenside spin stayed relatively high even in unfavorable conditions. The raw finish combined with some new groove technology allowed many of my shots to retain spin even in wet conditions and deep rough. While the black finish may not appeal to all, it greatly reduces sunlight glare. This also held true after some of the finish wore off and gradually faded to an orangey rust. Another thing to note is that the wedge is cast rather than forged. As a result, the feel leaves little to be desired and provides somewhat of a clicky feel on full shots and longer pitch shots. However, this does not impact performance and will likely give the wedge and grooves a little longer lifespan.

Review Ratings

Greenside Spin

5/5
Payton G gave 5 of 5 stars. This wedge gives me plenty of options when it comes to greenside chip shots. I can hit one hop and stop spinners and also some traditional chip and runs with the Jaws Raw. I find that the the grooves perform very well in wet conditions with very little noticeable drop in spin numbers. The same can be said about lies in moderate rough.

Spin

5/5
Payton G gave 5 of 5 stars. I found that wedge shots from 50-100 yards have more than enough spin to hold greens and stop the ball on a dime. When testing on the simulator during my fitting, I found consistent spin numbers around 9,000-10,000rpm. This helped to solidify that it would stop on a dime or even spin backward under the right conditions.

Feel

4/5
Payton G gave 4 of 5 stars. The feel of the Jaws Raw Plasma Black wedge is good. Due to it being a cast head rather than forged, it isn't necessarily the softest and best-feeling wedge I've ever played. That being said, it feels soft compared to many cast wedges on the market and solid on all kinds of shots.

Full Shots

4/5
Payton G gave 4 of 5 stars. I find that this wedge performs very well on full shots. My spin numbers and shot distances are very consistent. This allows me to feel confident that the club will go exactly as far as I need it to. The sole grinds make turf interaction out of the fairway and rough feel great with little to no drag. The only flaw is that it isn't the softest feeling wedge I've hit when it comes to full shots.

Sound

5/5
Payton G gave 5 of 5 stars. The Jaws Raw produces a very muted sound, but just enough to give me feedback on how I struck my shot. The acoustics are just loud enough without being offensive—perfect for a wedge like this.
