About this Review: This review is my own honest opinion of the club, which I bought with my own money in July 2019.

My take

The Callaway Apex Hybrid 2019 (also known as the Apex 19 hybrid) is a good hybrid golf club for any handicap and skill level. I find it very consistent off the tee as well as, on the fairway and rough. It offers a well-balanced head/face and provides confidence when looking down at address.

What I was looking for

I was looking for a hybrid to use in all types of situations, such as off the tee on tight fairways and long par 3’s, off the fairway on par 5’s, and in the rough with 200+ yards to green. Also, I wanted to pair this with my Apex 19 iron set, which I have had much success with. Ideally, I wanted a hybrid that would launch well and be a little forgiving in both directions.

Why I chose this club

I chose this club in a fitting along with my Apex 19 irons. It tested better than the other two hybrids I demoed, the Callaway Epic 19 hybrid and the TaylorMade SIM hybrid. Ultimately the Apex 19 hybrid proved to be the most consistent in terms of shot dispersion and distance. It was also the best off the deck for me.

What I love about it

  • Distance: The distance the Apex 19 hybrid achieves is not the farthest, but I find that it provides what I need. I can get it out 200-210 yards off the tee for par 3’s and also 200+ yards for par 5 approaches. While it lacks a bit in distance compared with some other clubs I have tried (such as the Epic), it fits into my game very well when I need it.
  • Forgiveness: In my experience, the best feature of the Apex 19 is its forgiveness. Especially when I strike it low on the face, this hybrid still launches the ball in the air enough to move it down the fairway toward the target. It’s also forgiving right and left on mishits.
  • Feel: The Apex 19 has excellent feel upon strike—not too thin—and provides solid feedback to the player.
  • Launch angle: This hybrid’s launch is by far the best aspect of the club. As mentioned above, it allows the player to use it in all types of situations throughout the round, launching from several lies.

Issues I’ve encountered

  • Sound: The Apex 19 hybrid sound could be a little better in terms of player response. At times, it sounds a bit “dead”.
  • Workability: Workability is probably the lowest aspect of the Apex 19 hybrid, which is consistent with the Callaway Apex 19 iron set as well. It is meant to go straight and is not a pro club.
  • Adjustability: This hybrid is not adjustable at all, which is a slight con for me.

Best shot with this club

The best shot I had with the Apex 19 hybrid was an approach on a par 5, about 225 yards away, from just off the fairway on a flat lie. I put a very good swing on it, and it launched high and far. I got a little help from some wind and the ball landed softly on the green, rolled up to about 5 feet, then I made eagle!

Value for the money vs. other options

The Apex 19 is priced very similar to other hybrids made by major brands like Callaway. However, I find that Callaway often lowers its prices quicker than other brands when it launches a new product line. I usually search for non-stock shafts, which cost a little more, but the Apex 19 hybrid was still slightly less expensive than the TaylorMade SIM hybrid by about $30.

Final verdict

I have had the Callaway Apex Hybrid 2019 in my bag for three seasons now and I rely on it a lot, that is to say it has performed very well, and it’s versatile. I can pull it to use off the tee, especially on longer par 3 when I don’t feel confident with a longer iron. Also, it’s almost always my go-to club off the fairway for shots over 200 yards. It feels great in my hands and provides me with a good response, even on mishits.
