My take

The Callaway Chrome Soft X golf ball is geared to players of abilities but thrives with high swing speeds on the drivers. With a slightly higher compression than the original Callaway Chrome Soft, it provides less spin off the driver but is still great on the short shots around the green!

How it performs

What I was looking for

• I tend to generate a lot of spin off of the driver. I was really looking for a ball that would calm down the spin off of the driver. But still, perform and spin hard on my shorter shots.

Why I chose this golf ball

• This ball suits just what I was looking for and is perfect for me. Low spin on longer shots but still fantastic greenside control.
• I tested other balls as well, TaylorMade TP5x and Titleist Prov1x. Both of those performed well, but I felt like the Callaway Chromesoft X out performed in both areas that were important to me.

What I love about it

• Distance: This ball is long! With it generating less spin off the driver, I am hitting this ball longer than others I have tested in this price range. Exceptional distance, no negatives here.
• Feel: This ball feels great; it does have a slightly harder cover than some tour balls. But in my case, I will deal with a slightly harder cover for less driver spin. However, this ball can feel a bit hard off the putter and wedges.
• Green Spin: Fantastic! This ball provides more greenside spin than other balls I have tested; it always spins when I want it to. Windy days into the wind, on short shots, the ball can spin too much if you're not careful.
• Durability:This ball is very durable. Like a lot of tour balls, the softcover can develop small knicks from cart path or tree contact. I have played entire 18-hole rounds with this ball. It is very durable; Just avoid cartpat, and you're good!
• Color: This ball has a nice matte finish, not too shiny but very white and enjoyable to look at! The bright white matte finish is easy to find!

Issues I’ve encountered

• Short shots:The drawbacks to this ball, in my case, or the slightly harder feel on short shots like wedges and putters. For those who prefer the softer feel on short shots, just go with the Callaway Chromesoft, not the X.

Best shot with this golf ball

This ball is long! I have hit some monster drives with a high penetrating ball flight even in windy conditions with its low spin. Have won several long drive holes with this ball, and many more to come!

Value for the money vs. other options

This ball is a great value; it is at the same price point as most tour balls. It does seem to have a better cover than some other tour balls, making it last longer and more bang for your buck!
