The 149th Open Championship didn’t disappoint. It was the perfect bow to wrap up the 2021 Major Golf Championship season. 24-year-old Collin Morikawa fired a 4-under 66 and joined Tiger Woods to become the only professional golfer to win the PGA Championship and Open Championship before the age of 25.

Jordan Spieth finished in solo 2nd at 13-under par, and Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen finished tied for 3rd at 11-under par. However, it was never really close as Collin lept out to an early lead with birdies on 7, 8, and 9 on the front side. Morikawa played pretty much flawless golf on Sunday and ended the day without carding a bogey. In fact, he hadn’t had a bogey since Saturday’s round – all the way back to the 5th hole. If you play the final 31 holes of a major at 9-under par, it apparently helps you emerge victorious!

In only his second season on tour, Collin has now won five events with two of those being Major Championships. He also has now set the bar as the only golfer to ever win 2 majors in his debut. Both of his major titles – The 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 Open Championship were his first time playing in both of those events.

Collin heads to Tokyo next week to represent the USA in the Olympics at Kasumigaseki Country Club. Justin Thomas will join Collin, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, Lexi Thompson, and Jessica Korda in representing the United States.

Collin Morikawa – What’s in the Bag?

Collin made a slight change to his irons before this event, and it obviously paid off. He ranked fifth in the field in greens in regulation, hitting 75% for the week and now leads the tour in shots gained: approach at 1.5 strokes per round – a healthy margin over the rest of the tour. He took the Taylormade P730 muscle back irons out of the bag (except for the pitching wedge) and replaced them with the Taylormade P7MC’s in the 7, 8, and 9 irons.

That is a wrap on the 2021 season! We have had four great (and historical) champions this year. Hideki Matsuyama became the first player from Japan to win a men’s Major Championship. Phil Mickelson became the oldest major champion ever, at the age of 50, by winning the PGA Championship. Jon Rahm became the number one player in the world when he won his first major – The U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, and now Collin Morikawa is the first player to ever win 2 Major Championships in his debut at each event.

2022 is sure to bring some historical moments. Here is a quick look at next year’s tournament dates and venues.

  • The Master’s (April 7-10, 2022) – Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, GA
  • PGA Championship (May 19-22, 2022) – Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, OK
  • U.S. Open (June 16-19, 2022) – The Country Club, Brookline, MA
  • The Open Championship (July 14-17, 2022) – The Old Course at St. Andrews, St Andrews, Scotland

Stay tuned for future coverage updates on the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin from September 24th – 26th.
