Torrey Pines played a wonderful host to the 2021 U.S. Open. Many of the pros playing in last weekend’s Open described it as one of the best U.S. Open venues ever – and the competition didn’t disappoint either.

On Sunday, Jon Rahm poured in two amazing birdie putts on the 17th and 18th hole to claim his 1st Major Championship and 6th win on the PGA Tour overall – all while becoming the Number 1 ranked player in the world. There was karma, redemption, and celebration for Rahm on his first Father’s Day! After watching the end of the PGA Championship last month to congratulate Phil Mickelson, his buddy and fellow Arizona State University Sun Devil, on his Major Championship win, Rahm got the congratulatory hug from Phil this time around.

There was a point on Sunday where fifteen players were within four shots of the lead, including names like Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. However, leading into the closing holes it was a two-horse race between Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen. Louis bogeyed 17 after a poor tee shot and finished 18 with a birdie but it was not enough to catch Rahm. Oosthuizen recorded his sixth 2nd place finish in a major, tying Ernie Els and Gary Player, his fellow South African countrymen, for the second most 2nd place finishes in a major. 1st place in the bridesmaid category at a Major Championship? That belongs to Jack Nicklaus with an astounding nineteen 2nd place finishes…nineteen!

The big change for Jon Rahm this offseason was a move away from his partnership with TaylorMade over to Callaway back in January. The last time Royal St. George’s hosted The Open Championship was 2011 and Darren Clarke hoisted the Claret Jug.
