About this review This review is my own honest opinion of the wood, which I bought with my own money in February 2021.
My take
The Callaway Mavrik Sub-Zero 3 wood is geared for low handicap players and is a great 3 wood for control and workability.

How it performs
What I was looking for
I had owned the Ping G25 Woods for a while and decided that I needed an upgrade. I wanted something more controllable and workable, as well as something more forgiving, which the Mavrik Sub Zero claimed to be.
Why I chose this club
I was very thrilled with the Callaway Mavrik Driver, so I decided to test the Mavrik Sub Zero 3 wood. I was so happy with it that I did not test any other woods. I decided to purchase the Sub Zero model for its workability and control, which it does very well.
What I love about it
- Distance: The distance with this wood is awesome. I already hit a 3 wood pretty far, so I didn’t gain a ton of yardage. However, I was not looking for more distance. What I like about the distance with this club is that it’s consistent. I can count on it going a set distance every time.
- Forgiveness: Jailbreak technology is very real. I can completely miss the center of the face and still hit it just as far. It’s the most forgiving wood on the market in my opinion.
- Feel: The feel is fantastic. A solidly struck shot almost feels like a pure iron shot. It feels like I am not even hitting the ball. I can feel just how explosive it is coming off the face.
- Sound: The sound is powerful. It’s not high pitched, but it’s not so low that it sounds odd. The sound is loud and explosive. The sound is also responsive. The sound helps me determine just how well I hit it.
- Workability: The workability was surprisingly good. The Sub Zero model is billed as the more workable model. I was skeptical at first, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how workable it is. I can rely on the ball going where I want it to go.
- Adjustability: This wood is not adjustable, which doesn’t matter to me. In fact, the lack of adjustability allows the wood to be lighter. I like that it is not adjustable because it’s consistent and reliable. I don’t need to worry about changing the club.
- Shaft Feel: The shaft feels great. I love the extra stiff flex, and it feels responsive and powerful.
- Shaft Performance: This is a very high-performing shaft. The low kick point of this shaft helps keep the flight down. Although I still hit a high ball, I can bring the trajectory down if I need. It allows me to work the ball as needed and adjust the trajectory when I like.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Like its driver counterpart, this 3 wood is very sleek and appealing to the eye. The Sub Zero model has a smaller clubhead than the other models, which can look intimidating for the higher handicap player. It’s a small clubhead, but it packs a ton of heat.
- Grip Feel: I play a standard tour velvet grip. I like its consistency with or without a glove and in any weather.
- Launch Angle: I love the launch angle of this wood. I like to hit a high ball with the 3 wood, and the Mavrik Sub Zero allows me to do so. The high shot allows me to approach greens from far away and get it to stay on the green. This 3 wood allows me to do just that.
- Adjustable weights: The adjustable weights on this wood are very helpful. It comes with a heavy weight and a light weight that I can switch between the leading edge and the back. Putting the heavier weight up front helps bring the ball flight down a bit. Putting the lighter weight up front brings the ball flight up. This is extremely helpful in practice and preparation.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Adjustability: There is no adjustability, but that is not an issue for me.
- Spin: It has high spin, which may be an issue for some golfers. I like the high spin, so playing with shaft combinations will help me find the right amount of spin. With this club and shaft combination, I get more spin than what is typical with a 3 wood. I get almost no rollout off the tee, but this allows me to stick approach shots on the green.
Best shot with this club
The sixth hole at Hillcrest Country Club is a short par 4 that’s drivable with my 3 wood. While I’ve been able to hit the green many times, one day I was able to strike a perfect tee shot that landed just short of the hole and rolled right over the edge to about 3 feet. A kick-in eagle.
Value for the money vs. other options
The Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero 3W is an older model, so it already has great value. This is the best 3 wood on the market, in my opinion. I get a lot of club for the price, so I can’t recommend this wood enough.
Final verdict
This wood is incredibly long and forgiving. Jailbreak technology opens up a new world of versatility, and it helps make a traditionally difficult club to hit much easier to play.
