The Curated Take

3.5/5

The 22 Designs Outlaw X Ski Bindings are ideal for telemark skiers seeking a bombproof binding that excels in all conditions, from resort to backcountry. They offer an easy transition between free pivot uphill and downhill modes without removing skis. The bindings are constructed mostly of stainless steel, providing durability, lateral and torsional control, and corrosion resistance. While not DIN-certified, they offer a safer release mechanism than older telemark gear. With adjustable spring preload and optional leashes or brakes, these bindings are a versatile choice for aggressive and larger riders or anyone seeking reliable performance.

Expert Reviews of the 22 Designs Outlaw X Ski Bindings

Ben Cavett The 22 Designs Outlaw X is a do-it-all step in NTN telemark binding. This binding can easily be switched between a free pivot uphill setting and a highly adjustable preload telemark action without needing to step out. There are also three points of inclination for uphill travel. The binding is mostly made of stainless steel, increasing durability and lateral and torsional control while preventing corrosion. The binding is said to release with a large enough lateral force but is not DIN-rated. The release ease is based on the preload setting of the binding. I have personally ejected three times under proper forces and thus find it credible and safer than other telemark options that do not offer binding release. There is also a large amount of aftermarket support and parts offered by 22 Designs, so these bindings are made to last a long time. Leashes or brakes are optional and offered online.

Review Ratings

Release Reliability

2/5
Ben Cavett gave 2 of 5 stars. The 22 Designs Outlaw X does not guarantee a release in the event of a crash but offers a chance for the binding to release. The ease of release is controlled by the spring preload adjustment. I personally ride on the softer end. I have released three times under a moderate rotational force and have been happy with no pre-releases. Most telemark bindings, especially older ones like 75mm, just don't release under any force, so it's nice to have a binding that can offer one.

Durability

4/5
Ben Cavett gave 4 of 5 stars. The 22 Designs Outlaw X is a durable workhorse of a binding. It's well suited for aggressive and larger riders to someone who also wants a trustworthy binding for the backcountry. If anything goes wrong with the binding, the company sells pretty much any part or can offer direct service on the binding.

Versatility

4/5
Ben Cavett gave 4 of 5 stars. The 22 Designs Outlaw X is a solid binding for the resort or backcountry. The binding has a free pivot uphill setting, making uphill travel comfortable. The heavy-duty metal part of the binding is ready to handle endless days of aggressive tree, mogul, park, or any type of skiing I want to throw at it.

Power Transfer

4/5
Ben Cavett gave 4 of 5 stars. Compared to older 75mm telemark bindings, the Outlaw NTN binding gives riders a much larger amount of torsional rigidity and a smoother and more adjustable spring preload to give better control of the ski and edges. It's no wonder that NTN is set to replace older telemark gear.
