About this review This review is my honest opinion of the wedge, which I bought with my own money in July 2020.

My take

I have owned the Callaway Mack Daddy Wedge 4 in 60-degrees for over a year now and it has certainly fit my needs. I play on some mini-tour events in Florida and wedges are very important to my game. I play the s-grind, which I have found to be the most versatile grind as it has allowed me to play in numerous conditions and with plenty of freedom to open the face and get creative. This wedge is for intermediate to better players in my opinion.

What I was looking for

I was looking for a wedge where I didn’t have to think about what I was doing, I didn’t want to fidget with the wedge as I was about to hit the shot. I wanted to just lay it down and be able to go.

Why I chose this club

I decided to buy the wedge because it offered me the easiest way to just put down the club and hit it. Too many distractions would not allow me to play my best golf. These are easy to use and though they aren’t the most forgiving, they give me immediate feedback if I had a good shot or off-center shot: if I hit it properly I won’t feel any vibration, but if I don’t hit it correctly I will feel vibration. I also looked at Vokey SM7, but chose the Mack Daddy 4 at the end because they felt smooth with my swing and I liked the way they sounded and how much confidence they inspired when I looked at them before I swung the club..

What I love about it

  • Launch: The launch is very consistent, I don’t get surprised by the ball going to high or low, depending on my swing; it’s comforting to know the trajectory will be similar every time.
  • Forgiveness: There’s just enough forgiveness to give me some confidence that the ball will still go even if I miss-hit it just a bit.
  • Feel: I really love the feel of the wedges. Not too soft and not too hard for my tastes, I feel that I will get a consistent feel if I hit the ball properly. The ball seems to move up the grooves very smoothly as I swing through.
  • Spin: I like the amount of spin that you can get from this wedge. Assuming that I’m using a very high spin golf ball, and the grooves are clean and there is no moisture in the grass, the spin from these is terrific. I try to always have a towel with me for every shot to keep the clubface clean and try to get the best shot I can without dirt or moisture affecting the ball.
  • Bounce: To me, the bounce is just right at 10 degrees, which also helps in the bunkers, I found it very easy to hit. There’s a variety of bounces to choose from depending on the course conditions that you play and your swing type.
  • Around the Green: My favorite aspect of the wedge is the way I can hit many different shots around the green. I can do just about anything I need within 25 yards to the flag.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The look of these is beautiful and I have the forged satin chrome finish which minimizes the glare from the sun, the other option is a black matte finish that frames the golf ball nicely.
  • Innovation: The grooves are what make this stand out with the latest technology, I can sense the ball moving up the grooves.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Full Shots: I don’t tend to use the wedge for full shots, because I don’t usually hit from the full swing yardage for my 60-degree wedge.
  • Grip Feel: I prefer to have all my grips the same, therefore I changed these when I bought them. Having the grips, all the same, allows me to be confident and be familiar with all my clubs. The only connection I have to my clubs is through the grips.

Best Shot with this Wedge

I remember this as it was yesterday. I was playing in a mini-tour event at Champions Gate Golf course in Orlando. It was a par 3 and my tee shot went left about 35 yards and landed on a mound with an uphill lie. The green was flat so I knew to get it up high and try to check it quickly. Luckily the lie had just enough cushion underneath that I wasn’t too concerned about hitting it thin. Once I picked out my landing area, I just went up to the ball and hit it without any thoughts, it landed 3 feet from the hole and I finished my par. It was just so exciting to see the shot end up the way I visualized it, and the confidence I get from this club at address really helped me pull the trigger on this shot without a second thought.

Value for the money vs. other options

The Mack Daddy 4 is on the higher side of the price range. However, when I look at the finish, the shaft, the confidence I get when I look down on this club, the value for me is very high. The Titleist Vokey’s are a great wedge at a comparable price point, but the Mack Daddy 4 suited my eye.

Final verdict

The Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedge unlocks confidence and versatility, allowing golfers to play in almost any conditions and offer plenty of creativity. The look of these is beautiful andthe forged satin chrome finish which minimizes the glare from the sun. These wedges are perfect for the intermediate to strong player who wants a versitile wedge that will look great behind the ball and in the bag!
